So for over a month now my oldest child who is 8 years old and usually loves school and refuses to stay home sick has been sent home nearly everyday for vomiting. We have taken him to several doctors... No one knows what is going on with him.... He recently told the doctor he poops blood now and then, so they did a fecal smear test ( if you have had one of these you know it's painful and no child would continue to be sick if they were faking after that)
He also told us his stomach " burns " a lot.. He says he tells his teacher and she tells him he is lying and to sit back down... We have an appointment tomorrow and he will be checked for ulcers ( I'm sure that's what it is) but I'm pissed because this stupid woman could t even be bothered to inform me that my child was making this complaint.... I am currently trying to get in touch with her to ask her myself if he is complaining of a burning sensation yet she won't return my phone calls or emails.... She could have written a note informing me of this. But no... She just tells him he is faking... Now my son hates going to school because his teacher calls him a liar, and refuses to call on him when he is trying to be a good student and raise his hand to answer a question.... I am ready to just home school him!!!

I agree on pushing fir the coeliac test, though if he's eating a lot of hot suace it Gould be ulcers.

I can't find any reference anywhere for fecal samples being taken like that. did you query it at the time?

Why would anyone submit a stool sample that isn't theirs?

I can understand why he might have ulcer if you letting him have hot sauce....it even causes adult to have ulcer if they have weak stomach lining.

Unimaginative- he is allowed to eat in between meals at home- they don't allow snack between breakfast and lunch at his school ( which with an ulcer you would get the burning pain on an empty stomach )
We don't brush it off and do nothing - we gave him antacids and make a note of it... But at home it is not as common of a complaint-

He does not vomit at home- yet I also don't feed him fatty foods such as fried chicken like the schools do. We eat healthy at home due to the fact that I am on a diet specific for my epilepsy so meals have to be as such indicated in my diet which is just healthy fresh foods without the grease----

Again I am in America -( I did not realize this was a uk forum at the time I downloaded the app) in America this is how they take that sample especially at a military hospital.
I've had to have that test done and I know it's painful like that.

He only vomits at school after he has eating.... I wanted to speak with the teacher to how often he is complaining so that I can tell the doctor. Because I have the times he complains at home written down but I'm not at the school to see if he is complaining to her and a 8 year old child may say " I complain every day " and it really be every other day.... I am just upset his teacher couldn't even be bothered to send a note saying " hey he is complaining of belly pain all the time"
I don't feel I am over reacting because if I was watching someone else's child I would inform them.... I feel like it's not her place to decide what is important and what is not- she can inform me and let me make that session.

I had a friend who consumed a lot of hot sauce as a joke. He vomited blood and had bloody stool. Too strong for 8 year old?

Go to the school then....
Crohns disease might be worth looking at too. I had it all through my childhood before it was diagnosed.

If he's been sent home every day then obviously his teacher is taking him seriously. And you yourself dismissed the burning feeling as just caused by a spicy meal. The teacher isn't a doctor or medical professional. Can't see you've got anything to complain about. If anyone's in the wrong it's you for not seeking medical advice sooner when a child is being sick every day.

"in America this is how they take that sample"

Not according to the Mayo Clinic website. If they try to do it again, refuse.

OP - look up Abdominal Migraines and Cyclical Vomiting Syndrome and see if that fits. My DS started with these at 8 and the original symptoms were the same. He had six weeks of nausea, vomiting, chronic tummy ache. Lost so much weight, I was so worried. There were peaks and troughs in it but that first 6-8 weeks was solid. Eventually he had an emergency referral to a pediatrician who eliminated lots of things (without any horrendous tests like what your poor boy has gone through). First off they had to get on top of the vomiting and weight before he could go on the proper meds, so spent about a month on anti-emetics. Then he was put on a medication called Pizotifen for about 9 months to 'kick them in to touch' - they got noticeably better very soon but we've never succeeded in getting rid of it altogether. He is now back on the Pizotifen and likely will stay that way, but we now just have the occasionally 'break through' episode of a day or two with cramps/nausea and occasional vomiting. Nothing like it was before. It's little known about though, so I think it gets missed a lot. It is more common in children with anxiety and ASD (my son has both), but I do know one child who has them who ticks the anxiety box but not the ASD. There might also be a family history of migraine. Hunger definitely plays a part - he's better if he eats little and often and avoids cheese.

I hope you get on top of it. I know how stressful these symptoms are to live with.

In the UK the school would make allowances for special dietry needs. Do they not do that in the US?

OP you are clearly under a lot of stress - very worrying that your ds is so sick Flowers. I mean this kindly, but rather than fixating on what a teacher should or shouldn't have told you, maybe concentrate your energies on looking after your ds and yourself. Yes, maybe she should have told you but would it really change what is happening now? Do you think your worry is making you angry and she's become the focus for that anger?

Rather than seeking to go back and apportion blame, maybe it would be better to meet with the Principle/school nurse and come up with a plan to support your ds at school? Maybe he could take a suitable lunch from home? Can your doctor not write a letter stating he has to be allowed a snack mid-morning?

Hope you have your answers soon.

Vivien- did you not read where I stated he has been to MULTIPLE doctors ? I have been seeking professionals during ALL of this every step of the way....

The teacher has no choice but to send him home when he vomits all over the place- it's the schools policy that they can not be in school for 24 hours if they vomit- but if he is complaining of burning she can dismiss it.

Just a thought, but has his gallbladder been checked?

Report
user1457028146 · 03/03/2016 19:27

Barbarianmum- as soon as we have a diagnosis they can write that note. But these teachers here in the US don't care to be honest like they should.... One our biggest issues here is the school systems- and again I need her to tell me how often this occurs.

Does he vomit at weekends, or only on school days?

So he has an ulcer?

user789653241 · 03/03/2016 19:28

wineoclockthanks, gall bladder only stores bile... unless he has stones, which is unlikely for 8 year olds. More like his liver needs to be checked.

Ouryve- like I've said he does not vomit at home. And even at school when he vomits he feels better right after... No fever or anything.

Did he have ultrasound?

Report
user1457028146 · 03/03/2016 19:32

Irvine- no they have not done a ultrasound. His pediatrician is going to order tests tomorrow- we had to have the ER force an appointment in because the pediatrician is booked months out ( part of it being a military hospital)

If he has blockage of bile duct or pancreas duct, he is likely to vomit after eating. But not just after fatty food. Also depends on severity of blockage.
