The royal family
OctopusFriend · 11/04/2025 15:48

Eh? It's not his to "hand" to anyone.
I do wish these journalists would open a book. So ignorant.

titchy · 11/04/2025 15:49

And you believe what Fox News claims? Really? Cos I know a Nigerian prince who would love to meet you.

OctopusFriend · 11/04/2025 15:50

It's a non article. It's best to use reputable news outlets.

Middleagedstriker · 11/04/2025 15:50

Well his mother dragged it out.

OctopusFriend · 11/04/2025 15:51

No, @Middleagedstriker She just lived to be 96. I doubt that was intentional.

Coffeeishot · 11/04/2025 15:52

Click bait bollocks a total non story I'm just so annoyed i clicked it ! Of course the King isn't going to "Hand over" anything .

saveforthat · 11/04/2025 15:52

Middleagedstriker · 11/04/2025 15:50

Well his mother dragged it out.

Dragged it out? Monarchs reign until they die (or do you think she should have died sooner?)

JandamiHash · 11/04/2025 15:54

The second hand embarrassment is deep.
Do Americans think the royal family works like some sort of Disney movie? Charles could be in a coma for the next 10 years and he’s still be King.

OctopusFriend · 11/04/2025 15:56

It's so strange, isn't it? You'd think people would inform themselves of the very basics! I had to laugh at the comment that William and Catherine were preparing for their role 🙄. No sheeeet.

INeedAnotherName · 11/04/2025 15:56

Of course he won't hand it over, he's got to die first. I really can't believe how utterly stupid some people are.

ICanTellYouMissMe · 11/04/2025 16:00

He hands it over by dying…

EuclidianGeometryFan · 11/04/2025 16:07

Although to be fair the last Pope changed the rules by retiring, so for the first time in history (I think) we legally and correctly had two living Popes - or is it one proper Pope and one ex-Pope?

OctopusFriend · 11/04/2025 16:09

Ah, @EuclidianGeometryFan - the Papacy has had a very interesting history! There were various times where there were several claimants running concurrently!
(Also a time when they bumped off rivals)

Orangemintcream · 11/04/2025 16:10

Would the throne not go to William if Charlie’s abdicates ?

Not that I think he would.

I'm guessing. He still wouldn't be allowed to hand it over, though. He'd have to go through Parliament.

Yes and then it .(I think) would be a Regency.

Coffeeishot · 11/04/2025 16:16

I don't think the King would abdicate.

I don't think a Regency would occur unless the King became incapacitated, and William had to take on the role. Should the King abdicate, Parliament would ask William to take the throne. Never going to happen though.

HonoriaBulstrode · 11/04/2025 16:19

She just lived to be 96.

And was doing her job up to two days before she died, as she vowed she would.

Charles could abdicate, but I doubt that he would, given his mother's example of lifelong service, and the general feeling that 'Uncle David' abandoned his duty by abdicating.

And why would he? He seems to enjoy being King, and he and W&C would probably all rather the children were older before W becomes King and George moves nearer the throne.

Coffeeishot · 11/04/2025 16:15

No, it wouldn’t be a regency. It is not a regency if the monarch abdicates and then a new monarch takes over/is crowned. Queen Elizabeth’s dad was not a regent when his brother abdicated; he was King.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 11/04/2025 16:20

Oh is it up for grabs then? I could do a shift tomorrow afternoon between 1 and 4 if he wants to hand it over to me for a bit.

Well I was talking about if the King "handed it over" due to ill health not abdication.

I'd send him a text. I think he might be back from Italy.

Does look like they'd need to pass another abdication act - and then it likely would pass to next in line.

I can't see the King doing this given family history - we also have history of regency for ill kings - Prince Regent acted for George III when he was too mentally ill to carry on though suspect they'll just have more of the role taken on by William.
