The royal family

PR and the Palace; are the mists clearing?

For those of us interested in the PR aspects of how the institution of the monarchy presents itself to us, the unsuspecting public, and given that Charles Spencer’s book has prompted a re-examination of events which took place over twenty-nine years ago, I thought this might be a good time to examine what Andrew Lownie calls;

“that gap between the curated narrative and the reality”.

We now know lots of things that weren’t obvious thirty years ago, for example;

We know that BP sometimes issues statements that question the credibility of the “accuser” rather than addressing an accusation directly.

We know that the relationship between the press and the palace is largely self serving on both sides.

We know that the royal rota tow the line in exchange for access.

We know that certain tabloids favour certain royals eg Fergie and The Sun.

We know that BP leaks and briefs certain stories to deflect from other more damaging ones.

We know that BP uses “safe” public figures to broadcast their spin for them eg it used to be Nicolas Soames but now appears to be Rory Stewart.

We know that many things presented to us in one way are in reality very different, eg the late Queen Elizabeth’s marriage, AMW being “banished” to Sandringham.

Given all of the above, do you think the Palace are losing the PR battle, simply because people are now much more switched on about ‘spin’ and because they favour a much more authentic approach?

Have you never met anyone with disguised anger? Have you not heard of the term before?

Sounds like psychobabble jargon to me.

Of course people disguise their anger all the time. How would society function if we didn’t?

Oh I just haven’t seen any examples of William displaying the common signs and thought you might have some you could share. Obvs fair enough for anyone to diagnose what they call disguised anger tho, and no obligation to back it up with evidence.

Why can't I have this opinion without you wanting specific instances you can pull apart

Maybe William should make our lives miserable by posting on Instagram whenever he butters toast, drinks tea, etc. at an outing. Today Prince William welcomed a new giraffe and ate a raisin scone.

I am just surprised you know William well enough to deduce he has disguised anger .

You can be as dismissive as you like. Calling it psychobabble jargon. 😅😂😂😂

The William haters are the most bizarre lot - how they’ve managed to find anything to even mildly dislike him for is incredible, never mind the full-blown nastiness they display. There was one on another thread who just wouldn’t have it that William had ever been close to his sainted mother.

I really feel for the guy. He’s been put through the wringer so badly in the past few years and has just quietly got on with the job. I genuinely have no idea why people are so cruel about him.

I’ve sat through enough training courses in my time where I had to listen to people spouting this stuff. It’s a massive industry.

Go on then - tell me how “Disguised Anger” with capital letters differs from people just disguising their anger, something most of us do every day.🙄

Nice to have a bit of evidence or it looks like prejudice and malice though.

Fine - that’s your choice - but admit it us just that.

You say that but is it really?

Have you ever wondered why the institution are do secretive and their press requires so much “handling”?

Why does their PR have to be managed so tightly?

Why do they not encourage more outside scrutiny of finances for example?

Why do they need to bring in so many PR operatives?

Why do the palace brief and leak instead of offering straightforward responses?

How about opting for authenticity and credibility?

I’ve always been generally supportive of the RF, but more recently I’ve had more cause to wonder about their real worth. They’re obviously a draw for both foreign tourist and the British fans, generating spend wherever they go. They’re obviously supposedly bolster morale, and I’m sure they might still do, but the whole ‘firm’ don’t deliver like QE2 used to do.
It’s finances at the core of my issue. Admittedly I’m pig sick of the whole wealthy few/many hard-up thing, but it seems increasingly wrong that they’re sat on massive fortunes as well as earning more through the Duchy’s each year. I know they pay tax, but that’s likely minimised through clever accounting. Why don’t they use the profits made for endowing say medical research or social housing or anything of benefit to the great unwashed.

I don't know William
I mentioned a perception earlier. Are people not allowed to have a perception.
It is my opinion. It may differ to yours. That is allowed

I was not patronising.

You said 'if it is disguised, how do you know?' .

I politely answered, 'have you not heard of that term before?' despite finding it a daft question
How it is patronising to ask you that, I do not know

No point in going any further with this with you

BemusedAmerican · 28/09/2026 13:15

I'm stuck in a stalled train feeling a lot of disguised anger. I suspect that everyone in this train feels similarly.

He seems to disguise it very well. He's always looks so cheerful and positive on engagements.

Who is 'We'? Who are you speaking for?

Some clearly seem to be using the Royal ‘we’ eh? 😉

I love how some think they can speak for Great British public. And insinuating that ‘we’ as men and women are ‘ordinary’ too.

No-one speaks for me and nor should they be presumptuous enough to feel they can speak for anyone else.

And I’m not ordinary either.

Ruddy cheek.

I agree.

Unlike his sibling who looks anything but cheery and positive these days.

Still, I suppose it is different now that he doesn’t have the Palace PR to buff him up a bit.

I know, why do you think it's the case? Saying he's got all this anger, with absolutely no substantiation? Weird.

Given that the Palace very publicly reminded the Sussexes that they are not working royals with their letter via the Lord Chamberlain, I’m not sure why you think Harry is being rehabilitated?

If you read what I wrote, I did not state that the image rehabilitation is working towards Harry to becoming a working royal.

If you read the news, you will see it is obvious that his image is being rehabilitated.

However, I do believe that Harry will become a working royal again.

Well I’m not sure the rehabilitation is working, largely due to Harry self sabotaging
I don’t see why he would become a working Royal again either. What is he needed for?

Spaniels4Eva · 28/09/2026 14:12

I think William does very well tolerating the media. After everything that happened to his mother, and the horror that Catherine was put through before her cancer diagnosis, it's little wonder that he has some level of repressed anger over the public intrusion into his life/that of his family. Can you blame him? He does however understand duty, thanks to the massive part that the late Queen played in his life.

I can't see a future where Harry can be trusted enough to represent his family and/or the Head of State.

Impossible. It won’t just be up to the RF (and I can’t see KWV countenancing it). It. Will be a matter for the PM, MI5 etc. Royals have to meet foreign HoS and diplomats, plus home politicians and the secret services. Absolute discretion is vital and H has shown the world he’ll blab for dollars.

He’s blown himself out of the water.

I'm stuck in a stalled train feeling a lot of disguised anger. I suspect that everyone in this train feels similarly.

I spent 45 mins on a call to British Gas over a billing mistake (theirs). Despite the Kafka-esque nightmare it was, I too disguised my anger because I know it’s not the fault of the people in the call centres in India and Scotland.
