I don't think they are all eaten by the family but also distributed around the estate. I doubt we are talking thousands of birds.

When I was a child my parents knew a a lot of people who shot. During the seasons people used to leave birds on our doorstep and run away. It’s courgettes from friends with allotments these days…..

What untaxed secret wealth?*

Nobody knows. We have no insight into their off shore funds, investments and god knows what else...

Or the content of royal wills and how those fortunes are distributed. The tax man also doesn’t have the same level of scrutiny on wealth as the few taxes paid on income are “voluntary”. The beneficial tax status for many royal businesses has enabled them to outcompete businesses which have to pay regular taxes and become more profitable.

Most of the current royal wealth has been built by making full use of a century of tax exemption not available to mere mortals. In the time of Victoria they were not exceptionally wealthy.

Same here! We always had pheasents hanging in the garage. My Dad once got sacked as a beater because he was sniggering at the toffs!

I do wonder why the King is so happy for William and Katherine to do this very very part time schedule.

Well, it does depend on which version of the media spin you believe this week, doesn't it?

Feb 24: KC3 tells William to spend more time with his family
https://archive.is/NaxAZ

Sept 25: KC3 irritated by William's workload
https://archive.is/CC5y6

It's just possible that neither is true.

Edited

Exactly. We don't really know very much, it's all rumour and "sources".

I'm all for greater clarity going forward. But at this point in time it fascinates me that Private Eye have chosen to focus on William instead of pushing for Andrew to give evidence to the police or get removed from Royal Lodge.

One thing that people missed from that interview was they asked him what he does at home. He said sleep. My jaw and my whole face really hit the floor. How "lucky " that as a 40 something man he scoots around the palaces and sleeps. The privilege of it. And the tone deafness to just throw that out. Especially in this economy when more than ever, people in the uk are working two jobs but still can't make ends meet. I appreciate he was born into it and some people will be rich and others poor but I just thought wow. How privileged and blind. How turdish. He sleeps

I didn’t read the comment that way, more like he’s only there to sleep ?

I’m a 60 something woman. I like to sleep too. Did your jaw just hit the floor again, Is this “turdish” also?

Excellent post.

It’s not an equivalent. It’s quite different protecting species in the wild to shooting pheasants bred for shooting.

I dislike it (which makes me a hypocrite for eating meat tbf!) but the two are not the same.

You can Google just as easily as I can.

What is the point of Mumsnet then? Google tells me that it was considered a failure but no one set it up... Thanks for your contribution I guess!

You’re welcome. I don’t have any desire to educate you. That’s not what MN is for either 🙄

The 'just like us' narrative is silly, in the same way as look the Queen used tupperware was. But i think it's a response to the strange demands of the public that they simultaneously do royal things whilst never ever living in a way that shows they are not like us.

They aren't like us, if you take 'us' to be ordinary members of the public. But in a large part this narrative is more often pushed by the press, not the palace. And then of course sets them up for some nasty comments which keeps the clicks coming.

Of course it’s the press that drives this.

And by sheer dint of being human beings, there’s inevitably things about them that are relatable to the masses!

jumpingthehighjump · 28/10/2025 08:36

School holidays for them must total about 16 weeks of the year and they rarely, if ever, do any work during them

Personally I think we're being softened up for a 'barely any work when W takes over.' routine. The softening up started even before Kate's illness. There will be 2 lots of footage a year, filmed at their convenience, one autumnal, one spring like with the children frolicking in nature. Birthday pics of the children, and just the necessary attendances like Cenotaph, Trooping oftheC. And that will be IT.

Just my opinion.

My opinion is, you don’t know. Nobody does.

As an aside- there is a purpose to shooting stags. I don’t think it should be done for fun, but it is a legitimate necessity. Game birds are a completely different matter. Most of them aren’t even eaten.

It’s a method of culling. Population control.

I do wonder why the King is so happy for William and Katherine to do this very very part time schedule.

For the finances, the number of properties etc, to be fair to William, he can’t actually make concrete plans until he’s King. He doesn’t know who from his dad’s generation will have been given which house, who will have died, which houses will be being used for offices etc. it could be another decade or two and a lot can happen in that time. Saying now “I’ll sell off xxx property” might come back to bite him.

I do think it’s a sign they haven’t learned that they are assuming Charlotte and Louis will be working royals. We all know this will only be a PR bonus until the day George gets married and has a baby. Then they are the annoying hangers on that’s a problem for George. It’s not setting up a healthy dynamic amongst the kids either.

Do you see Anne and Edward as “annoying hangers on’? I think they contribute hugely to the Firm!

BemusedAmerican · 28/10/2025 11:23

I know this is heresy but maybe if HMTLQ and Princess Diana spent less time being seen and more time parenting, then circumstances might be very different for Andrew and Harry.

💯 this!

I couldn’t actually care less . None of it has the slightest impact on my life. I don’t understand the ‘obsession’!

The royals spend millions on PR companies just like other businesses. Quite often they used those PR companies to attack each other but in the main its to promote the “they are just like us” storyline, the “so hard working” storyline and to gloss over the untaxed secret wealth.
Unlike most billionaires they really do exercise more influence over the press even now. How many editors and press owners turn down dinner at the palace?

Do you have intimate knowledge of the finances of any billionaire?

The majority of billionaires aren't a head of state and accountable to their subjects.

Hopefully you can see the difference.

It matters not whether you care or not about how their finances are run, thankfully a large proportion of the tax paying public do and are pushing for transparency. Its what happens in a democratic society.

The days of unquestionable Royal deference are rapidly eroding.

I think they mate in the wild? They don’t bloody breed them! I presume it’s something comparable with dairy farmers not keeping many bulls, or a sheep farmer having a number of rams proportionate to the number of ewes?

They fight. Much worse death than being shot!

They simply cannot have it both ways. They either benefit massively from public funds and turn themselves over for consumption and work a reasonable amount, like the Queen.

Or they do less but also receive less and fund their own lifestyles and palaces or turn them over to the nation. Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace and Windsor Castle shouldn’t be in the families hands.

Either way, they won’t go wanting - they are a privately wealthy family.
