A bit tasteless to speculate on Charles's health in this way.

I thought that, if the monarch abdicates, the crown goes to his or her heir. I don’t think Parliament gets to hand it over.

Yes they do, because Parliament is Sovereign. Parliament ultimately decides who the next monarch is, ever since the Glorious Revolution of 1688.
We have a Constitutional Monarchy.

Jeremy Vine did a fantastic phone in about Charles yesterday. Varying degrees of delusionary personal insights and one apple cheeked old dear in Dorchester all but accused him (charles, not Vine) of murdering Princess Diana. Worth catching up on Sounds - it was radio gold.

Did it by any chance also include a number of people insistent that Camilla was meant to "be Queen Consort not Queen and Charles went against his mum's wishes"? Because they still don't understand that QC wasn't a title made up for Camilla and that she was always going to be Queen.

Well - at least it’s not Tudor times, when envisioning the death of the King was treason - punishable by death, I believe.

It's not that straightforward - the terms of the abdication have to be agreed as part of the act of parliament. Does it remove just the monarch; or also his descendants for example? Edward VIII's abdication removed his descendants (notionally, as he didn't have any at the time or in future).

PerkingFaintly · 11/04/2025 20:54

OP's plopped and run, then?

Obviously as it’s a stupid question. KC will do exactly like TLQ and reign until his death but let the PoW take on more and more duties.

Well his mother dragged it out.

That's a pretty nasty comment!

OctopusFriend · 11/04/2025 20:26

Even if he chooses to abdicate, the king doesn't "hand" the Crown to anyone. Parliament does.
I've heard varying reports about the popularity of KC3. Whatever.

It's a turn of phrase, as you well know.

TheAutumnCrow · 11/04/2025 21:21

Assuming that the King lives until 2034, Prince George will become a Counsellor of State when he turns 21, replacing Princess Beatrice. Princess Charlotte will replace Prince Andrew in 2036, and Prince Louis will supplant Prince Harry in 2039.

This is from the blog article linked to by a pp.

Tick tock tick tock for York, York and Sussex. Fascinating stuff.

The Instrument of Abdication removed it for any possible future children of Edward as well.

I know less than nothing about his state of health, but I have a friend who works at St Paul’s, which is the back-up funeral venue in case something means Westminster Abbey can’t be used, and not only do they have a FT staff member dedicated to Operation Menai Bridge, but meetings have ramped up in frequency to several per week. I mean, presumably they have to be very belt and braces about it all, and don’t think KC3 will make 96.

Several per week? Why on earth would the plans need so much change? A review every so often (annually?) to check if anything has changed. Not several per week 😂 no matter how close to death the monarch.

I think your 'friend' is feeding you bullsh*t (or they don't exist).

I'm inclined to agree!

OctopusFriend · 11/04/2025 22:34

Also - Operation London Bridge is for the monarch. Operation Menai Bridge is for the Prince of Wales, so if I was William, I'd start to worry 😧

Baital · 11/04/2025 22:37

I mean, the guest list in the overall plan will be e.g. all past prime ministers, the ambassadors of xyz, knights of the garter/whatever.

When the time comes the names will be slotted into each category.

The ceremonial will be 'the person in x role' will do y - which is why Penny Mordaunt carried the sword! Not because she had any expertise in sword carrying, simply because she was in a specific role that had been allocated the sword carrying job.

No need to review weekly.

I call bullsh*t!

The sudden, unexpected death of Diana, Princess of Wales meant the cabinet had to fall back on the only recently updated funeral protocol at the time, Operation Tay Bridge (intended for the then Queen Mother). I imagine lessons were learned from this and all the plans are now kept up to date regularly, so I don't think there is particular significance to one or other of the plans being revised.

OctopusFriend · 11/04/2025 22:51

@SwanOfThoseThings , very interesting, thanks, but I was just joking about the fact that the poster referred to Operation Menai Bridge being practised so frequently, and how William might feel.
I didn't know that about Tay Bridge.

Dragged it out? Monarchs reign until they die (or do you think she should have died sooner?)

They can pass it on before death

The specific ‘bridge’ was my error. I’m not British, and no longer live in the UK. She said (and I can assure you she exists) that the meetings (which are nothing to do with her job) were just referred to as ‘Bridge’. I have no idea, and very little interest, in what occurs at them.

It’s nothing to do with “tick tock” for the Sussex and York families. The Duked of Kent and Gloucester were Councillors of State when they were younger - but they weren’t pushed out.
