I recall having a conversation with my son in law a Dr. He told me that burning to death is a very quick death. That it’s intense suffering for a moment or so then it’s over.

I so, so want to believe that Twerking but…I don’t want to dump trauma on you too..but I remember hearing Simon Weston, a survivor of the attack on (was it ) HMS Sheffield? during the Falklands War. He just got out but he is still haunted by the screams of his burning comrades - mostly young lads. I really hope it was over quickly for them.

And I love history but I’ve never been under any illusions that the past was a terrifying place.

heatdome · 23/09/2026 17:31

In an impassioned speech - which was cut short after seven minutes due to technical problems

Or because the audience couldn’t take any more. Who can say?

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 23/09/2026 17:36

What exactly are his qualifications for talking about AI - apart of course liking the sound of his own voice and the desire to inflict his opinions on everyone?

There are witness testimonies of the Tudie-era burnings he should read, then.

Why is Harry trotting along the streets of NYC?
Wouldn't professional security arrange to drop him by car near to the venue and avoid a pavement trek?

I thought the same myself, @Lunde, but suppose this gave an opportunity for a few more clicks or even snatched photos if anyone had known or cared who he is

The cynic is me thinks he was hoping to be harassed to strengthen his case however they have been back for 4 weeks and I think if there was evidence of a genuine threat , Met security would be in place by now.

If they get security will the security accompany them when they’re abroad? Or is it only IPP who get it abroad? Because I was thinking if they get it Meghan would have to stay here, otherwise HAM will have to pay for her security when she goes back to the US.

British police have no jurisdiction and cannot carry arms outside the country.

So even when the Sussexes were working royals, their protection outside of Britain involved liaising with the local police, such as the RCMP when they were in Canada. That all ended when they found freedom. So even if RAVEC do decide to provide the Sussexes with some form of protection, they're on their own as soon as they leave the country. But given that they've managed fine for years without police protection, I don't think that will be a problem.

It wasn't meant to be a quick death. It was meant to be as painful as possible as a deterrent and a lesson.

Strangely I had article about this pop upon my Facebook feed and there is no simple answer, it could be quick or slow. It depends on the type of wood used and the executioners could delay the death by burning slowly. It was one of those articles that was very interesting but horrifying at the same time. Also the gunpowder that was given to speed death up, didn’t always work and left people with horrific injuries while burning.

Yes, it wasn't a brief moment of pain and then instant death, as someone earlier quoted her Dr relative as asserting.

This has to be the weirdest derail ever.

I find I have no interest at all in Harry's "thoughts" on AI. Call me cynical but I doubt he has anything useful or insightful to add to the debate but would wager he included an anecdote about himself, his wife or his children.

He can operate an Xbox if that counts as professional experience!

Serenster · 23/09/2026 18:03

Meghan, Marcus the Soho house man, and Kelly Zafjen, who posted on instagram that she visiting the UK. It looks like they are playing mah jongg? (or scrabble, with really big tiles?). Meghan’s glass of wine is large compared to the others! And her famed tablescaping appears to not be in evidence.

I've seen this before with Meghan - perhaps in 2023?

She is leaving a restaurant with a friend (the friend is in a bright blue top that made it memorable). In fact I'm unsure whether blue top is really a friend or another bodyguard. There is a female bodyguard in a baseball cap walking several metres in front. And there is a Backgrid pap on the road side of the pavement.

Instead of picking her up at the restaurant entrance the (male driver) is waiting 50m or so up the road, forcing her to walk along the pavement and the bodyguard/s don't stand physically close. Meghan walks along smiling and waving and at one point appears to gesture to blue top to step back so the pap gets a clear photo of her.

It all appeared to be a prearranged pap-stroll.

From a historical book that I read it depends which way the wind is blowing.

My relative had a excessively painful experience unfortunately!

Yes, he paid for what he did in an awful way, but bringing it vaguely back to the topic of the thread, I used to think of his part in history as bold and impressive - like the Spencers. But after all it was just a bit of grubby power grabbing at the expense of a young girl. Like the Spencers.

If they harbour delusions that they're more important than the royals because of history then they're stuck at the mental maturity of a ten year old.

Was that Thomas Cranmer? I've always wondered what happened to his wife and children.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 23/09/2026 18:10

Good lord. What is going on with that man's socks? He looks like Paul Hollywood's dad. For some reason I always thought Markus would be groomed and stylish, but it seems he also dresses to look like a pig's breakfast. No wonder he's friends with Meghan.

IcedPurple · 23/09/2026 18:11

Close! They're on the same plinth at the Martyrs Memorial.
