Since there is a flurry of discussion on another thread its probably best to create a thread for it to take place here and not derail another one.

So William is not attending a number of important events the recent one being the VJ day..lots of you think he should have after all he is the future King and if he can't make time for these things then it begs the question what is the point of them?

So discuss away...what should he turning up to, what is his actual role if he starts to not do these types of things...

He’s lazy. Simple As. Kate too, imo.

I agree with this and it isn’t about what they’ve been doing since Kate’s diagnosis, it’s always been true. They l have always done very few appointments and often do them together which in effect means they do even less. I can’t stand the argument that they are raising a family - aren’t we all? They do so little that they are barely part-time.

YourBrickTiger · 20/08/2025 10:06

God they must be exhausted. I'm afraid I'm not that sympathetic with the cancer diagnosis for Charles and Kate as they have access to top treatment straight away, and would have regardless if they have private healthcare, it wouldn't matter considering their status. There people progressing through the stages who cannot get help and are having operations cancelled. It's simply wrong that people are treated so differently because of an outdated institution.

Until he is King, he is a working royal.

You don't own William or Kate he is not King. Leave my William alone.

hangerup · 20/08/2025 10:07

You don't make the rules, you're just an anon with an opinion.

As is every MNs poster.

Quite. Her cancer was detected during an entirely unrelated procedure. How many of us get access to preventative care in this manner?

These threads are hilarious, some posters are so odd, they truly walk among us!

I never mentioned anyone being lazy.

My point is, that if you or I underwent cancer treatment and were in remission, we would be expected to not be working at all, or to be back at work. Not picking and choosing what work we do - it is undeniable that the engagements they choose to attend line up very closely with their interests, such as the tennis and football. Being patrons of those sports and their associated associations is irrelevant when they don’t turn up to things like memorial services.

What on earth are you on about? Plenty of employers would let you come back into work part time, or let you stay on lighter duties. Get out of your fantasy world!

IAmATorturedPoet · 20/08/2025 10:09

The RF are hosting a reception at Windsor Castle in the autumn to honour VJ veterans. I would expect William will be in attendance for that.

William did say not long ago that he wanted to carry out his duties with 'a smaller r in royal'... an intention to downsize. Or maybe he has a subconscious desire for a larger r in republican ... I don't get the impression he relishes passing on the baton to George.

If smaller royalty (hooray! All for it.) then smaller benefits. Less wealth and less access to public coffers. They're already leeches so if they're going to do less, less pay.

'Being King and Queen for the rest of their lives' is not onerous and has hardly any responsibility and none of any consequence, apart from to b themselves and their own continuation. They are figureheads. They have to shake hands and make small talk a few times a year with dignitaries they may not like. The fact that a 96 year old woman riddled with cancer could do it shows its not hard work. William didn't have cancer. His wife did, she had been in remission for a year. She is surrounded by servants. His father still has cancer yet he couldn't be bothered to step up to help him out or turn up for a morning to church.

Another one who has never had cancer. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone .
This discussion is becoming very unpleasant and making me extremely emotional.

MrsFinkelstein · 20/08/2025 10:10

Charles was at VJ as Head of State and as Commander in Chief.

The RF was represented by him.

Charles didn't attend every event with his Mother, there was no need for William to be there too. Seems a pointless moan.

A year on?

There’s lighter duties and there’s 7 engagements in as many months. I don’t think anyone’s employer is letting them work one day a month!

That's if they are not on strike or have to cancel because of staff shortages 😭

It’s just awful. Absolutely awful. I truly do not understand the idolisation of these people. They lucked into being born/marrying into the family and they’re now treated like gods.

One of my parents had cancer, one of my in-laws had it twice. My MIL is very disappointed in William, she was a big Royalist.

Having worked through cancer treatment (for stage 3 cancer) and being back at work (as a public servant, as in theory the royals are) I have zero sympathy for them needing more time (other than Charles with active cancer at his age) this long after treatment finished.

Can you imagine over a year down the line still expecting an employer to allow time off on full pay? Get to work or get sacked, would be the attitude.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 20/08/2025 10:12

To not go to any of the VJ events was a mistake. He keeps making mistakes like this, not showing up to things that really as the future King he would be assumed to attend. (Even more so given Charles’ health issues, they should be preparing William to look like an easy step into the role).

Even if William doesn’t care, someone in his team should have had the date flagged, held it for this and strongly encouraged him to do something that day. You’ve got to wonder about the quality of his staff that this was allowed to happen.

Abra1t · 20/08/2025 10:13

I’d be really careful about making claims about recovery from cancer treatment.

Patients might be incontinent, anaemic, suffering from bone pain, nauseous. I know people in ‘remission’ who are all these things and it can be hideous when they’re out in public and worry they’ll lose control of bowels because of the treatment they’ve had or the damage done by the disease. Or suddenly need a chair because legs are collapsing. Or that they might throw up without warning. But they’re not being treated and no active cancer has been detected at their last check-up.

(Note—nobody here knows what cancer the princess had or the treatment. Just making a general point.)

Isn't that how it works though? People have to idolise them, believe they are worthy & better than them. Otherwise you don't care & if you don't care they are pointless.

Yes, if any of us were in their position we would not be on full pay, unless we got VERY lucky with a company with a very generous sick pay package.

Again. He didnt have cancer. His wife did. His fathercstill has. One morning once in a while to turn up to commemorative events that will never happen again with living survivors of WWII does not change anything regarding cancer treatment. Kate has round the clock servants, nannies, medical staff on call. She does not need William sitting there all day too. He has a role which he's not fulfilling. But that's his lookout really if he doesn't care if he looks bone idle. The only people who lose if he makes the Monarchy irrelevant are him and his family, so let him crack on I suppose.

hangerup · 20/08/2025 10:14

@Abra1t When you put it like that and add in Charles age I wouldn't have a problem with him stepping back.

That's why the RF live so long they have on tap care and regular check ups with their doctor. Unlike us we have to either see a nurse or a doctor's assistant before we ever see a doctor. It's all very depressing the reality.

It all stems from the “god given right” that they believed they had to be king, 500+ years ago. It just so happens that it’s distilled down into whatever the hell this mess is today. I do truly believe that the 90s and early 00s did damage, they peaked around 2012-2018 when William and Harry got married, and it’s all gone to their heads.
