You are not wrong @wordler. I remember my late DH coming to bed late and saying that there had been a car crash in Paris and Dodi and Diana were dead. Got up, watched news, nothing on her status and me saying "well it sounds like she's just injured but she's alright" and DH saying "It's what they're not saying, they're not saying she's OK". (He like my now DH had been a journalist)
Got a few hours sleep and woke up to the radio coming on with the news. I was her age more or less and think that made a difference. I'm not ashamed of sobbing into a tea towel that afternoon when the Radio 4 announcer introduced the Elgar cello concerto played by Jacqueline du Pre with "another woman who died too young" and then breaking down.
That week following was the strangest and most febrile (in a public sense) I've ever experienced or want to again.
