KC is the oldest child of a Monarch whose maternal feelings led her to try and provide sanctuary for a younger child who was riddled with revolting PR & appalling choices.
The result of that maternal urge is now a problem KC has to manage.
He might have more typical paternal instincts tempered via the experience of being the brother responsible for a problem sibling. There may be some resentment that the mutual parent failed to force Kid 2 to stand on his own, big & ugly enough feet, much much sooner than when the really stinky shit hit the fan.
KC has seen how “obvious solutions to the problem offspring” do not exist. Because people are who they are, and so are their wives. There are only trade-offs with a moving target of “associated complexities”. Those trade-offs lead to a life-time of having to manage all future slipperiness, tantrums and “cunning plans to get my own way”.
So would KC want to risk saddling the PoW with a similar headache to the one his own head has throbbed with ?
I’m sure as a father it is painful to watch your child struggle so hard to launch into the life he said he wanted. Especially as he unfortunately funded the launch by slagging off his family.
It’s tempting to immagine a perfect world, where everybody could be trusted to stick to agreed terms forever. So unpleasant tendencies could be tidily curbed with the sweetener of home & stipend. However that temptation will probably be countered by his personal frustrations with the realities of being saddled with his brother’s ugly mess of a life until his very last breath, cos the world is not perfect and not everybody is trustworthy.
IMO Harry is probably out for good. And he might not believe it when the realisation comes, but it really is in his own best interests.
All of us with tricky backgrounds and false starts into adulthood eventually have to look at how we have lived so far, where that has taken us, and embrace the autonomy of doing things very diffently.
Even when that involves letting go of helplessness flavoured expectations of others, and turning ourselves into the knight who will save us.
Certainly for the HAMlets’ sake, daddy letting go of the ghost of the boy he was and working towards being the better man he can be, is the way to go.
None of that comes from a mean spirited place. I had to let go of rescue expectations and the ghost of the girl I was. I know by the scarred over blisters on my own feet it is a hard, hot, long road. But the destination is worth the painful trek. Especially when you have children who really don’t need family burdens passed down to them.
