Would anyone like to join me in my attempt to unite the board and discuss our favourite royal outfits (before it enviably turns into another bun fight 🤣)

I’ll start with my favourite Catherine outfits first…

I like this navy dress that she wore in 2018. By Carolina Herrera - a far cry from the red monstrosity also by Herrera.

That's a great dress. I think navy is Meghan's colour, and simple, structured pieces suit her best.

This Dior dress she wore to one of her first royal events was also fab.

I don't think Catherine has been influenced by Meghan (or vice versa). However I do think there is some evidence that royal dressing in general has subtly changed since the death of the late Queen. More trousers and fewer coat dresses for one thing.

I think the Meghan/Kate comparison thing tends to ignore that fact that Kate has been in the public eye as a Royal for some 15 years now. A revolutionary concept I know, but fashions for workwear have also changed in the last 15 years. Her wardrobe, like most people’s, has evolved over time.

Kate absolutely wore “clean lines” before 2017. For several years after her marriage her uniform was a sheath dress in a neutral colour, and for less formal engagements was a blazer, a simple top underneath it and skinny trousers/jeans. See below for some exemplars of Kate’s quintessential style from 2011 onwards. From what we saw of Meghan’s style both pre and post meeting Harry, she also favoured shift dresses (sometimes she and Kate wore very similar styles - the lace dress for example is the same DvF dress, but Meghan’s is shorter than Kate’s) - as well as trouser suits and separates paired with trousers, but plenty of shift dresses.

Over time however (and coinciding with Meghan being more in the public gaze) the hemlines of dresses have fallen fell considerably, and sheath dresses and skirt suits for more formal wear have been overtaken by trousers and trousers suits. Wide legged trousers have also both come into fashion.

Both women’s wardrobes have adjusted accordingly. I don’t think either is copying each other, I think they are both just following fashion trends.

I agree.

Sorry, I don’t want to be the thread police but I am going to anyway 😆. This thread has been a refreshing change and an examination of the thing that royals have worn that posters both like and dislike, but without making it about the wearers themselves. It look s like you are trying to derail 🤷‍♀️

Honestly this has been a lovely thread. We’ve all been respectful of each other despite personal opinion. So it’s quite obvious when people are trying to goad and derail.

I recommend that we just ignore those types and post more beautiful outfits.

Princess Charlotte is very stylish. I can’t wait to see how she dresses when she’s older and choosing her own outfits (if she isn’t already).

I think most of the examples of royal women supposedly 'copying' each other are silly.

There are only so many styles of clothes, and nobody 'owns' any of them. Also, when you're photographed in different outfits as often as Meghan, Kate and especially Diana, inevitably they're going to be seen in similar outfits every so often. That doesn't mean they're 'copying' each other. I find the whole conversation rather juvenile and misogynist. Grown women can wear vaguely similar outfits without being in some sort of competition with each other.

One of my favourite tabloid article themes is when they post a photo of Diana in an extremely 80s sailor dress with a massive collar and drop waist, and then one of Catherine in a neatly tailored shirt dress and try to convince us that Catherine is "paying tribute" because both dresses are made of polka dot material.

There are only so many materials and styles out there.

I agree. So many outfits are obviously going to create many examples of them wearing very similar styles, and at similar times as fashions change.

Even here, where Kate and Queen Mary of Denmark are wearing literally the same , I don’t think anyone copied (I’ve no idea who wore either of these first), I just think they both liked similar styles at the same time, and so found the same dresses. They often have similar outfits so I do think they both favour the same things, so crossover isn’t surprising - I think there is another example of a state dinner dress worn by Kate also being worn by Mary.

It always makes me laugh when the magazines say Meghan/Catherine are giving a ‘sweet nod’ to Diana by wearing a similar outfit or piece of clothing. I think the only possibility of anyone copying someone is Meghan with the white blouse, jeans and sunglasses with hands on hips which is eerily similar to Diana’s outfit (posted above) However that was more to do with the pose than the outfit itself (which is pretty standard wardrobe staples).

Im also a bit iffy about Meghan’s Oprah interview dress and this one worn by Wallis Simpson. In regards to this outfit I think the style was actually really lovely on her, it was just let down the pattern which was a bit too splodgy around the edges and as it was only on one shoulder and bust made it look like a seagull had shat on her 🫣 But her hair and make up were lovely, she suits that soft round faced look that pregnancy brought her.

I had a dress with a dropped waist and a sailor collar-I was just copying all my fellow Sloans! They came from Laura Ashley (well, mine did-I bet Diana’s didn’t.)They came in light blue, navy, white and pink. And there were always about 6 at every event…

Princess Sofia of Sweden wore a forest green version of Meghan's Stella McCartney reception dress. I doubt she was 'copying' Meghan. More likely she saw the dress and liked it, and the fit and colour are very different anyway.

It's crazy really. I'm sure if someone was bored they could choose almost any two famous women and match their clothing.

My mum made me a polka dot sailor dress in the 80s. I wore it once, definitely not my style!

I think the shoulder would look better if she was standing up with a clear view of the fall of the skirt. But I did like the frock.

I always remember my granny commenting on Diana's engagement dress (black strapless) that you shouldn't wear that style to anywhere you are mostly sitting down as it gave the impression of a hip bath!

Not as bad as "oozing style". How can style be oozy?

In the photo that @themightysossidgeposted of Meghan in a white mini, it really shows off her beautiful legs. I don’t know why she wore that ghastly wide legged trouser ensemble the other day.

I thought the length was good and very flattering, but the fit was too square and made her look way too boxy. It highlighted her wide shoulders and made her look straight down from there. The pattern was nice, but overall it was a fashion miss for me.

I agree about both of those examples.

The Rwanda 'hands on hips' photo is just too similar to Diana's to be a coincidence. Not so much the outfit, which as you say is fairly generic, but the pose, facial expression and even the sunglasses tucked into the shirt. No way did that just 'happen.'

Also agree about the Wallis dress but it's long enough ago to be less of a 'copy' and more of an 'inspiration'.

An Interesting thread about my Royal outfits has now attracted the USUAL suspects who have now used this as a way to bash Meghan which appears to be their full time job.
Both women are attractive , but there is little doubt that Kate was influenced by Meghan .
In fact, there were several outfits that were worn by Kate , which were practically identical to outfits worn by Meghan on a previous occasion .
I don’t think that Kate has found her own personal style tbh. She appears to a skinny jeans and sweater girl . She looks great in casual clothing

I'm not going to derail again, but for every "Kate copied Meghan" claim, there is also an entirely valid "Meghan copied Kate" claim.

As pp have said - fashion changes over the years and both women follow fashion trends. And there are only so many colours - one women wearing a same colour outfit is not copying!

If you google images of Diana and jeans, she’s pretty much wearing exactly what’s in fashion right now.

PrettyFlyforaMaiTai · 27/04/2025 17:42

Wallis was also very stylish for the period

I think the main problem was the material, it seemed very thick and stiff.

Reetpetitenot · 27/04/2025 17:49

I think Wallis Simpson was let down by her posture - was she taller than her husband? She need to stand up straight with her shoulders back!

Yes, had it been a lighter, more floaty material it would have been much better.
