Thank you for replying re Mountbatten and Kincora @TheAutumnCrow
Why wasn’t it picked up by the mainstream media ?
If Prince Phillip knew, surely he wouldn’t allow his 3 sons around Dickie ?

Mountbatten being a paedophile doesn't mean he abused every boy he encountered. He was ashamed of his attraction to young boys so Philip may not even have known about his paedophilia.

I don’t think Lownie comes across very well at all for a respected journalist, it’s all very tabloid.

He’s not a journalist though.

Who comes across as a tabloid journalist.

MaxandMeg · 17/08/2025 20:25

Agreed, Though I think the venality and crass entitlement of the Yorks would bring out the inner tabloid journalist in the most staid of historians. Theirs is a tabloid story really. It’s quite difficult to be detached and judicious about such aberrant goings on.

Didn’t Diana’s own mother testify against her?

Diana's maternal grandmother Lady Fermoy testified against her own daughter Frances Spencer during the divorce from Di's father.

CathyorClaire · 17/08/2025 21:22

If Wiliiam is the moral person he seems to be, and prepared to make very difficult decisions, he might be the person to clean it up. Otherwise, I think we are veering once again to the point of its demise.

There is nothing to indicate this is W's intention. If anything he seems inclined towards more secrecy while being determined to ascend his 'birthright'.

While I'd have preferred to have seen a dignified retreat into obscurity afte E2, I very much hope and expect he's our last 'king'

CathyorClaire · 18/08/2025 11:50

Watched the doc and thought AL came across quite well.

Definitely not the rabid revenge-hound I was half expecting.

😂’Rabid revenge hound’
Sorry if you were disappointed😂

Luddite26 · 18/08/2025 13:58

I came on to say this. But thankyou @MaxandMeg You've done a better job of it
I've listened to a few interviews now and AL imo comes across well. He knows even more than he has been able to put in the book. I can understand why he's coming across like he seemingly is he's incredulous with it all.
Up until now I have always thought Andrew was the fall guy for all the other Epstein perverts but reality is he's as bad as Epstein. And SF knew everything. The money she has gone through.and taken from charities. Yet people will still shrug and think well they were fun etc. and AL is being salacious. no they are leeches and their behaviour could make us lose our monarchy.
One of the revelations which has stuck in my throat was the 40 ladies in 4 days in Thailand he was provided with while representing GB. Were they underage? It's one massive cover-up.

Sorry kids wiped the quote off somehow.
I came in to say this^^.

Just on this point, I don't think anyone on MN has ever referred to Andrews activities as ‘fun’ have they?😳

I can be disgusted by Andrew’s activities (and his wife’s) but I can also be disappointed and have lost some respect for the author.

bluegreygreen · 18/08/2025 14:56

I still think so.

It doesn't mean I'm defending his egregious behaviour. I just think that while we're looking at him, we're not looking at others who are more clever and powerful.

Think about it. How many powerful men have been involved in these circles? Yet who are we talking about? Epstein (now dead), and Andrew - an easy target, and apparently described throughout this book as 'not very bright'.

I agree about the 40 women in Thailand but that’s what makes me uneasy about the author’s approach. This allegation needs full investigation, naming names and stating the full facts - especially with regard to the ages of the women involved. There’s too much flippancy for me to- it comes over as “Ooh - can’t resist putting in this tidbit- it’s so juicy - but haven’t got time to give it the weight it deserves “.

I assure you that I’m a terrible puritan and have always disapproved of Andrew and Fergie’s blatant entitlement, long before I even knew about the more disgusting, illegal and damaging aspects of their conduct.

”Fun” never cut it with me!

Meanwhile, no complaining or explaining from BP. The unkind part of me is saying the institution deserves this mess. QEII and lots of others knew but did nothing.

Reddog1 · 18/08/2025 18:28

Yes QE2 allegedly was told about the rape of teenagers (as well as the financial irregularities) but chose to ignore it all. It’s disgraceful if true. Unless her hands were somehow tied, or she was given a heavily sanitised version that didn’t cover the women’s’ ages or trafficked statuses. I’m trying to be impartial about her involvement and not let my natural disdain for royalty come through at the expense of the facts . Maybe more details will come out next year in the paperback and the picture about who knew what will become clearer.

Wendy Berry, a royal housekeeper, not a fan of Sarah. Sarah quite entitled towards staff.

Didn't Wendy Berry write a (repressed? certainly hard to get hold of now) book about C&D ?

Perhaps QE2 was like a mafioso mother: incapable of believing her precious boy was capable of the rape of teenaged girls. Or like Queen Victoria with lesbianism, not believing it happened. Or perhaps not. What a rotten institution, with some apples more rotten than others.

I’ve got the book. It makes an interesting read.

There is a very thorough review of the Housekeeper s Diary on
The Vintage Read Show
A YouTube channel by shauna kay an Australian that is very nteresting esp on royal and historical matters.
She has also interviewed Andrew Lownie on this and previous books.

jumpingthehighjump · 18/08/2025 21:15

I've just got the Lownie book... finding time to read it is tricky but will go for it!

BemusedAmerican · 19/08/2025 00:39

Take breaks. The non-stop grifting will wear you down psychologically.

Weepixie · 19/08/2025 02:55

After reading the excerpt about Andrew which was nothing more than the abuse of a child served up as a source of titillation and gossip for the masses in order to increase sales of the book, I’m disappointed so many people have still had a stomach for it.

I’ve spent the last few weeks trying to find out by various means if an investigation into the claims could trigger an investigation of historical crime, how would a person go about doing it? And hopefully now the book’s been published there’s enough information for an investigation to start. Granted those involved may be long dead but people could and should be named even from the grave.

I previously asked posters to think of the 11 year old children they may have in their life and how they would feel if their son or grandson for eg had been sexually abused, yet alone if their abuse had been made known to the world for people to ooh and aah about over their cornflakes. Because that’s what this is - further exploitation and abuse of a child.

Every victim of sexual abuse deserves to be treated with the utmost respect and sensitivity, they are also entitled to privacy and this should never not be the case just because in this instance it’s Andrew in the midst of it all.
