Here's a summary for you - it's full of British traditions like cracker pulling which she explains 🙄 , how to decorate a tree with lights and wearing matching pyjamas with her friends. Harry appears for the last 5 mins.

As this is a thread about Meghan's tree I hardly dare ask if Kate Winslet was in her dungarees and wellies? That is NOT a preposterous question. She's had her sausage and mash moments when it was trendy 'to do like the plebs'.

Old men who have their legs amputated are quite ill, I think.

Music Video Wtf GIF

what the heck ?

Meghan is not getting as much clicks anymore on her Insta, low millions, still a lot, but for someone pushing everything in the way she does, a Netflix show, her name recognition, and with People Magazine on speed dial, the interest from not even a year ago has really dissapated.

Looks to me like the posts featuring H or the children get far more clicks than just M.

You don’t have to spend anything to promote British businesses. Catherine chooses to and good for her. She’s worn plenty of high street makes in the past, and now she’s wearing something in a higher price bracket. They will no doubt be worn repeatedly and handed down as an heirloom piece as many of Diana’s pieces were. No big deal to anyone but the patronising and the churlish. Did Saint Norman Baker put a price cap on goods/businesses she’s allowed to promote?

I wonder if the Susan Caplan pearls worn this week would be cheap enough for VanessaSanesssa to approve - as if that were needed.

Perhaps read the book and you might be more informed.

Yes good for her indeed. I wonder where the £12k came from. Oh yes, their private wealth. I wonder where that came from.

Posters can laugh between themselves about my opinion or make fun of my opinion however a bit of critical thinking never hurt anyone. But I guess sycophancy is easier when it comes to the royals.

Her Insta content is very dull and dated. Usually some rather boring domestic 'activity' with a twee musical background. Nothing really to engage with.

I agree that the viewing figures are very low for someone with her name recognition, and unless she does something major to turn things around, it's likely downhill from now on.

Maybe I just don’t spend my time fretting about what other people spend their money on. A very peculiar occupation I was thankfully not brought up with, being an immigrant’s child and not mentally suppressed by the class system in the UK. Should I be complaining about all the money DH and I put in other people’s pockets - people who don’t have what we have - and what they spend it on?

Assuming full price was paid, that money went into the British economy by supporting a British business.

Would you prefer she left it gathering interest in an offshore account?

VanessaSanessa · 06/12/2025 13:55

It might surprise you to know that I am not English, so the British class system doesn't overly bother me. However I do find the upper class, royalty etc to be a corrupt system. It's not an occupation to me, so don't try and shut down debate by throwing insults, I've not done that to anyone here.

I merely pointed out that people who profess to know what the general public are going through, could do better at being more in line with their subjects! If William has any sense then he'll try and align his monarchy to a more modern one that identifies with the public more. If they want to continue with the castles, jewels, hidden finances, closed wills then fine but shut up about knowing what the general public think, feel or need. Does anyone here really think that a homeless person who is listening to the royals go on about their plight can identify with someone paying £12k for a pair of bloody earrings. Really because I certainly wouldn't. And this isn't about Kate, spending or earrings, it's about what it says.

I have zero interest in fighting about this or trading insults, I never do that on MN.

I think the general vibe of that concert was a very positive one, lets leave it at that.

I am not the child of immigrants (well, maybe Vikings) but I was brought up not to be always fretting about what other people had. Some people had less than we had, in the way of money and possessions, many had more. I don't know if that means I'm suppressed by the class system. Interestingly, a man from the USA told me that I might think there isn't a class system in the US, but that there is.

What 'subjects'?

The category was pretty much abolished 4 decades ago.

Does anyone here really think that a homeless person who is listening to the royals go on about their plight can identify with someone paying £12k for a pair of bloody earrings.

So if Kate had worn earrings that cost, say, £100, would a homeless person 'identify' with her then?

what the heck ?

This thread started as something about MM's tree and it had got as far as the PoW's concert and the children and the temperature and the price of the earrings. In the news report about the concert we saw the PoW talking to actress Kate Winslet, who took part in it. I was wondering if she, also, wore earrings, but I wouldn't be surprised if she turned up in something VERY different. When Kate Winslet married Sam Mendes, before they divorced, sausages and mash were served at the reception. It's fundamentally a very working-class, cheap meal in the UK, if you make it at home, but it was being trendy at the time of their wedding.
A person in my family had a leg amputated, when he was an old man. There seem to be rumours that that has happened to Thomas Markle.
I was making observations about various thoughts that came to me while I was reading a few posts on here, but not all, because I don't have time to stay here all day.

Jewellery is a strange beast and I think you'd need to be an expert to distinguish future heirlooms (when they are being worn) from....well, perhaps not Claire's Accessories but certainly items that are more affordable. Does it give the wearer more pleasure? It must do or they wouldn't buy the very expensive pieces. I have one inherited ring which, for me, is worth silly money (well into 5 figures) but it does make me feel special when I wear it - would a 3-figure, nearly identical-looking one make me feel the same? Probably not. Not sure where I'm going with this except C's earrings looked very nice but I'd never have guessed the cost.

MissFenellaPrism · 06/12/2025 14:25

I think the "£12k for a pair of bloody earrings" is a red herring. It's an easy jibe, isn't it? There's absolutely no way Kate can get this right.
It's very interesting - the threads about Meghan and Harry often end up being critical about William and Kate... mostly Kate.
The threads about Andrew have ended up being critical of William and Kate....mostly Kate.
She came in for a lot of unjustified criticism from Harry and Meghan, and their mouthpiece, Omid Scobie.
Also their friends at the Daily Mail. It's a well trodden path. Nothing original.

upinaballoon · 06/12/2025 14:26

I must reveal that Kate Winslet wore a red trouser suit with somewhat baggy trousers, and white shoes, and she wore hoop earrings which cost £2.99 at a Ripon charity shop, and had had sausage, chips and beans for her dinner.

Well. Surely a woman with her wealth shouldn't shop at charity shops! What about women who can only afford to?
Why isn't she spreading the wealth by supporting UK businesses?

Total pedantry but Kate Winslet had sausage and mash served at her first wedding which was to Jim Threapleton, not at her second which was to Sam Mendes. And it was more about it being 'rustic' and therefore chic, than about being working class - though of course it is, but that wasn't the point.

Yes well that’s the other peculiar past time of modern liberal UK - having to “identify” with someone before you can believe they say anything of value to you or do anything meaningful in your world. A good way to shut your thought processes off and cut off your nose to spite your face. I assume you don’t like all those sad face celebrities, more often than not found dripping in jewels and clothing worth far in excess of £12k earrings, doing advocacy work for Save the Children etc either. I mean, how can a street child in India possibly identify with them?

“Occupying” yourself means spending time doing something. Which you clearly have been doing - reading Baker’s book and coming here to impart his wisdom on the upper classes. As for trading insults, I do believe you accused me of sycophancy, so perhaps don’t give out insults if you don’t want a response in kind.

I agree with you but it's a pity her earrings cost close to £12k, that's where the royals lose me.

I believe those earrings were a gift from her non-royal parents a few years ago. I think there’s a necklace that goes with them too.

Off topic but I was looking at the website for those earrings and as I’m in the USA it offered the price in dollars and they were ‘only’ $9500 which is just over £7000 but if you change to the UK site they are charging over £11,000 which is odd.
