If Andrew had been left money by Elizabeth he would have had to pay tax. We know he didn't.
Money is transferred monarch to monarch to avoid tax.
Elizabeth may have asked Charles to give Andrew a set amount though.

How do we know Andrew didn’t pay tax on any inheritance?

The bulk goes to the monarch to keep the bulk of the assets together so places like Balmoral/Sandringham, the jewel collections etc don’t have to be sold to pay inheritance tax.

But there’s nothing to suggest that other bequests aren’t made to family and friends.

I’m fairly sure the Queen would have left some significant sum to her other three children and perhaps the grandchildren too.

The finances of the duchy of Lancaster are published and show all of Elizabeth's estate went to Charles.
This is simple tax planning. Otherwise Andrew would have to pay 40% tax on anything received. But Charles pays nothing.

So Charles has loads of dosh to splurge on Andrew - great. Did someone mention circular?

But she also had private funds and investments, and other assets aside from the annual Duchy income.

Yes, I agree with you that the bulk of the estate is passed to the monarch to prevent having to break it up to pay inheritance tax.

But there’s also a strong possibility that her other children were given individual inheritances - possibly in trusts to avoid paying tax all at once.

Constantrunner · 10/10/2026 18:30

All the reporting at the time said that did not happen and that Andrew was unhappy about it

I’m sure Andrew would be unhappy with anything less than the whole lot.

Reporting at the one was just speculation - no one actually knows who was left what. Apart from Charles getting the bulk of the physical assets.

I’d imagine Andrew was up to his eyes in debt so I don’t suppose whatever he was left was enough.

Kirschcherries · 10/10/2026 20:05

I have said this before but gifting money more than 7 years before someone dies means there is no inheritance tax to pay. I cannot believe the late Queen did not set up trusts or gift money to her children and grandchildren more than 7 years before she died.

I can also believe that the incumbent monarch uses their Duchy and private income to provide annual allowances to family members. KC as PoW spent c£4m supporting W & H prior to megxit.

MW was cited as the third richest royal as recently as 2019 :

My guess is there are millions stashed offshore but he's determined to milk what he can anyway.

LifeIsTooShort247 · 11/10/2026 09:49

It does feel like they are tryin to turn this around and rehabilitate his image.

AlwaysRightISwear · 11/10/2026 09:52

A vain attempt. He is surely beyond any rehabilitation.

AMW has been involved in so many murky deals, trips, invitations, etc - you would have thought so. He has been asked to attend a court case, scheduled for December, over the former Goldman Sachs banker Selman Turk (this was the Swiss chalet controversy)

Turk was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment in 2024 after being held in contempt of court for hiding payments, including funds directed to Sarah Ferguson, Mr Mountbatten-Windsor's former wife.

The presiding judge, Mr Justice Mann, determined that Turk had concealed a £212,676.56 payment to the duchess and had produced a "false invoice by way of explanation."

Mann observed at the time that "there is no doubt that there was some sort of relationship" between Turk and the Yorks.

Court proceedings also revealed that Ms Ferguson had sent Turk a written invitation for him and his wife to dine at Royal Lodge.

CathyorClaire · 11/10/2026 11:27

Selman Turk won a Pitch@Palace award for what was apparently widely considered a very poor performance just nine days before £750k found its way into MW's bank account.

He was also found to be living in a Crown Estate owned Mayfair flat with no evidence of rent being paid.

I think it'll be interesting to say the least if MW testifies under oath in the case.

AlwaysRightISwear · 11/10/2026 13:09

Not sure if I would believe him even under oath

This is an intriguing story:

https://www.express.co.uk/news/royal/2255123/andrew-mountbatten-windsor-bentley-sale/amp

The car was bought new for £220k, expensively resprayed a bespoke colour and like its first owner has barely broken sweat in the six years since it was registered.

It's already passed through two pairs of hands and is now owned by a third.

Any theories?

Personally I'm guessing it was MW who traded it in originally (I doubt he was forced into liquidating assets given his generous access to the royal magic money tree and given he's been seen in top of the range pricy motors since) and it's yet another example of appalling excess and entitlement.

It does look like a lovely car though and I'm sure it'll be a bargain for some super rich punter. Even so I don't think I'd fancy sitting in the same seat he'd parked his lardy arse in.

Brrrr😬

I've just re-read the article and seen the seats offer arse massage.

Double Brrrr. Envy

I'll say again what I've said so often, @HoldMyWine; there really isn't any way at all Andrew will be permitted to enter a witness box

Whatever it takes - a years' long tussle over "incorrectly served papers", a sudden claimed "illness" or anything else - it's just not going to happen

The £12 million was paid to Virginia guiffries when a judge ruled his TV interview could be entered into evidence.

I expect another big payout now to stop Andrew having to appear as a witness.

Kirschcherries · 23/10/2026 18:51

@Puzzledandpissedoff This is a different case I.e. not about VG/Epstein.

AMW is not above the law so it will be interesting to see what happens 8n this case.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/10/2026 19:12

I know, @Kirschcherries, but would believe the same about Andrew never being allowed in a witness box no matter what case concerned

We all remember his performance on Newsnight where he was questioned by just a journo, and the concept of him being cross examined by a professional barrister is unthinkable

CathyorClaire · 23/10/2026 20:16

I think what we know already of the unsavoury Selman Turk connection is intriguing to say the least and who's to say it's not merely the tip of the iceberg?

I'd love to see that buffoon in the witness box and compelled to give honest evidence but given this and coupling it with his talent for both lying and sticking entire feet into his royal gob I'd be surprised to see MW swearing to tell the whole truth and nothing but any time soon whatever some Hizonner says.
