A new thread and book not even published till Tuesday. I checked on Amazon and its only 12th on the non fiction bestseller list. Doesn't show Earl Spencer in a very good light imho.

Not the most gracious apology ever ...

Is that it??
is it going to be removed from the book?
because that to me is a pointless apology designed ( he hopes ) to save him the money he would lose if Morgan sued him! 😡

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 22/09/2026 15:46

Historian 'assumes'.

Spencer, historians check. And double check if they're referencing people still alive and prone to suing.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 22/09/2026 15:48

I would assume reprints would have to be corrected but not sure if a court would order a recall of books currently in shops. Maybe CS could print a little insert of his apology and trot round to each bookshop and slip one into each book?

IAmATorturedPoet · 22/09/2026 15:51

That reads more like a justification of his assumption, with an apology tagged on the end. Not sure that’s going to cut the mustard with PM.

Probably not ...

Oh, look at that! 😁
Piers Morgan’s no fool, I’m not surprised he isn’t accepting that ‘sorry, not sorry’ statement.

Noodledog · 22/09/2026 16:24

Does anyone know how much it will cost Penguin if all the current copies have to be destroyed and new ones printed, with the false allegations about Piers Morgan removed?

Noodledog · 22/09/2026 16:29

Just to add, I'm really surprised that neither CS nor Penguin seem to have checked something so easily disprovable. It would have taken them a few minutes to do.

The great self declared eye witness to history 'assumes'. He needs to rename it 'assumptions of a shit stirrer'.

What a humongous prat. Imagine not checking and rechecking facts.

He can check with Andrew Lownie - I think it was 60,000 books had to be removed from his first edition.

The courts can order booksellers to stop selling the book as well as ordering the publisher and author to stop selling, distributing or promoting the book. The publisher will almost certainly have relied on Spencer signing a statement that his book was true, so may be able to recover their costs from him if that happens.

Spencer and his publisher knew they could say pretty much whatever they wanted about Charles as he would never sue for libel. I suspect they didn't factor Piers Morgan getting upset into their thinking.

Janiie · 22/09/2026 16:42

'I suspect they didn't factor Piers Morgan getting upset into their thinking'

I'm no fan of PM but surely they know where his allegiances lie and he'd be looking for any error to trip Spencer up.

They've handed it to him on a plate.

JustAnotherWhinger · 22/09/2026 16:55

I think they’ve been stupidly complacent.

I doubt they wasted much time fact checking anything about the royals as they know a statement would be the worst that happens.

And in many ways a public reaction from the palace would just increase publicity.

Missing the fact he’d mentioned someone as litigious as Piers Morgan and not fact checking that very very closely is madness.

IAmATorturedPoet · 21/09/2026 23:42

Quite, Myrtle.
It was hosted by Ewan Venters, head of Fortnum & Mason (but that’s just one of those pesky facts!).

Ah....so was it he who supplied the F+M bags to the Qatari Prince to transport the wads of cash to Charles I wonder? Hmmm, oh what a tangled web we weave....

Penguin also published The Salt Path without fact checking it. They rely on the author signing a warranty that what they have written is true. I'm not surprised they didn't pick up the obvious factual errors in this book. However, such obvious errors undermine Spencer's credibility.

It is delicious, isn't it.

Spencer must be furious with himself, Cat must be biting her tongue.

And of all the people to be wrong about - Piers Morgan.

It is hilarious. Morgan of all people.

The great historian Spencer has egg all over his face. There's no coming back from this surely.

I think the more important thing is that CS managed to block Piers Morgan from attending Diana’s funeral, as he was the editor of the Mirror at the time and as such the current representative of that tabloid, even though he wasn’t working for them
when those horrendous photos in the gym emerged, it still would have been inappropriate for him to attend.

passpartot · 22/09/2026 18:42

Piers will get a knighthood now.

Well, this episode has just brought that story (which he didn't need to include in his book) to the attention of a new generation, who will no doubt be searching for the images on the internet.

No, the important and relevant thing is Spencer has dropped clangers in his 'historical' book which means he has zero credibility and every other allegation should be taken with a pinch of salt.

Who attended Diana's funeral nearly 30yrs ago is absolutely irrelevant.
