Apparently William and Catherine are called Lord and Lady of the Isles in Mull. What a beautiful title Lady of the Isles is, much nicer than Princess of Wales.

Anyway I thought I'd start a thread musing on titles in general, they don't have to be royal.

My favourite title Lady of the Isles (as of today)

Least favourite Princess of Bourbon Two Sicilies (what a mouthful)

I've just had a google and found that Charles has the title Charles The Helper of the Cows , bestowed upon him by the Maasai.

MissWishaw · 29/04/2025 21:36

I can't think of any that amuse me but your suggestions both made me giggle 😄

Weepixie · 29/04/2025 21:41

I love that title but didn’t know about it until this thread. Thank you.

CheeseWisely · 29/04/2025 21:46

Not especially funny but here in the Channel Islands Charles is His Majesty The King, Our Duke. The Queen was also Our Duke (rather than Duchess) as it relates to succession of the Duke Of Normandy.

I've always thought that being Prince of Denmark and Greece was a bit bonkers.

Not2identifying · 29/04/2025 22:29

The thing that I always think about titles is the ones given to ordinary people. Men are knighted and become 'sir'. Women get 'Dame' or 'Baroness'. Neither of those appeal to me. I'd be happy to be 'Lady' but I don't think I could get that title in my own right unless I was the daughter of a Duke (spoiler alert, I'm not).

I'm sure I could have motivated myself to do something noteworthy in society if I had known my reward was going to be better than 'Dame' or 'Baroness'.

Why bonkers?

P.S. I really like Lady of the Isles too.

Harry and Meghan's secondary titles are Dumbarton and Kilkeel. Nothing against either place but I wouldn't want either of these titles.

Why not? Baron and Baroness Kilkeel sound lovely.

Sir Ian Moncrieff of That Ilk.

MaisieMacabe · 29/04/2025 22:35

The Bourbon Two Sicilies is a great one.

The 'kill' sound.

The 'kill' sound.

Quite common in Ireland and Scotland. Many Irish surnames start with the "Kil" prefix.

BigWillyLittleTodger · 29/04/2025 22:43

I love the title Countess! It sounds so glamorous to me, like something from a bygone era, Duchess is awful frumpy and dull, I would much prefer to be called Countess of Wessex rather than Duchess of Edinburgh, (I know it’s a higher rank) and as for Dowager Duchess…….

MaisieMacabe · 29/04/2025 22:46

Marchioness? Emma Weymouth is now Marchioness of Bath.

Seagullsandsausagerolls · 29/04/2025 22:52

Kilkeel is a thriving fishing village near me. One of my all time favorite memories is sitting at the side of the harbour in our car during a massive thunderstorm eating fresh fish and chips.

Kil means Church.

What a great memory! I think it's a beautiful name.

MaisieMacabe · 29/04/2025 22:56

I also like Killearney and Killicove, they're very poetic names.

KatherineParr · 29/04/2025 22:57

I remember a BBC programme on Monaco where Princess Camilla introduced herself as:

"Her Royal Highness
Princess Camilla
Of Bourbon
Of the Two Sicilies
(That's two. Two Sicilies)
Duchess of Castro. "

She paused between each section the way I've written it out. It was great, especially the way she had to specify it was two Sicilies, not just the one.

MaisieMacabe · 29/04/2025 22:57

Prince Andrew is also Baron Killyleagh. Great title, the less said about it's holder, the better.

angelinawasrobbed · 29/04/2025 22:59

The Count of Tenh

(think he crops up in The Young Visiters by Daisy Ashford)

Baronesses are know as Lady day to day (Lady Thatcher etc) so you’ve got something to aim for 😁

What happened to the other Sicily though?!?

I like the Knight of Glin, I think the last one might be dead now, but his elder daughter has the castle and is married to that letch Damien Lewis.

BottleBlondeMachiavelli · 29/04/2025 23:08

What happened to the other Sicily…?

I looked that up once. It’s a swashbuckling tale of medieval (?? maybe slightly later) Italian shenanigans. I can’t remember the details, but if you need a rabbit hole to fall down for an hour, it’s an interesting one. Lots of interesting craziness in Italian history.

I think Lady of the Isles sounds like it could be a ferry! 😂 Bir like Maid of the Loch and so on!
