Andrew, Sarah & a Royal Lodge question

MoondustandFairies · 20/10/2025 00:42

Following some of the news stories about Andrew relinquishing Titles & a more local news story saying that he & his ex wife will continue to live in the Royal Lodge makes me wonder how that can be funded. Can they be made to leave if they can't pay?

It has 7 - or 12? - bedrooms so I expect it requires a bit of mopping & dusting each week - so do A & S also employ staff to maintain the property.

Not sure how old they both are either, maybe close to retirement?? but how do they fund a lifestyle without being propped up by the RF. Which prob won't please William too.
Just my tuppence worth question wondering how non working ex Royals with no marketable skills will pay staff wages & buy groceries.

Thats disgusting especially when many people pn here have been making awful comments about H&M using taxpayers money for reno when infact they paid rent and paid the reno costs...meanwhile here we have Andrew not paying rent just reno costs....yet who has been vilified more...i wonder where those posters are now having to eat humble pie I bet.

Not quite the same.

Andrew has what I gather is a fairly common form of long-term lease, whereby the lessee pays money up-front for maintenance/refurbishment, a very low (or peppercorn) rent, and guarantees to hand back the property in good condition at the end (which may mean further costs towards the end of the lease). If the lease ends early the lessee is owed money.
He paid the renovations himself as per the lease.

The Sussexes had Frogmore Cottage renovated to their specification using money from the Sovereign Grant. When they decided to step back they had to repay that money.
They paid a total of 5 months' rent before giving up their lease of Frogmore in March 2023. When they paid back the renovation money they struck a deal that they didn't have to pay any further rent as the property had increased in value.

I don’t see any reason for humble pie whatsoever. They are both entitled grifters on the take and I find your defence of Harry here
quite shocking and entirely tone deaf!

I know, what utter crap. Do people (the plebs) honestly believe that our Billy and Katy are "just like us". Of course they've got bloody staff, a whole team of them. Including gardeners, a nanny, cooks, housekeepers and administrators. I despair at the naivity.

We all know that! The difference is they prefer live out staff. I don’t know how that works in terms of security?

Tiredofbullsit · 22/10/2025 23:29

Spectre8 · 22/10/2025 17:55

Exactly they dont want live in staff cos they want to protect their privacy ao noone hears any arguments etc that could be leaked out.

They have plenty of staff

Can you explain what is wrong with any of that?

Family living in glare of publicity want privacy at home? Shocking!

How many staff have your idols Harry and Meghan got and they are not even working royals?

How about there’s footage taken from a distance of William and Andrew chatting and both smiling /looking happy, at events after Andrew paid millions to a woman he didn’t know?

Or William happily sharing a car with Andrew when there were other cars available and no one needed to share? (Which at the time was happily reported as perhaps Andrew being brought back in from the cold, and no one from William’s PR felt the need to correct that.)

William might hate his uncle. There’s no evidence though.

There’s literally no evidence either way unless you take Lownie’s research into account which if true, tips the balance one way.

Or look at the body language at the DoK’s funeral?

BemusedAmerican · 23/10/2025 02:32

You are naive. I didn't like either of my brothers-in-law, but I doubt a random observer would have ever noticed that fact.

Who is naive?

I can’t stand my SIL who demanded to be my bridesmaid over 30 years ago without waiting for me to ask and has been an intermittent small pain in my arse since then. Culminating with not inviting me, her brother’s wife of over 20 years at that point to her wedding, nor her only blood nieces and nephew.

upinaballoon · 23/10/2025 08:20

He could HAVE done this long before but he didn't.

I of an insect bite on my leg. Er, I mean I HAVE.

CathyorClaire · 23/10/2025 09:41

Just lile it took media and public outrage for him to reduce how much he charhes the NHS to rent space from him. He could of done this a long before but he didnt.

I haven't seen a reported reduction in the rent W charges the NHS, only that he's waived a stonkingly generous £10k for grassroots organisations out of his £22m income.

Oh and an awkwardly unfunny joke about 'lots of sweaty faces round the table' when he apparently floated the question of rent reductions for tenants 🙄

Mumdiva99 · 21/10/2025 07:15

I'm not an Andrew fan. But this is a non-story. The agreement was he paid for the renovations and took that from his rent. So he has paid. Just upfront. Nothing to see here......

I have some sympathy with this.

Peppercorn rents are common. That’s what my daughter pays on her leasehold flat (or rather doesn’t, because no one has ever demanded it).

In her case, it is a one bedroom flat, her lease is for 995 years, she paid an awful lot less for it than Prince Andrew did for his, and the cost of repairs is shared by all the leaseholders as they arise, but the principle is surely much the same.

Whether the initial cost of Prince Andrew’s lease was too small, I have no idea, but rent and house prices were obviously substantially less in 2004 than they are now.

The key thing I think is how he is funding his day to day living costs, which must be enormous with a house that size. As others have said, his navy pension is only £20,000 a year.

I suppose we could say there's a lot more come out since then, @FancyBiscuitsLevel, but wonder if tthere's a clue in "from a distance"?
It seems to me there could be a difference between William knowing he'd be a focus of attention and a shot just happening to be taken, but overall I agree we can't actually know either way what his real attitude to Andrew is

I'm sure that if you were forced to stand by these people, it would not be obvious that you loath them. We all know enough to fake it public. It is entirely possible that William hates Andrew but just doesn't show it.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 23/10/2025 14:47

But that’s the point isn’t it? We don’t know if William hates or likes Andrew, there’s enough “evidence” either way- yet posters confidently say William will deal with him.

BemusedAmerican · 23/10/2025 14:57

Someone just started a thread about William now taking on the Andrew situation.

We've now found out that Andrew may not have been paying his, water bill.

Exactly, a little leak here and there that suggests William this or William that, and people take from it that William's going to come down hard on his detested uncle.

They probably hope that it'll blow over by the time William's king and they can do nothing.

It's the King of the moment that needs to deal with this.

I've seen so many fluff pieces about the Wales family lately. One said Louis had been offered a patronage related to one of his favourite toys/hobbies, and his parents had turned it down as it wasn't yet time for that.

They're not above using their children in PR when they need a bit of fluffy publicity.

Its PR at its finest.

It really is!

Yet the misstep on Friday with Andrew was pronounced!

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 23/10/2025 15:46

Am I the only one who remembered little leaks that of course Charles wouldn’t protect Andrew like their mother had, would come down hard on him when king etc? Now it’s “when William is King”. Does seem to be a way of not doing anything and not having the PofW (whichever one it is!) actually come out and say abusing trafficked teens isn’t ok.

William has just done an interview. Didn’t touch on it. His people have leaked, he’s not put out a statement. It’s all very “business as usual” isn’t it? Pretending it’s only the monarch who could possibly say or do anything.

Apparently she died with 8 million in debt. All that quaffing champagne etc…

Edited

Not what it said when I googled her. Of course she could have 8 million in debts and 80 million in assets. Who knows.

Nope. I remember also how it was all going to be different.

Admittedly, he has cancer, but if he can travel to The Vatican for official duties he can sign a Letters Patent, have a five minute call to Keir Starmer about legislation (although not his business), and put out a proper statement about his brother.

All of which would take less than an hour of his time.

But no, nothing to see here, and a statement only about how the focus should be on him. 🙄🙄🙄

TheignT · 23/10/2025 16:51

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/10/2025 19:19

Who’s funding Andrew? And what are they getting in return? It must be something - you don’t chuck a quarter of a million a year at a cosseted, reputationally-damaged non-entity for no reason

Looking at his areas of interest I'd say that's likely to be Gulf Arabs, Libyans and the Chinese, @Dolphinnoises

As for what they're getting out of it: Knighthoods - honorary or otherwise - and other awards perhaps?

If Charles, via Fawcett, could flog them I see no reason Andrew wouldn't want a piece of that pie too, and I can't see Charles refusing if he needs to keep his brother silent

Not sure about Libya, isnt it a bit of a basket case since they got rid of Gadaffi. Not sure how to spell his name.

Yes it said some of what she spent money on was art works and jewellery. Not cash but not without value.
