The royal family

Loveliest titles (and the worst)

Apparently William and Catherine are called Lord and Lady of the Isles in Mull. What a beautiful title Lady of the Isles is, much nicer than Princess of Wales.

Anyway I thought I'd start a thread musing on titles in general, they don't have to be royal.

My favourite title Lady of the Isles (as of today)

Least favourite Princess of Bourbon Two Sicilies (what a mouthful)

I know it as “Lady Muck fae
Stoorie Castle” usually prefaced by “who does she think she is”! (Stoorie is Scots for dusty).

Scots language is the best 👊

It is weird, they aren't even close to each other.

That's a long story.
The Greeks ousted King Otto back in the 19thC. They wanted to replace him with one of Victoria's sons, to get a bit of British Empire support, and control of the Ionian islands. Prince Alfred didn't take up the offer, but a relative, Prince William of Schleswig Holstein did, and became King George I of Greece.
That is why Prince Philip had German and Danish ancestry, but was Prince Philip of Greece. His house was Schleswig Holstein Sonderberg Glucksberg. Not Greek at all.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 30/04/2025 07:37

Earl of Sandwich was probably good to start with, but now I just think of, well, a sandwich. Maybe ham, maybe tuna...but a sandwich.

Is there a Lord Cupcake, I wonder?

And Lady Pot o'Tea?

Fascinating, thank you for typing all that out. I love the tangled webs Victoria's children wove.

No problem! That's the short version! Poor George got assassinated in the end.
I read that old Queen Mary approved of Philip marrying Elizabeth because she enjoyed the fact that "he's 9/10 German and 1/10 Danish, but is a prince of Greece"!

I think that's a marketing opportunity missed for the Earls of Sandwich.
Just think!

I have a fondness for the title given to Prince Philip in Papua New Guinea in the local language of Tok Pisin, “oldfella Pili-Pili him bilong Misis Kwin”. He had other more grand sounding titles but I bet he really enjoyed that one.

My favourite so far!!

Why bonkers?

Two countries quite far apart whose people are very different! I don't know it's always tickled me.

JADS · 30/04/2025 08:25

One of my very good friends went out with a Rt Hon chap - he was a complete wet blanket. To be fair to him though, at the time I worked in a shop and I only realised when he handed over his Coutt's card to pay. He kept it very quiet.

I agree with the person above who said Dame was a bit crap and Lady was nicer. I would accept Grande Dame however.

It is weird, they aren't even close to each other.

You do understand that the Greek royal family sprang from one of the younger sons of King Christian IX of Dennark, don't you? He became King George I of Greece, but he also handed down his Danish title to his descendants. He was assassinated in 1913, after a reign of 50 years. One of his grandsons was Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark (later HRH The Duke of Edinburgh).

Not only was Queen Victoria the Mother of Europe, but Christian IX was known as the Father-in-law of Europe. Which is how Prince Philip was not only a Prince of Greece and Denmark, but his father was a cousin of both Tsar Nicholas II of Russia and King George V of England.

He was way more royal than The Queen. On his maternal side, he was descended from Queen Victoria, and both his mother and grandmother were born at Windsor Castle, in Queen Vic's actual presence.
Which is why he was pissed off when courtiers used to patronise him as a "nobody" in the early days of his marriage!

No, married to Dominic West. Or was. And yes, the last one died without any sons, so, as it can’t be passed on to a daughter, the title has gone dormant.

Edited

Ah yes (sorry Damien L)

Still is married to him. It was noticeable they were selling the castle prior to his dalliance, but not after, so a proper old aristo deal there

Had it not been for some unfortunate incidents in the 1700s, my elder brother would have been the Master of Duchal. Not sure what that would have made me!

Possibly. Women don’t feature in the very sparse history! It’s quite fun though. And there is a small pile of moss covered stones where there was once the smallest ever castle….

The thing that I always think about titles is the ones given to ordinary people. Men are knighted and become 'sir'. Women get 'Dame' or 'Baroness'. Neither of those appeal to me. I'd be happy to be 'Lady' but I don't think I could get that title in my own right unless I was the daughter of a Duke (spoiler alert, I'm not).

I'm sure I could have motivated myself to do something noteworthy in society if I had known my reward was going to be better than 'Dame' or 'Baroness'.

You can buy titles.

Sometimes a title comes with a property.

Has anyone watched 'The Change'? I'd quite like to be Queen of the Eels.

I also like Grand Duke / Duchess, the Russians used them but I think there is only Luxemburg that still uses it.
