A new thread and book not even published till Tuesday. I checked on Amazon and its only 12th on the non fiction bestseller list. Doesn't show Earl Spencer in a very good light imho.

I can think of a lot of parasites I'd boot out before the RF.

Incidentally, a parasite is an organism that lives on the host. Given that the Treasury keeps a large percentage of the money from the Crown estates, wouldn't that make the Treasury and government parasitic on the monarchy rather than the other way around?

CoffeeCantata · 23/09/2026 14:13

I have a question for UKisgaslit.

What sort of HoS are you proposing?

Please humour me and explain exactly how things would be better.

And not just vague things - what would we all notice was better in our everyday lives?

myrtleWilson · 23/09/2026 14:25

What on earth would @Ukisgaslit do with their time if there was no monarchy.....?

I've just thought of a great name for those posters.

Temu Trots.

I doubt they have an idea for a HoS apart from 'not this one', or how the political landscape would change and what we'd have in the monarchy's place. Or the fact that the monarchy is so entwined in public and political life that it would take years to disentangle and you'd be left with a gaping vacuum of expertise and (sorry) soft power that would be unfillable.

And when you look at the choices for a president....no thanks.

I am genuinely interested in a reply from gaslit because they remind me of similarly negative people I’ve met who rage against things but can’t necessarily make constructive and practical suggestions.

i suspect ( but I hope not) that they will just say “we’ll be free of those parasites “ and govt funds will increase.

Er, well, thousands of people are employed by the parasites, many of them very specialised, who wouldn’t find work elsewhere (craftspeople etc). And what does gaslit propose to compensate me with for my annual fiver - if we lose Trooping the Colour, coronations, garden parties and other spectacles? What can I have for my fiver? A cup of fancy coffee? Hmmm… I’ll take the pageants.

I agree, and we are probably witnessing a terminal decline in Great Britain, which may well lose its “Great” in the near future along with three of its constituent nations. We will therefore have to do more with less, while a population that is becoming increasingly restless and angry may be less inclined to pay for an extravagant Royal Family that doesn't appear to be doing its part.

Playing at homelessness, or attaching themselves to whatever fashionable social-media cause happens to be trending, isn't going to cut the cloth, I'm afraid. So my second unsolicited piece of advice to the British Royal Family today is: adapt or die and stop being so greedy and grasping.

We see you, even if the commemorative-plate-and-coronation-mug crowd are happy to keep cheering you from the sidelines with their cheap pound shop Chinese plastic flags. And nostalgia isn't going to save them either: the past was rarely as good as the memory of it serves, and trying to recreate some idealised version of Britain that never really existed won't address the problems of the Britain that exists today.

Here endeth the second lesson !

Great Britain is a geographical name. For an island.

Imdunfer · 23/09/2026 14:41

Ukisgaslit · 23/09/2026 09:43

I mention Charles because we are constantly told by Windsor fans that he has ‘influence’ and ‘soft power’ . I’d imagine the Commonwealth would be the show case for that …

The most recent example of that was his invite to and return visit to Trump, which was probably at least partially responsible for us being slapped with lower tariffs than the EU.

CoffeeCantata · 23/09/2026 14:51

Abra1t · 23/09/2026 14:37

Yes. Great refers to size - as in The Great War.

i may be wrong but I thought Britain was the big island most of us live on, Great Britain includes all the other islands (except for Ireland), and the UK includes N. Ireland. “The British Isles” means the lot - including the whole island of Ireland.

Happy to be corrected.

Without going into how it's called Britain in the first place, wiki suggests that in the 12c it was called Britannia major to distinguish it from Brittany (Britannia minor) which had been settled by Celtic immigrants from Britain. It cites the pseudohistory of Geoffrey of Monmouth c 1136 for this.

And I have to say, 'pseudohistory' is a great term. Not that I'm suggesting any sort of current application of it, you understand.

And many countries, often cited on here as veritable earthly paradises, retain theirs.

There’s no direct correlation between monarchies/republics and happiness/misery. Our system works.

No .
Firstly no one said they are paradise - that is just wasting people’s time .

Secondly the reason the Nordic countries score so highly on the index of democratic countries has nothing to do with their cycling monarchies . They are a side show .

It’s because their voting systems may allow for PR and for more frequent plebiscites and offer more regionalised forums .
It’s the countries with more devolved democracies which score highly - regardless of having or not having a monarchy .

@foxylady2
It wasn’t just that William wouldn’t dare try it -
the entire Welsh investiture was invented on the spot for Charles !
Made up .

So much for ‘ancient’ traditions . A load of baloney . All those Disneyesque costumes gaudy gold coach - a couple of hundred years old if that .
Bread and circuses for when the population was getting ideas from the French .
The latest version is sub- influencer reels on insta - big mistake .

Wrong. Edward VIII had an investiture. Must do better, try again.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 23/09/2026 16:59

I'm still none the wiser as to what this means. I assume it's deeply obscure reference to the events in France after 1789 but who knows?

Janiie · 23/09/2026 17:06

Didn't anyone see the weasel Spencer on Lorraine though? I know it isn't my usual go to viewing either but I heard he was on it so thought I'd see if she challenged him but nope. Was Kuenssberg all over again, but worse. Oh the Morgan thing was just a little irrelevant mistake quick quick move on. Let's discuss how the boys shouldn't have walked behind the coffin, as if that's a newsflash.

wordler · 23/09/2026 17:09

I didn’t watch the Kussenberg interview but just saw that still image on the Private Eye cover - did she sit in that weird position for the whole interview -looked like she was barely on the chair.

And because their populations are tiny compared to the UK with similar land area. Also much more culturally homogeneous than the UK.

The population of Sweden is about 9% of ours. Makes life a lot simpler.

I suspect anyone only ever goes on Lorraine safe in the knowledge that they will be told that they "look great" and will receive the furthest thing from a grilling possible.

Personally I think that anyone flogging this kind of book should have to face the full force of Emily Maitlis.

Charles III is also the monarch of Australia and New Zealand, both of which have moved away from “first past the post” electoral systems to proportional representation in various forms. So it’s not the monarchy that prevents that - in fact, they work well together.

True. Lorraine just bigs herself up as a seasoned pro you'd think she'd have said something to challenge him for example 'do you think this is all guilt, do you think you should have therapy rather than writing incorrect tittle tattle?' But nope, was indeed a puff piece with a bit of och aye the noo attempt at charm thrown in.

But that’s the problem: many people who are anti-monarchy seem to think KC is Louis XIV.

I bet Chas wishes he was sometimes. When a man shouted abuse at Louis he had the bloke's tongue cut out. That'd settle Spencer's hash.

The ignorance about the limitations and powers of constitutional monarchy on this site is woeful.

I didn’t think Emily Mailiss gave Andrew a particularly good grilling, if that’s what you’re referring to?
I remember watching it and saying to the tv ‘ask him … ‘ etc.
Haven’t watched the LK interview and will he’s cold day in hell before I watch Lorraine

I’ve been over that .
Try again .

Both investitures were done to impose a Prince of wales on a restive population

Charles’ however was completely revamped by Snowdon .
Made up .
