Andrew, Sarah & a Royal Lodge question

Following some of the news stories about Andrew relinquishing Titles & a more local news story saying that he & his ex wife will continue to live in the Royal Lodge makes me wonder how that can be funded. Can they be made to leave if they can't pay?

It has 7 - or 12? - bedrooms so I expect it requires a bit of mopping & dusting each week - so do A & S also employ staff to maintain the property.

Not sure how old they both are either, maybe close to retirement?? but how do they fund a lifestyle without being propped up by the RF. Which prob won't please William too.
Just my tuppence worth question wondering how non working ex Royals with no marketable skills will pay staff wages & buy groceries.

So who pays for the staff?

jumpingthehighjump · 22/10/2025 07:34

I'd like to know that too!

Andrew better hope Charles lives a long time (sorry to be morbid) as William has zero time for him and would have him out on the street in no time.

William and Kate have moved recently and are living without staff and Charles has refused to move to Buckingham Palace. Big changes are coming to the Royal Estates as they have far too many houses for the number of working royals that William wants.

This post is so interesting as it shows that Williams team are finally getting some of their messaging right. William and Kate are not going to be without staff, it’s just the staff won’t live in the house, they are going to live in cottages nearby and come in to work. There’s no evidence from anything William has said or done that he’s got zero time for Andrew- it was William who was happy to share cars with Andrew at events after Andrew’s disgrace. Yet there’s this view that William has zero time for him.

Both William and Charles have socialised with Andrew after the history of his behaviour has been known. William has no history of refusing to attend things Andrew is at or refusing to talk to him at family events.

If William does deal with Andrew, it will be because he has to, no evidence at all that he’s been itching to cut him out.

Fluffyholeysocks · 22/10/2025 09:53

I suspect it will be the maintenance element of the agreement that will be his undoing. I seem to recall reading somewhere that he has to have the exterior painted every few years - i can't imagine Andrew up a ladder with a can of paint.

How do you know that William has no history of refusing to attend things Andrew is at or refusing to talk to him at family events? That’s quite a claim, I’m not sure how you could possibly know that. It’s not like Andrew is at every event that William attends, after all. He doesn’t get invited to the Carols for example - how does that square with your premise that the RF (including William) are hoping Andrew can be rehabilitated?

Regarding there being no evidence that William wants to get rid of him, it’s widely reported that William was the driving force behind the recent decision about the titles. So there’s that.

Interesting what people find interesting - I think the idea that occupants of the same car necessarily condone each others’ behaviour is quite an interesting one.

bluegreygreen · 22/10/2025 13:52

There was widespread criticism of William for not appearing with the Royal Family (including Andrew) at Easter - it turned out he had attended church elsewhere.
I have no idea if William did this to avoid Andrew, though it is possible.

I also have no idea how anyone would know whether William speaks to his uncle at family events, or whether he was happy at being in the same car.

Purplebunnie · 22/10/2025 14:10

I've just seen a clip from the recent funeral on BBC lunch time news today (article re effect Andrew is having on RF family in conjunction with Charles visit to Vatican) and it looks to me as if William is deliberately looking away from Andrew, he's almost turned his back and I may be imaging it but Catherine is looking intently at William as if understanding his discomfort - don't know how else to explain the look.

And then there is the non-attendance of church with the RF at Easter where Andrew was in attendance.

So there may be two instances where William is doing his best to distance himself but I may just be imagining it

Edited as again I didn't make sense

Somebody asked about where Andrew's income is from.
I think he possibly has a small pension from the time he was in the Navy.
Plus there may be some inheritence that we do not know about, maybe the Q. Mother, or Late Queen.
The Royal Lodge does itself not have an income (ie the house is on the Windsor estate, so no specific land attached to Royal Lodge itself).
If he was wise, he may have invested some of previous money wisely? I do not know of any other income he may have.
As regards Sarah, she SHOULD have relinquished her Duchess Title on their divorce, and I think less of her for not doing so. She has written some books (which would have given some income). She also may have inherited some wealth from her own family. (Though she had to borrow from Epstein, so obviously if she did, she would have spent it).
There seemes to be confusion as to whether Royal Lodge has 30 rooms or 30 bedrooms, but according to Wikepedia it has 30 rooms with 7 bedrooms. Apparantly he has an almost watertight lease, in that he is obliged to pay a 'peppercorn' rent, in return for maintenance of the property. I think Charles was trying to get him out on the basis of the maintenance, but somehow money seems to have been found for this.
I personally dislike this trial by media. There is no evidence he has committed a crime. Though I am inclined to believe he did have sex with Ms Guiffre, that does not mean he knew she was trafficked. Though certainly a moral crime.
It was under Tony Blair, I think, that he became some sort of trade envoy. I never understood why. Seemed very odd to me, as he would not have had any experience of this at all.

CrimsonStoat · 22/10/2025 14:34

This is Royal Lodge, a sizeable mansion. It won't have 30 bedrooms.

But I wonder what constitutes a room?Does it include what would be or have been staff areas?

Plus, going by pics of the interior one of the main reception rooms is huge.

To repeat my post again
Because those that seem to think it is a fairly unremarkable abode are totally wrong

Having seen drone footage of Royal Lodge it certainly isn't a modest dwelling! It is not a Palace, but it is a Royal Estate, it looks enormous! A photo in the article

The Grade II-listed Georgian mansion is laid out across three storeys with two-storey wings, and features a “formal room” and a spacious drawing room with intricate mouldings and millwork, high ceilings and large, arched windows opening out on to the rear terrace.
There is a conservatory and a saloon, reportedly measuring about 15 metres by 9 metres (48ft by 30ft), and seven bedrooms. In fact, the residence is so large that both Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie were able to host their wedding receptions at home.

He has a butler, housekeeper, and cook
There is a chapel lodge, 6 cottages, a gardener's cottage, accommodation for security, a swimming pool, a golf driving range, and tennis courts. Modest it is not!
Why should he live like this? Surely surely he can move into somewhere smaller.

Never mind the size, it’s hideous.
Imagine being royal and having so many incredible buildings available and choosing that.

Navigatinglife100 · 22/10/2025 14:44

He lost his parents in recent years. They were both loaded. Also, AFAIK, the estate of the Queens doesnt pay IHT. Im talking of her personal wealth, not the Crowns.

So, as one of her 4 children, Id imagine he is now rolling in it - even if he wasnt before.

The questions about his wealth are now largely irrelevant I would think.

ThePoshUns · 22/10/2025 14:46

I am listening to Entitled on audiobook.
So the Budgie the helicopter books that SF wrote were supposed to have been published for all money to go to charity. Only 10% actually went to charity, she pocketed the rest. She is appalling.

jumpingthehighjump · 22/10/2025 14:46

Only avoidance of IHT is from dead monarch to heir

Lordofmyflies · 22/10/2025 14:52

There was a tv programme on recently about Andrew's income . He gets £20K a year Naval Pension, inheritance from Queen and Queen Mother, personal investments in China and Middle East and his Pitch@Palace 'charity'. On top, money from property sales and 'personal income streams'

I can’t imagine they made much.
Who on here has ever bought one, eagerly awaited the next one, had a small child whose favourite character was Budgie and clamoured to dress up as her for World Book Day?
I read an article the other day which commented the Epstein email would affect her career as a children’s writer. I mean, seriously?!

ThePoshUns · 22/10/2025 15:15

Yes I’d she hadn’t been a duchess they would never have been punished at all!

SloughResident · 22/10/2025 15:17

Poor Budgie. Punished because SF was a duchess. Smile

SloughResident · 22/10/2025 15:20

Unrelated, but the Keira Knightly book looks nice. Not seen it other than looked it up online (thinking 'bet it's crap' and finding it looked very pretty).

Baital · 22/10/2025 15:44

I don't think anyone has said Royal Lodge is an ordinary house. Posters have pointed out that it doesn't have 30 bedrooms, as others have claimed.

Yes it's enormous, and far larger than any couple needs.

Saveusename · 22/10/2025 15:56

I loved Budgie. They used to have a Budgie ride in British Home Stores cafe when there were still smoking and non-smoking sections.
