PR Disasters of the The Duke and Duchess of Sussex continued :

  • So far we have Meg using charity events/sick children/vulnerable adults to merch her fashion, with the launch of her new fashion platform
  • She will be appearing on MasterChef Australia
  • Harry claiming to have had therapy when Archie was born, even though he never sought MH help for his ill wife a few short months earlier.

A box with her hair in it??? At a practical level I wonder how likely that is? H was 12 when she died - did someone request clippings of her hair after her death? That seems very strange, and unlikely to have been something a 12 year old would have thought of, though I suppose it's possible it came into his hands at a later date. But is it likely someone took hair clippings? IIRC Paul Burrell laid her out, in Paris, he used to like to talk about dressing her in a special new dress. I think after she came back and the coffin was at Kensington Palace he remained in charge. (Do correct me, I'm going by memory and can't be bothered to check). I can't see him taking locks of hair on that day after her death when he laid her out. And surely neither he nor anyone else would have opened a coffin to do so.
Or had she gifted some locks of her hair in life?

I honestly find it unlikely.

If I recall correctly she had a post mortem when she came back but prior to that Charles and her sisters spent time with her in the hospital room in France. Perhaps one of them took hair clippings.

But that aside I think there would have been ample opportunity for those who wanted to see Diana, and were close enough to be able to view her body to be able to do so (and get hair clippings if they requested them).

I don’t have any hair clippings from a loved one but I know people who do and it brings them comfort.

One of Diana's sisters took hair clippings for the boys when she went to the hospital in Paris with Charles.

I’m sorry, I hadn’t read your post about the hair clippings.

That's terribly sad.

Meghan plays on it, of course. She is his new mummy - it suits her, I would think, to keep him grieving and obsessing about Diana. It's where the 'you need to protect little vulnerable me in the way you couldn't protect your mother' thing comes from. It's all very manipulative. I strongly believe she pushed him to release that statement he put out when most of us didn't even know he was dating her. It was a classic 'look at me, don't look at me....ohhhhh, I am being treated like poor liddle Harry's mum was treated by the terrible press' and what it actually did was generate more attention and interest which , for a publicity vampire, was just marvellous.

Re the timing of the release of the new kiddie candles: I did gasp out loud (again). It’s as though the whole Australian “tour” was to drum up publicity - photos, podcasts, TV news segments, radio phone ins etc - to culminate in the purchase of these candles. She’s not getting traction off her Instagram page; her collabs aren’t working; there’s no more Netflix shows. I get As ever ads on my FB feed periodically but short of billboards how else can she publicise As Ever?

It’ll be interesting to see if the Aussie publicity actually results in sales.

That would seem a long way round as I don’t think the As Ever products are shipped out of the US? I might be wrong.

Really? How odd. I think it's very distasteful. At best a bit Victorian - they used to like mourning lockets with locks of hair in.

It brings some people comfort when they have lost a loved one. I don’t think of that as ‘distasteful.’

He said he kept the hair in a box in the nightstand and it helped them conceive Archie.

That brings too many horrific scenarios 😂

Yes, I think some people like to keep a lock of hair, it's a Victorian tradition, and if it brings comfort, that's a good thing. I wear a ring of my Mum's, but we're all different.

That Sarah Vine piece is spot on.

That Sarah Vine piece is spot on.

I thought the Sarah Vine article was a good piece, she's often been very supportive of the Sussexes, but here she makes good points about Harry, noting that he is "convinced that his charmed existence is a living hell".

Recklessismymiddlename · Yesterday 08:28

Has anyone read sarah vine’s book? So interesting!

I cut a clip of dh’s - I think it’s probably not that unusual a thing to do.

LaMarschallin · Yesterday 08:52

I think having a lock of hair is fine. More cheerfully, I know a few people who've kept a lock of their children's hair from when they were babies.
What's weird is treating it as some sort of holy relic with the power to affect material outcomes.
It's always interesting to me to apply the MN test. If someone posted on MN saying their DH wanted a lock of his mother's hair in the bedroom when they were trying to conceive, or placed the pregnancy test by it in hope of influencing the outcome, they'd told to get their ducks in a row and head for the hills or to get DH to the doctor quick smart.

Yes, I think that's the issue, really. Holy Relic is an apt comparison.

JSMill · Yesterday 09:49

@LaMarschallinI think you have nailed it. As a pp said ‘Spare’ is full of very weird things and you do wonder what is going on in H’s head.

JSMill · Yesterday 09:50

@RecklessismymiddlenameI read some excerpts of the book. It struck me how she felt that she didn’t really belong in the Tory inner circle and seemed to feel inferior to the glamorous Sam Cam. I thought she was treated quite shoddily by her.

I couldn't agree more, PigglyWiggly, and " manipulative" is certainly the word

In particular, whether true or not, I still can't begin to imagine what reading about Meghan's team hawking the possibility of a post-divorce book would have done to Harry's febrile mind, and it's no wonder he leans on the drugs Sad

Typo

You gotta admit though.

Those children really do have spectacular backs of heads.

Hahaha

It makes absolutely no sense. I wouldn't even want a candle inspired by own ffs

Starryfifty · Yesterday 11:37

It's simply so monetise the kids as she's using their titles to promote the candles named after them. Harry should be absolutely mortified after all his spewing about children's privacy etc

It's not like young children are renowned for their delightful smells, is it?

But then I guess the kids I know aren't a Prince and Princess. So there's that.

Exactly! And who are these awful candles marketed at ?

Exactly! And who are these awful candles marketed at ?

I really don't get it.

The scent seems generic and there's no USP other than their 'association' with someone else's children. The price is heading up towards Diptypque levels, and you have to pay for delivery too. Without even getting a chance to sample the fragrance.

At a time when people are worrying about being able to fill their cars or heat their homes, who exactly is the market here? Of course there will always be a market for luxuy even in a recession, but these are not luxe products. Those with money to spend won't be shelling out for an ugly candle inspired by the backs of a stranger's children's heads.

Thedom · Yesterday 12:21

Wonder if we will get a 100th birthday memory from the Sussex camp ? Will be a hard one for them to miss out on ?
