A crowd has turned out to see them. It’s currently being covered live on Sky News. Why on earth would anyone do this?

They aren’t working royals. They are just a pair of chancers who have scuttled back to Britain with their tails between their legs because they have died on their arses in the US. And now people are tugging their forelocks to them here.

People really are absolute fucking morons.

@NocturnalFox that is estimated to be $364,000 dollars. So a significant donation.

It will be interesting to see if the estimation is correct.

They should have sorted all this out when the whole “half in half out” chatter was happening surely?
"Half in, half out" is impossible. The Edinburghs already tried it back in the day. They were accused of a conflict of interest and of using their royal connections for personal gain. Whether that was the case or not, it does nothing to foster the transparency expected of the Crown.
And Harry, of course, must have been aware of this...

I am not personally offended if they use their status as a platform for good to boost charities or highlight issues if need, many celebrities do similar, or is it this that everyone is unhappy with?
Do you think they use their status selflessly? Just look at the meeting with Malala... lots of grandstanding, only to end up donating a single day’s tea sales.

And as for the follow-up argument that they attract interest to the cause... Malsla is finding that out.

As for the timing, it is clearly an attempt to interfere, via the media, with the activities of the royals. It is malicious and, naturally, annoying.
In the context of formal public appearances, the term "official" is understood to refer to someone who holds higher authority, or someone acting as a representative of some person or institution. That is not the case with H&M.
Personally, I don’t believe that only royals can visit charities—my school does, for instance (and we are private citizens...).
It is abundantly clear that they are trying to feign an identity that is not their own.

Do people really think like this? Interfere, malicious, annoying. They did a walk about, it’s really not a big deal.

Yes, absolutely. One would have to be naive not to think that the date was chosen maliciously.

🙄

They have donated to the charities they visited today.

Exactly. £50,000 donated by Harry to Epic supported apprenticeships which they visited today. They first visited as a couple in 2017.

They’re never going to be ‘private’ people though, are they? They’re public figures and members of the royal family.

They could be private, plenty of people manage it. You've got to start by not seeking publicity though, and not putting your life and your children on Instagram.

MadeInGrimsby · 15/10/2026 19:36

SilenceInside · 15/10/2026 18:50

The hand kissing is very odd! But apparently quite a well known bit of royal ritual albeit not normally done these days.

I can't think of the last time that would have happened.
Maybe Queen Victoria?.

And I thought it was great that the news actually featured information about the charities.

dulwich999 · 15/10/2026 19:58

What did they donate today?

Archewell’s coffers must have something in them?

There used to be, until recently, a 'kissing of hands' ritual between monarch and prime minister. It's been many, many years (Victoria's reign?) where a member of the public would have been expected, on meeting, to kiss the monarch's hand.
I imagine the King would have been quite taken aback and probably felt slightly uncomfortable with having his hand sucked kissed like that.

I can't imagine any current working royal expecting someone to kiss their hand!

It's just really, really weird. They're famous because he's the son of someone famous. It's like Brooklyn Beckham and his wife suddenly deciding to do public charity visits, with a staged walkabout outside first. If they want to support charities, great - so do loads of actual celebrities. But they don't tend to prance around outside first, or invite a load of cameras. I can't imagine why any charity would want this sort of circus, though I believe they received a very sizeable 'donation' to play along?

I do appreciate this did used to be Harry's job, but he left. I too once left a great job as I believed I'd be better off at a new company, and I too was wrong. But I just kicked myself, and moved on. I didn't go back to the old company, sit down at my old desk and carry on with the work I'd been doing before I left, hoping everyone would just shrug and think they must have imagined my departure - whilst management kept releasing increasingly loud statements declaring I very definitely did not work there! It's completely barking mad.

I kinda feel sorry for them, because they obviously miss it so much, the cheers and the crowds etc. being royal is very important to them, so the last 7 years obviously haven't provided what they needed or fulfilled them. It's like they want to turn the clock back.

dulwich999 · 15/10/2026 20:44

I wonder if they both could be described as nepo babies?

Technically I’m guessing that it would only really be Harry.

I think Meghan was likely responsible for soliciting all of her opportunities.

Harry seems to be lacking in that regard.

SilenceInside · 15/10/2026 20:46

There are aspects of his life he cannot actually quit though, it's not like an employed role. He has been performing the role since childhood. He remains a prince, the son of the current King, and is 5th in line to the throne, having been third in line for a fair while. It's very clear he's not a working royal and isn't representing the official royal family, under direction from the King. He is representing himself, as Prince Harry and the Duke of Sussex. Lots of people seem to be interested in him in that role alone.

Celebrities absolutely do perform when attending charity events, get photographed, meet people, shake hands, do press. Of course they do, there are so many examples of other types of celebrities that do this sort of thing.

I wonder how much of a leg up - if any - Mr Markle gave Meghan initially. He would surely have had some connections?

Or was she solely responsible for laying the foundations of her career?
