…but bloody hell, I hope he’s got a crack writer’s room for this year’s Christmas Message! I wonder who might be up for it?

“The frothing masses”??

Apparently that is everyone who wants it to be publicly and directly addressed by the King.

Sorry @CurlewKate I forgot to come back to this thread until now, good guess but no prizes for you this time round, Forelock Tugger and Cap Doffer!

Thank you! I’ve never seen either of them- but I like Cap Doffer because doffer is a fab word. I’ll add them both to the list and use them at the first available opportunity.

Or.... just not bother with juvenile insults?
I think you're better than that, surely? 😊

The Christmas speech is the place for dissecting the Andrew issue. It’s a slot to outline the work done by the working members of the royal family, the forces etc and share a Christmas message of hope and goodwill. Andrew hasn’t been a working member for ages. I’m not sure that the departure of Harry and Meghan or their suggestions of racism for example were the subject of previous Christmas speeches.

MrsLeonFarrell · 11/11/2025 08:11

Or maybe the King could copy Traitors and have portraits of all the royals on the wall behind him with a big red cross over Andrew's?

crumpet · 11/11/2025 08:12

MrsLeonFarrell · 10/11/2025 14:10

It will definitely be interesting. I don't think the late Queen should have spoken about her horrible year since it was mostly about family matters iirc. The Head of State imo should speak to the Nation about things that affect all of us not themselves personally. Is like to see it dealt with indirectly by giving attention to charities that help victims.

And it’s interesting that before and after that blip about 25 years ago, that is pretty much what the focus of the speech is.

MinnieCauldwell · 11/11/2025 08:15

The King's Speech has more than likely been filmed, I think QE2 did than around September.

For clarity, it wasn’t me who started it! I just thought it was quite funny. You might want to address the person who introduced the term “frothing masses” to the thread, though…..🤣

He won’t allude to the debacle with Andrew. He’s not going to admit the Queen covered anything up or he knew anything about Andrew’s misbehaviour. I would actually prefer to hear about good things the Royal Family have done to justify their existence.

But the Christmas Day broadcast wouldn’t be the place for this anyway. Those things should be, and largely are being, dealt with separately which is right.

It’s like expecting a bridegroom to go into detail about the pre-wedding rows in what should be a positive and wholly celebratory speech.

Time and place.

Er..some people think differently to you. Newsflash: it doesn’t mean they’re thick or less than you, so how about cutting out the playground insults?

Just a thought.

DelectableMe · 11/11/2025 08:44

Yes, it's a 10 mins slot, which includes a Christmas wish from KC, and a children's choir singing. It's a feel good message from the Head of State on Christmas Day.
I think some people have never watched it and misunderstand it's purpose! 😂

StartupRepair · 11/11/2025 08:46

The Queen did not say annus horribilis in her Christmas speech. It was in a different speech at some public event.

I do think you are taking this a bit seriously. But because you are, I think I need to point out that the first “playground insult” or suggestion of thickness was “frothing masses”, used to describe the…less royalist amongst us. Which I thought was funny and treated accordingly.

I don’t think “ it’s purpose “ trumps the need to acknowledge what a difficult year it’s been thanks to You Know Who. It’s a great opportunity to underline their commitment to suppporting victims of SA too. Just cos he said it in his statement doesn’t mean it’s done with.

Of course there’s a need for balance and he can still say all those positive things that others have suggested.

The King doesn't make it about himself.
He will be well aware that other families in the UK have had a far more difficult time.
His Christmas message is about our nation and the positives to reflect on.

I watch it every year but obviously don’t pay enough attention to the finer details. I can see why he wouldn’t mention it but I suppose I was thinking that, although it’s a family matter, it’s a unique constitutional matter too.

... but he doesn't discuss constitutional matters.
It's sort of a Christmas card to the nation, and acknowledging the many positives over the year. It's usually about charitable endeavours of the public, successful events for the UK etc.
He'll refer to the visit to Rome probably , the 80th anniversary of VE and VJ Day, because that's what's important to collectively celebrate as a nation.

Sidebeforeself · 11/11/2025 09:05

Actually I think I was the person on this thread that the FM comment was aimed at. But I don’t think one person constitutes a mass so perhaps @CurlewKate youd like to join me in some light frothing?!

I get your point but I’m saying I think he should this time

But it's not appropriate.
It's a Christmas message.

Sidebeforeself · 11/11/2025 09:12

Well I think some things are more important

Well, that's your opinion, but it's really not how these Monarch's Christmas messages work!

Sidebeforeself · 11/11/2025 09:21

You keep making the same point so I think you are determined to have the last word. I shall exit the stage and leave you to it ( and go froth somewhere else)
