Hopefully Charles has many healthy years ahead but……

When Charles dies, will the number of people willing to pay their respects as he lies in state be as high? Will he have similar funeral arrangements as the late Queen? Or will arrangements be reduced in keeping with Charles’ pledge to slim down the RF and public costs?

Do you think that given Charles’ reign will be significantly shorter than his mothers, that the public will appreciate such large/expensive arrangements so soon after the passing of Her Majesty.

When he vows to slim down the RF, isn't that just him wanting to cut down the number of people on the fringes who benefit - rather than wanting to make any sacrifices himself?

Selling off or giving away some of his own opulent residences would also help to slim down their reach and operations, but I'm not aware that he's been clamouring to do this yet?!

Besides, the mindset of a royal is very different from the mindset of us ordinary people. Prince Philip insisted that he 'didn't want any fuss' on his account after his death... I'd hardly describe his funeral as 'no fuss'!

Of course many people will show their respects.
KCharles has done a lot for the environment, preservation of buildings and for minority groups, and he is a kind and generous soul.
He is being the best King he can manage - and not drawing attention to his major health battles.
It's very unfair that his health is not robust.

batsh1ttery · 04/01/2026 03:14

Nope. Wrong time wrong era. The monarchy couldn’t be more ineffective now. Maybe if he hands down the sovereignty to his oldest son we might get a young family monarchy up to speed with present times. Queen Elizabeth did her neutral bit. Charles was never going to. If anything I think Charles and Camilla will be waved off as they die. Nice little closing chapter for them. I still believe, unlike most in the British monarchy. And with that bring in the young Royal Family. Let’s see how they do.

What specifically has he “done for minority groups”?

HoppityBun · 04/01/2026 04:27

No idea.

Are you the same poster who recently started a thread to ask how we’re all managing after the death of QE2, do we have a photo of KC on our mantelpiece and when did we all stop wearing black?

PrestonHood121 · 04/01/2026 04:46

Will our country really need foot the bill to have Andrew and Harry, and Harry’s unseen children stand vigil just because they are his family? Let them all mourn in private.

I agree. I think Charles is a decent person and many people realise this and will honour him.
Even Andrew Lownie describes Charles as a very kind man.
I wish he could be in charge of the UK strategy for the climate and planning/ architecture.

What would a RF up to speed look like. There is much talk of them 'modernising', but putting aside that the institution itself is staggeringly outdated, what does modernising mean.

How is he generous? How is he kind? What has he actively done for the environment except talk about it?

‘Do less and expect more money’ I suspect.
My opinion of the Royal family is at an all time low, reading Andrew Lownie’s book and Norman Baker’s ‘And what do you do’ should be compulsory reading. It’s utterly shameful and sickening that the royals get away with so much, just because they can.
I don’t know what the alternative is but I for one won’t be weeping and wailing and queuing up to file past any time soon.

Kindling1970 · 04/01/2026 08:06

If Charles was a decent monarch who cared about his ‘subjects’ he would have paid inheritance tax to help the uk. He also basically owns Cornwall, one of the most deprived parts of the uk. How is he helping people there?

he is another monarch who is self serving and hoards wealth at a time of national austerity

bluegreygreen · 04/01/2026 14:00

He also basically owns Cornwall, one of the most deprived parts of the uk.

Some facts:
The Duke of Cornwall is the Prince of Wales, not the King.
The Duchy of Cornwall owns just over 18500 acres in Cornwall. The area of Cornwall is 1,375 square miles (1 sq mile = 640 acres).

He didn’t want any fuss, but obviously his family wanted to honour him and pay their respects.

MrsMoastyToasty · 04/01/2026 14:07

The Duchy of Cornwall also owns plenty of land outside the county. The Oval cricket ground and land in Newton St Loe just outside Bath are 2 examples I know of.

That's correct - the Cornwall holdings are about 13% of the entire estate. I was responding to 'he ... basically owns Cornwall'.

Tattiana · 04/01/2026 14:12

I like Charles. A lot more than I expected to. I know many people who feel the same way.

i wouldn’t queue up to see him or anything (loved the Queen but wouldn’t have done that for her either) but I did go and see the Queen’s hearse speed through the city. I’d do the same if it was Charles.

simpsonthecat · 04/01/2026 14:13

Parts of Dorset, Herefordshire and Wales. And of course the Isles of Scilly

The Duchy owns more land outside of Cornwall than inside. In over 23 counties in fact.

BePoisedPlumUser · 04/01/2026 14:29

He charges charities rent to use his land. That makes him a terrible person in my book.

jeffgoldblum · 04/01/2026 14:30

Ultimately it won’t matter what Charles wants for his funeral, the government at that time will dictate what and how big it will be.

As if..his funeral had been planned for years with him choosing the hymns etc

Well, anyone can plan their own funeral including choice of music and readings, and many do.

Generally not in Westminster Abbey, being pulled along on a gun carriage etc!

Yes that's the point. He knew it wouldn't be low key and planned it that way

If we're still talking about Prince Philip, his funeral was in St George's Chapel in WIndsor Castle.
