When Charles dies, will the number of people willing to pay their respects as he lies in state be as high? Will he have similar funeral arrangements as the late Queen? Or will arrangements be reduced in keeping with Charles’ pledge to slim down the RF and public costs?

Do you think that given Charles’ reign will be significantly shorter than his mothers, that the public will appreciate such large/expensive arrangements so soon after the passing of Her Majesty.

I like Charles but i don't think he will be here much longer. It will be a winter state funeral i fear.

Oh I hope not. I don't think he'll reach 80, but I thought he might have another year or two.

I love a state occasion, I’d be sorry to see them “dumbed down”. If I had my way all the peers would be in full ermine regalia and weighed down by the family jewels. I appreciate this might rack up the security bills somewhat.

Same, I was highly disappointed in the lack of bling at the coronation. They already have the tiaras and jewels and ermine - get them all out.

And you cannot beat a bit of Zadok the Priest belting out for dramatic crescendo.

It's very unfair that his health is not robust.

I can't see how fairness comes into it. Most people in their mid-seventies are likely to have some kind of health issue.

I think, if you look at the 'average' British life, in terms of amount of privilege and 'fairness' - not even including those who never got to anywhere near to 70 - I think Charles would be significantly north of that bar!!

CathyorClaire · 05/01/2026 21:50

I wonder then why C felt the need to commission twelve new pieces.

Jimpson · 05/01/2026 22:10

No, there won’t be as many people wishing to personally pay their respects but there will still be a huge amount of interest. If an additional bank holiday is granted most people will be even more willing to offer a few warm words about him.

Because it's good to promote and support British artists on a global stage, dunno, it's what I would do.

Absolutely, what better stage on which to promote the arts?

It might have been quite a relief for some of the peers that they weren’t expected to wear their ermine, I think it’s very costly to restore. I wouldn’t have minded a few tiaras though.

To highlight British composers?

I don’t think we’ll see the high number of people queuing to see the coffin. I know people who queued for the Queen who say now they realise she must have known Andrew was guilty when she helped to pay off Virginia, that they regret paying their respects to her and they will never do it again for any monarch.

I hope to see his funeral scaled back as he reads the mood of the country.

I've asked before for a poster to list all twelve without resort to Google.

Prove me wrong 😎

I got as far as Andrew Lloyd Webber...

Ohpleeeease · 07/01/2026 22:05

Why? It’s not a pub quiz! Surely the point is to introduce people to music and composers they haven’t heard before, which these commissions did.

Twonewcats · 08/01/2026 04:28

Ohpleeeease · 05/01/2026 11:48

Does it matter? It’s been described as treatable but not curable. Either way, he’s not in the best of health.

It does matter in the context of the thread! You can't say he has terminal cancer, then say it doesn't matter whether it's actually terminal or incurable.

Calliopespa · 04/01/2026 16:27

This is such a grotesquely vulture-like thread op.

Agreed. Just another excuse to bash the RF - don't know why I expected it to be any different tbh.

80DaysAroundTheLounge · 08/01/2026 07:36

I'd have more respect for him if he opted for a direct cremation.

The op was respectful in how she asked the question and if the RF do not want people commenting on their births, marriages and deaths then they shouldn’t invite the British public to share these occasions with them. Until then, imho, I am afraid it is a matter for legitimate comment.

HoppityBun · 08/01/2026 22:00

ElizaMulvil · 05/01/2026 16:27

Do we think Charles is now lying awake worrying ( as the Head of the Church of England btw) about his future? Or does he not really believe in Christ's words?

'It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle that for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.'

Or do billionaires have a free pass?

I often think that about the RF and other prominent, rich Christians. They can’t really believe that, can they.

Of course many people will show their respects.
KCharles has done a lot for the environment, preservation of buildings and for minority groups, and he is a kind and generous soul.
He is being the best King he can manage - and not drawing attention to his major health battles.
It's very unfair that his health is not robust.

Agreed.. I’ve heard him speak on numerous occasions at charity functions and he’s does come across as a lively decent man.

Agreed, the cost of having a Royal Family is spiralling - at a time when many normal people are really struggling. To ask if future events are going to be scaled down a bit is not dis-respectful at all. You could argue it's disrespectful to the British public to not make sensible/pragmatic decisions to reduce costs.

Twonewcats · 09/01/2026 01:33

Why are many posters saying they think he'll pass away this year? In his bday photos in November, and in the Xmas Day speech, I thought he looked better than he has for a while

It's not a pub quiz! It's a moment to promote Britain. But fwiw I do know 2 of them were Tarik O'Reagan (because I did Google at the time as I thought the piece beautiful) and Paul Mealor (as I was curious as it was Welsh). I looked them all up, but those were the 2 who stuck in my brain.

Im sure I wasn't alone in doing that, I think I even downloaded one of the pieces onto my Spotify.

Same as I did with the Sheku Kenneh-Mason who performed at H&Ms wedding as I thought he was utterly wonderful.

Actually, thanks for reminding me, I'll need to listen to them all again.
