Unofficial Draft Guide to RFF

MrsStarkey · 29/07/2026 20:26

Was I the only one that felt a little badly for the MN team member who tried to get our input in order to help build a guide for this forum recently? That didn’t go as planned!

Am in the only one who laughed about Justine’s “The Royal family forum
is deranged” comment and can take it in stride? That thread was definitely an example!

I am proposing we try again and help crowd source a guide. I just ask that we don’t be so RFF, and have a sense of humor while we do so. I’ll paste my draft attempt below. Everyone is welcome to contribute however they like.

Mulder was ruined for me when he did a naked photo shoot with strategically placed bone china. Still gives me the ick.

I was sure sufficient time had elapsed to have wiped that particular image from my mind - turns out I was wrong!! 😳

Me too! , unfortunately I accidentally stumbled onto a documentary about him on sky the other night and “whoops there it is!” 😬

I have that documentary on my ‘to watch’ list - thanks for the advanced warning 😁

RecoIIectionsMayVary · 02/08/2026 12:11

Apologies for bringing this thread down, I will certainly avoid that documentary. I do not wish to choose to have a 'whoops there it is' moment 😂

Was rather an unpleasant surprise in an otherwise interesting programme! 😬
forewarned is forearmed however! Atleast @IAmATorturedPoet , now knows what she’s facing 😁.

CathyorClaire · 02/08/2026 20:37

Wow.

I wasn't an X-Files fan. I did try to up my pop cult knowledge a while back and unfortunately still found it deadly dull and formulaic but you all made me look into this 👺

The only teapot disaster I'd ever heard of until now was the Changing Rooms classic but...hmm. Naked antics in LA, eh?

Where have we heard that before and what is it about the place?

Da da da duh dee 👽

I don’t wish to corrupt you Cathy …but prior to his success in the xfiles David duchovney ….did have moderate success in the …”red shoe diaries” …a slightly soft porn erotic series ( that my roommate was obsessed with!!) , personally I didn’t watch it and what was thrust upon me …was shite and the plot sucked! 🤷‍♀️

An Instruction for Newcomers with an Alternative Mindset:

The Situation: If you post with different values, a different mindset, or an alternative opinion, you will at times encounter the phrases "don't feed the pigeons" or "don't feed those under the bridge."

The Response: These initial phrases are typically followed by a succession of similar comments and related GIFs from regular posters.

The Why: This collective repetition is designed to systematically shut down the conversation. By labeling an alternative viewpoint as a bad-faith "troll" or a "nuisance," it bypasses the need to engage with a different outlook.

The Outcome: Newcomers should be aware that this technique is used to maintain a single-perspective consensus. While it effectively closes down what could be an interesting, multi-perspective discussion, knowing the pattern helps you understand that your differing opinion is simply being managed rather than refuted

In my experience, dfferent values, mindsets and opinions are typically met with counter posts in a spirit of conversation.

The references to trolls and pigeons arise when a poster is continuously, post after post, spouting one of the various recognisable pro-Sussex scripts without attempting conversation. Such posters also tend to target individual posters with mis- quotes and scolding to provoke a derail.

ETA - in other words, dissenting views are welcome, Sussex Squad not so.

simpsonthecat · 03/08/2026 21:36

To add to the above, if you have a different opinion and don't necessarily agree that everything the Sussexes do is awful, you will possibly be labelled as part of the 'Sussex Squad' even if you have absolutely nothing to do with them and find being labeled as such insulting

jeffgoldblum · 03/08/2026 23:44

Just to add! , if you criticise the Sussex’s for their actual behaviour, you will be labelled as a monarchist or royalist!
even if these labels are false and you find them insulting!

MrsStarkey · 04/08/2026 03:59

👋Excuse me folks. 👋
Could we get this thread back off topic please?

so true. makes me lol that people don't like being called haters, but throw insults like SS/Pigeons about. its not clever , just childish.

LipglossAndLies · 04/08/2026 10:15

Well a newcomer only has to see how threads derail right here and by long term posters no less. Why don't you all go start a thread in the tv/movies board and talk about it there? 💁‍♀️

And the first to make personal attacks too aswell as labelling people and putting them in neat boxes like you are a sussex squad member. 🙄 all because you dare to have a different opinion and as you can see having one means you are not posting in good faith by them.

So for newcomers beware this is exactly what you will experience, because rather than consider your views they love the goalposts to attacking you instead.

jeffgoldblum · 04/08/2026 10:18

It makes me lol , that apparently it’s not obvious that people don’t like being called “haters” and as a consequence they might have a few labels they will use in defence! 😁

Sorry @MrsStarkey! Apparently people only like to stay on topic when they can use it to attack other posters they don’t agree with! 🤷‍♀️

I very kindly asked long ago that this thread not be used to attack others or create divisions. Most have abided. It’s been lovely, it’s meandered, fans, squad, royalists, haters, republicans, monarchists and those that cannot be labeled are rubbing along quite nicely. It’s a thread to join people not divide them. It’s been fun.

So please, let’s avoid the unpleasantness. My comment about staying off topic was a joke. But I did not start this thread for an airing of the grievances. If that’s what you’d like to do this is not the thread for you.

The phrase “playing chess with a pigeon" originated from a March 2005 Amazon book review by philosopher Scott D. Weitzenhoffer. He wrote that debating creationists is like a pigeon knocking over pieces, pooping on the board, and strutting as if it won.

It’s in use all over MN and the internet.

You can look up the origin of that other term. Nasty business and I’ll not engage but the people who are part of that group coined it and consider it a badge of honor rather than an insult.
