The royal family

PR and the Palace; are the mists clearing?

For those of us interested in the PR aspects of how the institution of the monarchy presents itself to us, the unsuspecting public, and given that Charles Spencer’s book has prompted a re-examination of events which took place over twenty-nine years ago, I thought this might be a good time to examine what Andrew Lownie calls;

“that gap between the curated narrative and the reality”.

We now know lots of things that weren’t obvious thirty years ago, for example;

We know that BP sometimes issues statements that question the credibility of the “accuser” rather than addressing an accusation directly.

We know that the relationship between the press and the palace is largely self serving on both sides.

We know that the royal rota tow the line in exchange for access.

We know that certain tabloids favour certain royals eg Fergie and The Sun.

We know that BP leaks and briefs certain stories to deflect from other more damaging ones.

We know that BP uses “safe” public figures to broadcast their spin for them eg it used to be Nicolas Soames but now appears to be Rory Stewart.

We know that many things presented to us in one way are in reality very different, eg the late Queen Elizabeth’s marriage, AMW being “banished” to Sandringham.

Given all of the above, do you think the Palace are losing the PR battle, simply because people are now much more switched on about ‘spin’ and because they favour a much more authentic approach?

Some clearly seem to be using the Royal ‘we’ eh? 😉

I love how some think they can speak for Great British public. And insinuating that ‘we’ as men and women are ‘ordinary’ too.

No-one speaks for me and nor should they be presumptuous enough to feel they can speak for anyone else.

And I’m not ordinary either.

Ruddy cheek.

For the second or third time, I was responding to a question!

To whom do you think the PR is aimed at, if not “we”?

Imagine no more…

Uncanny.

I don't think it's "set people off", I just think it's a bit baffling because of what we see of William and how he behaves.
Anyone else you could see this in? The Archbishop of Canterbury? John Craven?

Can you drop this? Is that at all possible do you think?
Others, not just me, have said on here that he comes across as angry sometimes.
As for throwing in other people, that made me laugh as it's silly but I'll ask again, maybe you just need to accept that others may have different opinions to you.

I never said that you couldn't have an opinion. You posted something on this thread that I find a bit inexplicable and I was only asking why you made that claim? What's your evidence for seeing this personality trait in William?
Or is it just an unsubstantiated rumour?

I think posters ( myself included ) are simply looking for you to provide some examples of this alleged disguised anger.

I cannot repeat all that I have said in previous posts about this, so I'm not answering again

I am not starting rumours nor am I in a court of law with a demand for evidence by a barrister😅
My opinion that's all, and saying any more will only prolong the pain with more questioning and demands to qualify my opinion
😊

Ok, it's fine. No, you're not in a court of law. It's just a chat thread. You made a bit of an odd claim about a public figure, we're just asking about it, that's all.
Perhaps step away from the thread if something is triggering you. 💙

A lot of people seem to be jumping on this William is incandescent with rage bandwagon. Perhaps you can link to the clips what you feel highlight this rage that is just below the surface but visible to you.

By your certainty there must be lots of these clips.Perhaps we’ll all agree with your assessment upon seeing your evidence

Or are you reading it so many times on certain pages it’s now your accepted truth and no supporting videos exist

Yes, I think that's the issue really. It appears on a lot of threads, but there's no evidence, so it seems a bit strange.

@Whentherainsetin101

What an interesting topic, thank you for starting this thread

I have had views about the Monarchy for many years and yes, I think they are losing the PR battle. I see far far more dissent amongst the public then ever before. It's not the Royal family versus Earl Spencer, it's the RF versus the great British public some of whom are demanding more for less £ from our royals and are questioning the use of the public purse

Support for them is falling because of a generational divide and it seems to me the Palace does not have a clue PR wise. It is all still run by the men in grey suits, courtiers of the old school and QE2's era. Occasionally they wheel in some hotshot PR person, they never seem to last because this is how it's always been done is ingrained in them all

The latest bulletproof PR crisis manager William employed has lasted since January now. Her description of herself as being "arm in arm with big names facing their toughest times” says it all really

What is this " far more dissent" that you talk of ? What form does it take ?

Lots of people come across as angry sometimes but with William it has become a trope -especially with a particular group.

You have repeated this (to me) urban myth and that’s why I asked you to explain why you have that opinion- because it mystifies me. Yet it’s trotted out on here too often to be mere coincidence - it must have its origins in something you have observed.

If you asked me to explain my opinion of someone in the public eye I could do it.

I understand that the British public are broadly in favour of the RF, and I appreciate that some of the charity work they spearhead is very valuable. Also their work with the forces. I also understand that the monarch holds a unique position when it comes to soft power eg King Charles’s speech to Congress.

The monarchy is less popular with young people though because presumably they respond better to institutions that are more democratic and accountable? Authenticity seems to be a buzzword, rather ironically, in PR circles nowadays!

And given how hard it is to make your way in the world atm as a young adult, and with the gap growing wider between the haves and the have-nots, the young perhaps don’t respond as well to huge displays of wealth and emphasis on status?

And don’t you think that the more we are able to “look behind the facade”, and appreciate what is spin and what is not, the more the cracks are beginning to show, and the less credible the monarchy appears to be?

Maintaining aloofness and mystique is harder in a more enquiring, less deferential world where everyone walks around with a camera and a sound recorder?

My own objection to the monarchy is that, with our unwritten constitution, it depends on what the historian Peter Hennessy has termed the “good chap” system, He applied it to government but I think it applies equally to monarchy.

In other words, the system depends on unwritten rules and that leaders being "good chaps" of both sexes. who understand the unspoken boundaries of power and choose not to cross them. And I think that without proper, solid scrutiny and openness, this makes us vulnerable.

We the public are forced to trust that those in power truly represent our best interests and that the RF serve us and not themselves.

Perhaps I am imbuing the royals with too much personal power when I say that, but given how far the AMW scandal has rumbled on with no one stepping in to stop it, when it should have been handled years ago, it has really given me serious pause for thought recently that the balance of power is not working as it should and that there aren’t sufficient checks and stops?

Stepping in to stop it? Just how is the king supposed to do that? He should not stop an investigation into Andrews action's that would be akin to popularity suicide

CoffeeCantata · 28/09/2026 16:15

OK let’s put my money where my mouth is!

I think the “William is violent and angry “ trope is an orchestrated campaign by 3 main groups: SS, anti-monarchists and influences from hostile powers wishing to destabilise the UK by, in this particular case, defaming the next HoS.

Tin hat territory? No, I don’t think so. It’s common know that China and Russia use disinformation campaigns like this to try to destabilise governments.

It’s irrelevant what side of the monarchy/anti argument you’re on - William will be the next HoS.

fuschiaproudparrot · 28/09/2026 16:20

simpsonthecat · 28/09/2026 09:23

I'm sorry, just to say I am not deliberately being provocative to you but I could not disagree more. The Andrew storm is not weathered, he is under police investigation and it is never ever going to go away.
The Harry and Charles Spencer books does not mean that everyone is on board with the royals about this. There are grumblings, mutterings and some believing a lot that is written. Why do you call it 'targeted attacks', two people close to the royals have written books, that's all. We only know a fraction of what goes on and it is good to lift the lid on some of it. When you say 2/3 want a monarchy, I have to say I do not always believe tiny section positive polls, but even so, what about a third of the country being anti? Everything I have looked at it's a bit more 50/50

The positive stories are sometimes ridiculous and desperate and are often mocked.

Where are the grumblings and mutterings ? Genuinely asking where you see these ? Do you mean stories in the press or more?

CoffeeCantata · 28/09/2026 16:21

@Whentherainsetin101

I don’t see any evidence that “people respond better to institutions which seem more democratic and accountable” (quoting your post). Our system is democratic and accountable - in what way is it not? We have political parties, they publish manifestos, we have elections, we vote and there has to be a GE at least every 5 years. Parliament is sovereign. Tell me how that’s not democratic?

The HoS being a monarch doesn’t translate to our constitution being undemocratic etc.
