Royal row between King Charles and Earl Spencer

Buckingham Palace said they don't usually comment but they can't stay silent. Apparently Prince Charles said at the time of Diana's death rest assured we'll forget her soon enough. Which is pretty horrendous. Charles has more or less said grief had clouded Earl Spencer's judgement and memory.

I don't know why he has waited nearly 30 years to come out with this.

Didn't Earl Spencer refuse to help Diana when she split from Prince Charles.
Then at her funeral was saying the royal family let her down.
Oh well he must be skint to write a book that will upset his Nephews.
Saying that what can he write that hadn't been written before.🤷‍♀️

He refused to let her have a specific house on the estate, the police didn’t want her to have that one either. She refused the alternatives he offered.

And shouts at and treats his gardeners so badly that 11 out of 12 quit in one year.

I read about that 😮

OneLilacHedgehog · 17/09/2026 15:42

How many times?
He refused a specific house because it was practically right next to a public road. His security said there was no way to guarantee her safety there. So yes he offered other houses on the estate.

Owl55 · 17/09/2026 15:43

Recollections may vary Charles?

Yes. Charles obviously has a temper. Also so many stories abou5 how Camilla is the only one who can calm him down.
He does not sound a nice man.

My2cents1975 · 17/09/2026 15:44

IMHO, it is easier for Charles Spencer to lash out at his former brother-in-law than to introspect on his own shortcomings.

The sliding doors moment for Diana will always be Charles Spencer introducing Martin Bashir to Diana.

Diana was always going to share her side of things. A better human being than Bashir would have gotten the story without poisoning Diana against her RPOs, leading to the fateful decision to drop her RPOs and entrust her safety to the inferior security provided by Dodi's father.

Metalmotha · 17/09/2026 15:44

earl Spencer gives me the creeps, expect more of this stuff to come out from him working with H&M amazing how it’s come out now. They want to destroy the royal family

OneLilacHedgehog · 17/09/2026 15:45

@Metalmotha maybe everyone would be happier if the royal family as an institution no longer existed, and they were just a rich family who could get on with their lives?

They had been seperated 4 almost 5 years when she died. He was a single man and could sleep with anyone he wanted (with consent off course)

In the marriage I think it is well known from their own interviews that they both cheated.

Having lived through this …. Reports at the time indicated he cheated years before the cheating claims and some newspapers reported at the time of the Wedding that he spent night before with Camilla on the Royal Train - if my memory serves me well that is.
The RF badly judged the time around Diana’s death - the Queen (and Charles POW) was very, very unpopular for a short time.
Tony Blair claims credit for steering the RF in line with public thinking during that time.
Charles S was applauded for his eulogy - in the streets AND inside the Abbey. Quite astounding at the time.

Owl55 · 17/09/2026 15:46

Charles Spencer’s fury at the funeral is explained if KC said this!

The way Martin Bashir behaved in manipulating and lying to Diana was appalling. And he continued to work for the BBC until 2021! He definitely fuelled her paranoia, and it was cynical and deliberate.

Sorry, but people repeatedly bringing up a tetchy couple of seconds over a pen as a sign of Charles' temper 😁

Those tetchy couple of seconds do show a lot though.

The exposure and display of the monarch is always a carefully orchestrated and tightly controlled event. They usually present a benign figure, humble and sweet, slightly confused by the interest in their person, and grateful to those around them. They present a person who is interested in the less fortunate, and one who has so much they have no need for corruption.

However, the uncontrolled moments, like the pen and the the ITN footage, you witness something else entirely. There is nothing but contempt in the ITN footage; not only but he is encouraging and educating his sons along the same path.

I am not sure why we believe or expect humility and grace from anyone who is raised, from birth, to believe that they have birthrights that came from God. As children, every adult around them bend the knee in their presence. Every requirement, demand, or need is met by people who revere them.

It could not possibly go wrong, could it?

Nanalisa60 · 17/09/2026 15:48

I’m no lover of sausage fingers , but I really don’t think he said that, she was the mother of his children (one never forgets your mother) and let’s face it she was one of a kind . Not the kind of woman anyone would ever forget.

MincePieAny1 · 17/09/2026 15:48

I don't believe it for one minute. The Spencers have always been a law unto themselves with some very troubled souls. I would go so far as to say there's something not very arostocratic about the family, raised from sheep farmers a few centuries ago.

Yes the journalists at the time reported they saw a female figure slip into Charles train carriage the night before his wedding. They assumed it was Diana, which no one cared about. The palace issued a furious denial.

Everyone forgot about this until Charles cheating with Camilla came out and with it the revelation it was Camilla who slipped into Charles train carriage the night before his wedding to Diana.

Lol this comment makes me laugh.
What!! They come from sheep farmers???? How utterly dreadful.

I agree about Charles cheating on Diana, however I also remember Diana having affairs with married men, and treating their wives in a very unpleasant way. Neither of their behaviour was edifying and they both caused a lot of hurt and damage to other people.

"Train carriage the night before his wedding?"

Why would he be sleeping in a train the night before the wedding?

Don’t you think it’s strange though that whenever challenged about anything the RF are never wrong, they’ve never made a mistake, they never admit to errors, they are immune to any criticism. And that’s aside from allegedly covering up for the activities of AMW for over a decade. It’s always everyone else who is wrong. This narrative is starting to wear a bit thin I must say. I used to be a monarchist but I no longer trust what they say.

Not sure what you're on about, considering the royal family rarely - pretty much never, aside from today - answer back on anything.

What exactly is it that you no longer trust in what the royal family have said?

I don't know. But he did. With the press camped outside.

BunnyBunbunbun · 17/09/2026 15:55

Ukisgaslit · 17/09/2026 15:30

@BunnyBunbunbun

Have you actually read the statement ?

Because that statement does not include any denial that Charles said it .
If he really was innocent of the statement Charles could ignore it or clearly state that it was not true .
That was not what he did . He issued the usual snide waffle trying to imply that the Spencer was ‘confused’

I believe Charles Spencer . And if I had any doubt the rushed out smear attempt from the Windsors confirmed it for me .

"I didn't say that, he's lying!" is not a particularly intelligent statement and simply turns things into a brawl. More effective to say "his judgement is clouded".

You're reaching quite a bit if you're trying to claim that the statement isn't a denial. Charles Spencer's allegation is also quite implausible.

He sounds like a product of his parents & upbringing.

OneLilacHedgehog · 17/09/2026 15:57

@BunnyBunbunbun so you think that passive aggressive nasty snidy statement is better than simply saying, what earl Spencer says is not true. Etc

wordler · 17/09/2026 15:58

OneLilacHedgehog · 17/09/2026 15:54

Stop being ridiculous.

There's absolutely no evidence that Charles went anywhere near the train the night before.

thegrumblingkitten · 17/09/2026 15:58

I'm not a royalist and think they should fund their own lives.

That said, I believe the earl. I have zero doubt Charles was raging about the attention her death was getting, the blame being lobbed at him and his mother for the way she'd been treated, and the vitriol he knew he'd be facing if he walked behind her coffin if he didn't have her young sons there to 'protect him' from it. They shouldn't have been forced to do that; I believe the earl when he said they were made to do it to protect Charles essentially from public comments that would otherwise likely have been directed at him along the route (that were unlikely to be lobbed at him if her children were there).
