we did speculate that perhaps the Spencers are somewhat resentful that Diana's marriage to Charles didn't put the Spencers on a footing with the monarchy in the way they expected.

Historically this was why it generally wasn't a good idea to marry one of your own subjects, especially if she had lots of relatives - Woodvilles, Boleyns, Seymours.

Although it didn't any of those families much good, did it? Boleyns faded into obscurity, Seymours and male Woodvilles ended up on the block and Elizabeth Woodville shoved into a convent.

No wonder the monarchy waited until the early 20c before trying that again.

Totally off topic, sorry but I feel jokes are wasted on some of the other threads.
I had no idea Piers Morgan had a son called Spencer Morgan, can’t say I keep up with the children of celebs etc. Anyway he does and he’s cracked the joke of the week on X. (Further down the thread he suggests his name has something to do with Diana…🤷‍♀️🤔)

That is very funny! 🤣

According to Neil Sean ( 🤔🤷‍♀️) his books are usually published by another house , but this one is penguin ! , and further gossip …he states that a source there ( penguin) has mentioned that Spencer read all Harry’s drafts of spare before they were published……could be crap …..could be true….

What's coming to light are more of the inaccuracies. A number of things which are easy to contradict (the late Queen didn't speak from the balcony, for example) and other details contradicted by Diana's own book and words to Andrew Morton and others.
Spencer keeps referring to his "eulogy" which he seems still to be touting.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 23/09/2026 09:41

Is that her speech after Diana died? That is a shocking error to make. It's obvious that she's speaking in a room at the palace, you can hear the crowds outside.

I’m trying to keep an open mind….however if I’m honest i wasn’t particularly a Diana fan ( thought she was manipulative) …..but I have always disliked Spencer….awful man who due to the sexism of the aristocracy gained everything yet still wanted to use his sister’s status to gain more …and that is before we get into his disgusting treatment of women….🤷‍♀️

Yes, that's right

He's keen to keep alive the fact his eulogy was recognised as "one of the most powerful and influential speeches of the 20th century."

All valid points. It's fine for him to write a memoir about his sister. However, it's less fine to attack other people in the process, especially with the level of inaccuracies that are emerging.
I would question his motives.

It's interesting that you say that, because I did find a couple of inaccuracies in the CW book, which I put down to the use of source material (he's not particularly strong on that).

This is what worries me about his writing when he’s using source material to which only he seems to have access (the ‘Spencer archives/papers’) and it can’t be checked by others.

But I won’t derail!

PleasantGreenPorcupine · 23/09/2026 09:47

On the Laura K interview, and also Lorraine, he frequently refers to his "eulogy". I lost count with the LK one.

Fair point.

Martin Luther King, JFK and Winston Churchill would like a word.....

MrsGusset · 23/09/2026 09:53

When Charles Spencer chose to associate himself with the Sussexes it was only a matter of time before he got markled.

The only surprise is how swiftly & soundly this has happened,

Yes, he's certainly got an inflated view of his own importance.

TonyDancer · 23/09/2026 09:57

I haven’t RTFT so apologies but doesn’t it seem slightly “odd” that H and M returned to the UK at the same time this book was being published? Is there more to it all?

WSC is a distant relation of CS, who probably thinks that the eloquence is a family trait he's inherited.

He conveniently forgets to mention that it was just hot air.

There was no follow through with his promises to look after H & W and he quietly admitted much later that there was no need because they were well looked after by the RF.

Plus he is hardly showing any care for W now, or even for H if you consider encouraging division between brothers and the damage that does to both.

The archbishop of canterbury was shocked at CS vengeful speech and wanted the dean of westminster who was officiating to not allow it as completely out of place in a church service.

(Not to mention the irony of CS lecturing the RF in the light of own family record and estranged children!)

I think HAM are only back in the UK as they have ran out of road. UK is their last hope for any sort of "public figure role" yes I know they are not public figures but HAM will never accept that

the resentment at not being top dog

A friend and I were having this discussion last night. A Spencer ancestor of the current earl was a minister under Charles II and James II, and was instrumental in helping William of Orange to the throne and thus the establishment of a Protestant monarchy after 1688. IIRC Diana once said to Charles that if it wasn't for her family his wouldn't be on the throne, and we did speculate that perhaps the Spencers are somewhat resentful that Diana's marriage to Charles didn't put the Spencers on a footing with the monarchy in the way they expected.

Oh gawd, did Spencer expect to be handed his own Dukedom through the placement of his sister as Princess of Wales? Or place in the Privy Council? To be made a Knight of the Garter? But he received no royal honours at all. Oooh.

Probably at the root of his resentment. Plus, he could have been the bil of the reigning monarch and he's not.

MrsLeonFarrell · 23/09/2026 10:04

Why were there 6 cameras in a classroom? I don't get the impression when the working royals visits schools they have more than 1 still and 1 video camera present. I coughs be wrong but 6 is more like filming a drama than making a visit.

Re the book. If you are writing something you know us going to cause contraversy, surely it's common sense to make sure your facts are correct?

I've been in schools when we've had various politicians and dignitaries. There has only ever been one camera present, ime.

Who the heck knows what he thought or imagined? but 'I'll be the uncle to the monarch after Charles' is a bit of a head turner, and as a 'historian' (inverted commas deliberate) he'd know about the power royal uncles have exercised over the centuries (usually disastrously for the uncles, it has to be said).
