Details about the funeral didn’t really seem to fit in any of the other threads so started this one

It’s looking like there’s going to be a very large turn out of royals at Harald’s funeral on Wednesday.

Prince William will be representing Charles III
Princess Anne will also attend - she is a godmother to Haakon.

The King & Queen of Sweden (he is one of haakon’s godparents)
Crown Princess Victoria & Prince Daniel (Harald was Victorias godparent)
Prince Carl-Philip & Princess Sofia
Princess Madeleine & Chris O’Neilk
Princess Cristina & Tord Magnusson

King Willem-Alexander & Queen Maxima
Princess Beatrix
Princess Amalia, The Princess of Orange

King Philippe & Queen Mathilde

King Frederik and Queen Mary
Queen Margarethe (also one of Haakon’s godparents)
Crown Prince Christian
Princess Benedikte

Crown Prince Fumihito & Crown Princess Kiko

Grand Duke Guillaume & Grand Duchess Stephanie
Grand Duke Henri

King Felipe & Queen Letizia
Queen Sofia

Prince Albert of Monaco

A big turn out from some of the royal houses, not unexpected, from the ones closest to the Norwegian families

How do you know who's going?

JustAnotherWhinger · 06/09/2026 08:05

The royal houses have been announcing over the last few days who will be attending.

How do you know who's going?

There is a Wiki page devoted to the funeral and there have been new additions each day

AustenitesUnite · 06/09/2026 09:08

I've been watching the live coverage of the lying in state each morning and it appears that, until 9.00 a.m., various categories of people are able to skip the queue before the general public are allowed in

I've seen police officers and some religious leaders. Does anyone know who the other people are? I thought, on Friday, that some of them may be ambassadors.

AustenitesUnite · 06/09/2026 09:10

Also, does anyone know if there will be another memorial service today? I watched the ones from Oslo and Trondheim last Sunday

AustenitesUnite · 06/09/2026 09:13

Sorry, one more question! Does anyone know the significance of the flag which is flown from the balcony of the Royal Palace? It has black ribbons attached.

I've watched a recording of King Olav's funeral and, immediately after his burial at Akershus Fortress, the flag was removed so I'm wondering whether it's to signify the length of court mourning or something like that?

JustAnotherWhinger · 06/09/2026 20:58

Queen Margarethe has been admitted to hospital in Denmark with a blood clot and dehydration so will no longer attend the funeral on Wednesday

In the procession from the Royal Palace to Oslo Cathedral King Haakon, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, Prince Sverre Magnus and Princess Martha Louise will walk behind the coffin.

Queens Mette-Marit and Sonja will follow by car.

It also says that foreign royals, heads of state and prime ministers will also walk in the procession. It’ll be very interesting to see which foreign royals that will include.

So sorry to hear about Queen Margrethe of Denmark. Hope she makes a speedy recovery

I've just been looking at the live stream from the Royal Palace in Oslo and it looks as though a lot of the flowers have been moved overnight. I would guess they're starting to prepare the area for the funeral and need more space for the military outside the palace?

I wonder whether we will see the foreign Royals at the lying in state as we did for QEII? I would imagine most, if not all, of them will arrive tomorrow

Am wondering what particular stick will be used to beat PW as he represents the King - having flashbacks to the thread on here for the Pope’s funeral service….

It's unfortunate timing for W&C, as it's also George's first day at Eton, which I guess is why C isn't also going.

BitOutOfPractice · 07/09/2026 10:28

Not reading what section this was in, I eagerly clicked thinking it was about the King Harold from 1066 and all that.

LlynTegid · 07/09/2026 10:30

At least one hotel has cancelled all bookings which is not very good in my opinion, to make way for some of those attending. Apparently at Norwegian government requisitioning so no choice.

And Kate isn't close to the Norwegian royals like the Danish or Swedish.
I guess the Danish Queen Margrethe II is quite sad she can't join. The two knew each other their whole lives and had a very close friendship, often calling each other cousin even though they were great-cousins.

Oh, I thought this was a thread about Harald Hardrada!!!

A bit of history!

Margrethe and Harald were second cousins, but the relationship is actually closer than conventional second cousins because Margrethe was Harald's second cousin on both his paternal and maternal side through first cousin marriage.

In addition, there is a strong connection with the royal families of Norway and Denmark because Harald's grandfather, King Haakon VII was originally a prince of Denmark before he was elected King of Norway. Both families are members of the royal House of Glucksburg

@AustenitesUnite the dress code for the Pope's funeral was black or dark blue suits for men. PW wore a dark blue suit - Mumsnet was not happy
Prince William not in black at Pope's funeral | Mumsnet

Easter/Spring 2025 was a rollercoaster on here for PW. People were seething that PW hadn't attended the family service - seeing it as evidence he was lazy/didn't support his father/was a heathen. It then transpired that PW and family attended Easter Sunday in Norfolk...

I think William made a big mistake in not wearing a black suit to the Pope's funeral. I think it was a sign of disrespect, particularly as he's going...

I think George's first day at Eton is tomorrow, i.e. Tuesday, the day before the funeral.

I don't think Catherine would be going in any case.

William followed the instructions to wear a dark suit, and wore one in dark blue. He was criticized on MN for not wearing black. Many other people at the funeral ( including my president) didn't wear black, and several women ignored the request to wear head coverings.

In short, William followed the dress code and was still criticized for doing so.

BemusedAmerican · 07/09/2026 18:49

Might I add that I was raised Catholic, and the men in my family wore dark blue or grey to funerals. No one owned a black suit.

Is it being shown on tv anywhere ?
My tv listing is now showing it .
Just wondering if it was on a different channel?

KatherineParr · 09/09/2026 10:50

There seem to be some livestreams on YouTube

ITV news have a livestream on YouTube that’s currently showing all of the military personnel getting into position. It’s very impressive.
