Trump State Visit

A space for thoughts.

My first is that being at Windsor might make it easier to host a foreign leader. Which then begs the question as to whether in the modern age we really need Buckingham Palace. None of the royals like living there and I bet you'd make a fortune hiring it out for events and tourists.

Whilst i find Catherine's coat dresses a little boring it makes sense to have a sort of uniform.

I’ve never seen this level of pageantry for other world leaders, let alone twice. It’s puzzling

Unfortunately, we need America onside more than ever for trade deals because of Brexit. And fortunately, this President is attracted by a shiny bauble wrapped in a military parade.

elprup · 17/09/2025 21:48

I don’t think the royal family look ill - maybe a little stressed but who wouldn’t be with The Donald in the vicinity!

DontReinMeIn · 17/09/2025 21:49

I find this incredibly embarrassing but a staggering summing up of our ruling class.

Rolling over backwards for the wealthy - Trump and the royals, while people in this country suffer. Disgusting. Absolutely disgusting.

I dip into the royal threads from time to time but never post on them. As I have got older I have really come to respect the 'soft power' that maintaining the Royal Family affords us. I studied politics, continue to be interested and work in an area where social policy and international relations is important. I would never consider myself a royalist but increasingly respect the role key members play and the late queen and the king certainly seem very adept at side-stepping contentious issue and being incredibly diplomatic when necessary.

I feel the same. I'm still a (small r!) republican at heart, as I wouldn't ever design a system based on hereditary power and privilege, but I can see the value that we get from the RF and the type of diplomacy that they can bring.

Dabralor · 17/09/2025 21:55

So many elephants in this room, squashed among the gigantic table displays and bitten tongues.

I miss the Queen - she was unsurpassed at that role. I am also a raging republican in theory - but people seem to need this type of figure head. Otherwise you get political leaders filling that iconic gap.

Does the first lady ever take her hat off

Poor Kate has to sit next to Trump

This state visit is what's known as "earning your keep" 😅

Apparently Melania had been planning her outfit for months but it looks like she lost the original belt and had to grab one off a different outfit at the last minute. Her fashion choices are usually elegant, if unexciting, but this one is a miss imo.

I really don't like Melania's dress here, just not suitable for the occasion.

Love Catherine's dress, the colour is gorgeous on her, and it's very fashion now. Quite like her hair being down for a change, but I would have liked to have seen her in a different tiara. I think the Vladimir tiara with emeralds would have been stunning with the gold of the dress.

Free the tiaras.

IcedPurple · 17/09/2025 22:00

No sign of Ivanka. Is it true that she and her father have fallen out? You would think she'd love the excuse to wear an expensive gown and hang out with royalty. She did attend the first state visit.

Well, yes. If you consider that we could have an elected head of state like Trump or a hereditary head of state like Charles, then it's a bit of a no brainer. I mean, we could end up with a President Farage or similar. I'll stick with Charles and Camilla tbh.

I listen to 5live and I cannot remember which show it was today or who they were talking g to, but apparently Stamer originally offered the invitation for the state visit to Trump in private before but he wanted it the next day as a huge public display. As much as this makes my skin crawl, and I would just want to tell him where to go, it just highlights my point above. Like it or not, Trump is currently the most powerful man in the world but he is vain and thinks he is a good friend to our royal family. I would not be surprised if Charles and Camilla go home afterwards, liberally apply hand sterilizer and break out the gin and fags and bitch about a shit day at work.

The State Visit will have been thrashed out between both governments for weeks before any formal invitations were issued, so Trump will have been well aware of it in advance. It was obvious when Starmer went through that little game of giving him the invite from the King that Trump wasn't at all surprised. He definitely wouldn't win an Oscar for his acting!

I think Kate looks stunning, it’s an absolutely perfect dress for the type of event, it’s modest, elegant and regal, she outshines everyone there.

I think she looks beautiful and incredibly regal, it’s a very “historical” type of dress, she could be at court in a Tudor times, I am fed up of that same old tiara though!

bluegreygreen · 17/09/2025 22:20

I assume everyone complaining of the reception for Trump was asleep or out of thr country for the recent state visit of the French president.

BigWillyLittleTodger · 17/09/2025 22:21

@MrsFinkelstein We need to start a campaign! 👑

sittingonabeach · 17/09/2025 22:27

They had to do something different for this State visit, partly because of Buckingham Palace being renovated and also due to security concerns. So everything was done within the walls of Windsor Castle.

Thedom · 17/09/2025 22:35

Trump got a few digs in, ‘you raised a wonderful son, Prince William’ and I think he also said something to the effect of ‘Charles has done so much for veterans like no one else.’

It’s obvious who he was alluding to, not the place at all, he never forgives a slight against him, Charles must have cringed.

Lol, I didn't pick up on any of that! Do you really think it was a deliberate dig at Harry? Just sounded like typical Trump to me!

Maybe not, its what I thought he was alluding to though, and Trump,is such a dickhead it wouldn’t surprise me,.

Nothing would surprise me about Donald Trump.

404PageNotFound · 17/09/2025 22:59

Just caught up with the news. Did anyone else notice when Trump thanked the queen at the banquet he looked at Kate instead of Camilla?

MrsLeonFarrell · 17/09/2025 23:15

State visits have pretty standard elements. This one is very similar to the one for Macron recently. They have turned up the spectacle a bit but they need to for Trump. He isn't the worst person the royals have been told to host.

Absolutely loved watching the pomp and ceremony of it all. I don’t think any other country does this sort of thing as well as we do. Loved the long beautifully dressed dining table, although they seemed to be packed in close a bit. It does look as though Charles genuinely likes Trump - lots of smiles and chat between them. Not sure what Camilla and Melania would have in common though….
