So there are questions to ask about why the government (ir is it parliament, i.e. the two main political parties) don't allow time for it.

The answer is not that Erskine May doesn't allow it.

Eight thousand people down to two thousand. Ceremony shorter, fewer people with historic roles and weird titles. Simpler robes and tiaras.
I don't know if you have watched all the film or TV coverage of the 1953 one, but it was much grander and more formal and went on for hours.
We had loads of neighbours in watching it on our 9 inch Pye television. 😂

Yes - apparently the King wanted it to be even more pared down, but the government disagreed.

At the King's request there were no tiaras; fewer members of the aristocracy than at previous coronations, no peers' spouses, and a small number of seats allocated to sitting members of the House of Lords. In their place were people who had been awarded the British Empire Medal - for community service. The quote at the time was 'meritocracry not aristocracy'. The other places were taken up by officials/dignitaries.

Did the spokesperson actually say that the RF would not want to take time from other Parliamentary business???

I bet they don't!

At the very least, a Parliamentary intervention resulting in severe sanctions for A might just keep the RF on their toes, and realise that we are a Democracy and Parliament is paramount, not the house of Windsor. Any of them could be next if they act out of line, that would be a great incentive for the RF to behave and be accountable to us.

I agree with pp that this is a pivotal moment for the democratic nature of the country. Either Parliament rules by our democratic vote, or the RF does without. Parliament should take note and do something. I really hope some clever journo will point out how outrageous the (in)actions of Parliament are, fudged as they are to try and hoodwink the people.

Truly awful.

Very well said! When did our MPs become so spineless?

In matters regarding the monarchy? Many centuries ago

From April/May 1660 when parliament invited Charles back from France, and the Restoration of the monarchy happened.

Sources have indicated that Andrew has now been told to 'keep his head down' - and now spends his time playing video games such as war shooter Call of Duty on a giant television screen.

😂😂😂

Where on earth have the DM got that from?

I havent been listening to Any Questions or Question Time but maybe people should be asking those questions regularly and publicly to MP's. There is no mechanism for the RF to be held to account if Parliament dont do it. And they know it. If they can just tell Parliament to not look their way, who is actually in charge here?

There'll be no effective legal action, Mylovelygreendress, unless it involves more money to keep the accusers quiet

We've already seen that Andrew will be allowed nowhere near a court, and if it came to it I'm quite certain a mystery "illness" would be brrought to bear

More tone deaf entitled behaviour from KC3 who has taken back a huge statue at Kew for his private use, leaving them with an expensive hole to fill

Love this quote from that article
The Royal Family has thus inverted the mantra of Percy Bysshe Shelley via Jeremy Corbyn: “For the Few, not the Many.”.
It's their modus operandi, always has been and always will be.

I don’t believe for one moment that William will do that and until it happens, I’d take everything he says with a pinch of salt. He apparently has a great PR team behind him, as does each faction of the family. KC was meant to have a slimmed down coronation but there was no evidence of that.

It was definitely slimmed down, I was quite disappointed, not even a diamond tiara for Sophie and Catherine, I’m not old enough to remember the late Queen’s coronation but I have watched it and found it magnificent, a young beautiful Queen helped of course. I don’t understand this obsession with wanting paired back ceremonies, the pomp and circumstance is what I love, but each to their own. I doubt William will have a very grand coronation, more likely a registry office version.

I agree. The slimming down is all for show. Cutting down on their publuc facing role- the public showcase and bling- having headdresses made for Kate mst have cost more money than just using a tiara for eg- but not the actual expense of them or making them more accountable which would personally impact on them.

It would be unfortunate if a large bronze statue of a naked Hercules was to fall on him…..
