It's really interesting that when the first TV documentary was made with the co-operation of the Royal Family in the late 1960's, there was a huge discussion about whether the RF should have done it or not as there was still, at that time, an air of mystique about the RF which I believe the QM cultivated. That film is quite tame in what it portrayed, family picnics, QEII taking PE to a shop to buy an ice-cream etc etc
The RF are not celebrities in the accepted sense of that word and, to some extent, need to keep an aura of 'other worldliness' about them to maintain their position
They therefore have to keep a balance between their private & public lives with their public lives being on show but their private lives being shared in a well-managed way such as photo calls on the first day at school. Most of them manage this extremely well but once they have crossed a certain line there is no going back
The details which PH wrote in Spare regarding losing his virginity, his drug use and his intimate medical problems, together with all the other shenanigans since he met MM have crossed the line and landed them a million miles beyond it.
It means than PH can never, & I mean NEVER, have a serious role again.
The RF use a lot of soft diplomacy and are skilled at saying things without saying anything which is controversial or political or could be misconstrued. I hate to say it but PH isn't very bright, has proved himself to be incapable of learning from his mistakes and has a very long track record of ignoring advice.
Yes, a lot of us had a soft spot for him and were prepared to forgive him for the odd mistake as he grew up. But he has well and truly moved beyond that and has never matured into someone who can see both sides of a story and take appropriate action
It's so, so sad and very disappointing that he has turned out this way.
