If Kate got divorced how much would she get?

Just musing on this in light of Charles’ place on the rich list with a personal fortune of £640 million.

I dont know William’s personal wealth and if Kate has any individual wealth.

Was there a pre-nup and would it be legal?

How much would she get? Any homes? Jewellery? (Diana’s ring?)

I imagine William would keep residence of the children with her allowed visits?

What would her title be? Would she keep her HRH, or become another Catherine, Princess of Wales?

If they divorced after William’s coronation she’d surely get much more but not half of £640 million?

What would her title become then, no longer Queen? Eventually King Mother?

What if either remarried?

William could have another 3 children with a new Queen.

So many possibilities!

A lot of questions about something that’s very unlikely to happen!

Kibble29 · 19/05/2025 19:40

People need to relax. Why are you getting so upset about a hypothetical musing?

As if two people who could not give a single fuck about any one of us getting divorced is so utterly terrible to think about. Whilst you might not sleep at the prospect, the world would not stop turning.

I mean, its hardly as if divorce in the Royal family is unheard of. If Diana and Fergie's experiences are anything to go by, she'd not get much (relatively) and she'd have to give up her HRH.
I agree though they won't divorce. There is too much at stake. Even if they secretly hate each other ( which I doubt) they would be enabled to live separate lives.
She wouldn't be King Mother because I don't think its a title. I think Queen Mother is 'Queen who is the mother of the Queen/King'. So if she had never been Queen, she couldn't be Queen Mother. I think this discussion was had about Diana, although sadly obviously she never made it.

I think William would instigate the divorce. She seems much more into him. He seems unbothered either way.

Oh, rubbish - have you seen the way he looks at her??

Flyswats · 19/05/2025 19:53

I just googled Diana's settlement and got this:

"In the 1996 divorce from Prince Charles, Princess Diana received a lump sum payment of £17 million plus an annual stipend of £400,000. A financial adviser reportedly said that Diana received "every penny" that Charles had available."

So in today's money that would be nearly 41 million pounds up front and about 960K per year on top.

So I'd just assume similar.

AcrossthePond55 · 19/05/2025 20:13

OK. I'll play the game.

I don't think they'd divorce. They're older and more mature than either Charles or Diana were when they split. And I don't think that William has a Camilla 'waiting in the wings'.

I can see them agreeing to live separate and discreet lives and hammering out some sort of 'entente cordiale' between themselves. God knows it'd be easy enough with the properties and money available to them. Charles and Di could easily have done that too, if they'd not become spiteful with each other.

But if it should come to divorce, I think Catherine would come out of it much better off financially than Diana did. She's not naive and her parents & family aren't part of 'The Establishment' like the Spencers were. They'd be behind her all the way if she needed them.

As far as 'King Mother', from what I understand the title 'Queen Mother' was established for the 'elder' Queen Elizabeth (who would technically have been 'Queen Dowager' Elizabeth) to differentiate her from her daughter Queen Elizabeth II. Catherine would need no such differentiation.

Flyswats · 19/05/2025 20:38

@AcrossthePond55 You do realize that Diana's pay out was the biggest ever in UK history, at the time?

Puffykins · 19/05/2025 20:50

1.) I don't think they will ever get divorced and hope they don't as they are evidently really happy together.

2.) to answer your question about jewellery, a lot of the really good stuff is owned by the Crown, not individuals. The same goes for land and houses - so it's not that it can be split - it belongs to the King/ the Queen/ the Duchy of Cornwall etc., not Charles/ William. So she'd get a settlement not half.

3.) She'd get protected accommodation in Royal Palaces/ on a Royal estate (like Diana got an apartment in KP and Fergie still lives on the Windsor Estate) and custody would be spit like in any divorce arrangement.

zenas · 19/05/2025 21:21

It would only happen in eleven years time, when the youngest is 18. That's not too long..... They'd stay together for the sake of the kids, against the constant advice not to do that given on MN 😊

ArtemisiaTheArtist · 19/05/2025 21:41

i’m a cynical old hag and think they’ve had plenty of times where they might have split up or ended up at Relate. But, yeah, Kate has too much to lose now. Another few years and she’ll be Queen. She’ll do anything to keep her status.

Who cares!

This.

Shuttered · 19/05/2025 16:07

That’s slightly mean. I’d go with £10.57 and a tiara sawed in half.

🤣

Gosh that is an obscene amount of money, I don't think I could even spend that! Oh to be royalty! 🤑

Yes I'd be happy with £1mill! Ecstatic even. I'm not greedy.

Right, where are these millionaires...

Tbrh · 20/05/2025 00:52

@CalicoPusscat I'd be happy with 20mil 😆

I think they would do everything to avoid a divorce, for the sake of their children. When there's so much money around, it's far easier to live separate lives without it being obvious.

Yes this. Like the Trumps.

It's really really easy for rich people to stay married but live separate lives, avoid each other if they really feel the need to and come together for business and family events. It's really not difficult.

BustingBaoBun · 20/05/2025 07:26

No way will they divorce even if they can't stand each other. They have enough houses to avoid each other, along with access to helicopters and limos to dodge each other and give opportunities to see others. None of us would be any the wiser. Smile sweetly at public appearances, and if that gets tricky put out one of those sugary videos clasping each other and looking adoringly in each others eyes whilst the sun filters through the trees.
(This is not me saying they have put out those videos because they are not getting on but they have gone down the route of this social media footage and they do seem to like doing them)

It won't happen because it will be a bigger scandal than Charles and Di. Who knows about their marriage. Who remembers joint engagements with Charles and Di looking pissed off and unhappy and they couldn't even bear to look at each other! They are certainly not like that, so probably all is rosy.

A terrible accident probably.

This.

LBFseBrom · 20/05/2025 07:48

I cannot see it happening, frankly, but she would be extremely rich, no doubt about that.

LindorDoubleChoc · 20/05/2025 07:53

What a weird thing to spend time thinking / posting about.

Serenster · 20/05/2025 08:00

William could have another 3 children with a new Queen.

Indeed he could, but any new children would be behind his existing three children in the line of succession, so limited relevance. And if George and Kate outlived William, Kate would always have a high status as the mother of the heir/king. Diana had that status too, before her untimely death.

ARichtGoodDram · 20/05/2025 08:06

As far as 'King Mother', from what I understand the title 'Queen Mother' was established for the 'elder' Queen Elizabeth (who would technically have been 'Queen Dowager' Elizabeth) to differentiate her from her daughter Queen Elizabeth II. Catherine would need no such differentiation.

Queen Mary and Queen Alexandra, among others were also the Queen Mother, but never used it as there was no need for differentiation. It wasn't established for QEQM though, it's a long established title.

It was only really needed for the media and public as in any court papers or anything official QEQM was HM Queen Elizabeth and QEII was HM The Queen.

PorgyandBess · 20/05/2025 08:10

She’s be the same as Diana and Fergie. Big pay off, no HRH. Personal jewellery would be kept, not crown owned stuff. Not sure if that’d apply to the engagement ring. I think it’s hideous, I’d be glad to hand it back 😆

NewAgeNewMe · 20/05/2025 08:15

To quote the fictional old Lady Grantham:

when a couple is unhappily married] “Well, in those moments, a couple is ‘unable to see as much of each other as they would like.”

Edit: can’t see it myself or for the Sussexes tbh.

Serenster · 20/05/2025 08:17

Not sure if that’d apply to the engagement ring. I think it’s hideous, I’d be glad to hand it back

That’s surely destined for George to use in future (given Kate’s already obtained a less cumbersome alternative eternity-style sapphire ring to wear). Although maybe by then the public fascination with Diana will have faded and the ring can be consigned to the vault….
