The King's letter in full:
Following the decision by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to relocate to the UK, we have received a number of requests for Guidance. To help avoid doubt or confusion, The King has directed that the following information be shared.

It is well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of The Sovereign, and are no longer working Members of The Royal Family. This position, distinct from the State and Royal duties undertaken by the working Royal Family, and with the personal latitude it brings the couple in respect of financial independence and protection of their privacy as they would wish, will continue to be fully respected.

It follows that there is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used. The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity. In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.

Any specific questions from official and State organisations about the courtesies which should be extended to the Duke and Duchess, and particularly where recourse to public funds may be required, should be directed to Buckingham Palace. Any operational security issues should continue to be directed to the relevant Police authorities.

All correspondence and administrative questions relating to the couple should be sent directly to their office, which will continue to operate separately from The Royal Household.

The Right Honourable The Lord Benyon GCVO

What about H's role as "Prince of England?

JoanChitty · Today 16:15

Well I’m glad the King has finally clarified their position. Everyone knows where they stand and there should be no more confusion. Hopefully someone has explained what this means to Huggy and Druggy In simple terms.

I read a bit then got kicked over to “subscribe to read more!” and didn’t mind. It was trying a bit hard.

I wasn’t getting what she meant by Ravec as a verb. For some reason I kept picturing the Sussexes in a Scooby Doo episode.

Did Harry play Rugby? Maybe Archie won’t be interested.

The 'Rugby thing' has made me think. 'Soccer'/Football is pretty popular here these days and there are youth soccer leagues from practically toddler age to age 18. There are plenty of city/county leagues for adults. Not to mention the growing pro soccer league. So H can hardly say "I need to move to the UK so I can watch Archie play football", can he?

So that leaves Rugby as a reason to return 'for sport'. But my son now in his 30s played Rugby all the way through High School. One of his teammates was offered a Rugby scholarship to Stanford, who have fielded a team since 1906. There are also 'touch Rugby' clubs for both the little 'uns and for youth or adults who don't want 'full contact' Rugby. Albeit they aren't as popular or ubiquitous as soccer/football, so not always in all areas. But still, theoretically H could have watched Archie play Rugby here, too.

In fact, right up the road from Montecito......

The Swedish royalty magazine - Svensk Dam Tidning - are reporting that Prince William and Princess Anne will represent the King at the funeral of King Harald of Norway on Wednesday.

I think this will mean that William misses Prince George's first day at Eton - although theoretically it could perhaps be done.

Re the line ‘titles are in abeyance’ does this mean that they will be known as Mr and Mrs Mountbatten-Windsor?

You've forgotten. Meghan is Sussex now. 😁

drivinmecrazy · Today 16:18

Sorry to repeat my previous question, but apparently this statement has been sent to ‘stakeholders’.
so I’m asking who are the stakeholders.
I can make my own assumptions, senior members of RF and any government office that deals with the intricacies of the monarchy.
Any ideas who the stakeholders encompass?

Very curious as to which organisations have requested guidance from BP.
In my humble opinion it looks like H&M have been offering their services to the establishment. Would not surprise me if H had been reaching out to military organisations.

I sense the Prince of Wales’ hand in this letter perhaps….

eta. I think he is beyond caring what they “blame“ him for

Edited

Quite. He’s had enough and he’s in no mood for any kind of conciliation with HaM, and I don’t blame him. H has been accusing him of all kinds of things for ages so he might as well take the gloves off.

Thedom · Today 16:20

The Sussex leaks have been absolutely manic, it’s been crazy. .

Glad Charles is trying to draw a line under it, it had to happen. I can’t wait for the Sussex’s snotty retort, if there is no retort at all it is clear they will have been suitably chastised.

They create chaos everywhere they go.

I bet HAM had some quasi royal walkabout on the horizon and RF got wind of it

@AcrossthePond55 Here in NYC, cricket is being played unofficially in the local parks. My brother watches daily games when he walks his dog. I'm sure HAM could find a cricket league for the kids in LA if he looked.

Yes that’s what I suspected. It’s not that long until Remembrance Sunday and H needs somewhere to be photographed placing a wreath.

Absolutely. Status isn't security. They told Oprah not only that Archie wouldn't get a royal title because of his ethnicity, but also no security.
From the get go, they have made that mistake.

Status isn't security.

I know I'm late on this topic, but it is to M who doesn't apply RF standards to her precious self. In Hollywood mentality (which is her mentality) the more and better security one has and does not pay for oneself the higher one's status is. Therefore it's imperative that the HamFam get the highest level of security and that someone else pays for it.

Thanks for posting the letter in full, @OliveMyLove.

Sometimes careful wording can be beautiful.

Specific things I have noticed (others will probably see more)

Their status is exactly the same.

There is a hardening of the situation around 'HRH' - it was never stated quite as categorically before, to my recollection. I do wonder if this is another indication of moving towards keeping the style purely for working royals.

The third paragraph will close down embarassing 'semi-royal' overseas tours: official and State organisations are to consult with Buckingham Palace first,

DaisyDooley · Today 16:24

Oh thats turned a mediocre Monday into something quite delicious!
Hopefully now it will dampen down all of the posters who have been insisting that the King is weak.
This should stop any HIHO nonsense in its tracks and makes it quite clear TO THE WORLD that they are NOT members of the Working RF.

What struck me though is that the statement released by BP after the Sandringham summit said (from memory) “While Harry Meghan and Archie remain much loved members of the family……” there’s none of that sentiment in this announcement.

It’s cold and factual and lays out quite clearly their position.
Wonder how that “You can’t stop us” sentiment to the Prince & Princess of Wales is going now!
There was never any doubt in my mind that BP would get exasperated.
Im delighted for William & Catherine - it utterly shores up their high position and shuts up all the noise.
And, FWIW I hope now that there is zero expectation by HaM of being invited to Catherine’s Carol Concert and Christmas at Sandringham.
I think the whole family -esp Anne, Zara &Mike, Peter, Edward & Sophie -are sick to the back teeth of them.

Let’s wait for the clapback. What fun & jolly japes 🍿

I guess anyone thinking of inviting HAM to an event

  • charities
  • local authorities/schools etc
  • hospitals
  • businesses
  • overseas countries for faux tours
  • government
  • local police forces
etc etc

It makes me wonder if - behind the scenes - HAM have been demanding "royal privileges" that go beyond what non-working royals such as Zara, Peter, James and Louise, receive? Maybe they demanded police presence for the school run etc?

My guess will be another "dignified" pass ag statement along the lines of the "service is universal" one from back in the day.

"He's not the Prince of England as he claims, because if he'd been paying attention for more than 5 minutes he'd know that no such title exists.

I am really surprised at the tone - it’s crystal clear and pulls no punches. Not what I expected but it absolutely needed to be said, and said before the Sussexes and their supporters start any nonsense with royal cosplaying.

Phew!

If the Closer piece is anything to go by, William will get the blame though.

I suspect Charles waited to see how they would behave during the unexpected move back. Well we've seen what they have been briefing so he very wisely made it crystal clear that nothing has changed as far as the Institution is concerned.

I commend his restraint in not starting FFS.
