The royal family

Well I was talking about if the King "handed it over" due to ill health not abdication.

Yes, in which case William would be Regent.

Coffeeishot · 11/04/2025 16:21

OctopusFriend · 11/04/2025 16:18

I don't think a Regency would occur unless the King became incapacitated, and William had to take on the role. Should the King abdicate, Parliament would ask William to take the throne. Never going to happen though.

Yeah it's all hypothetical it really isn't going to happen,

I don't think the King would abdicate.

Only if god forbid he became gravely unwell and unable to carry out any duties then I think he probably would do. But that would be the only reason.

Kreisler · 11/04/2025 16:24

OctopusFriend · 11/04/2025 16:09

Ah, @EuclidianGeometryFan - the Papacy has had a very interesting history! There were various times where there were several claimants running concurrently!
(Also a time when they bumped off rivals)

Same with the royalty isn't it.

the King can't "hand it over" due to ill health. King's don't appoint Regents, If they are well enough to feel they cannot continue to do everything, they abdicate or they send other members of the Royal Family to do things as their representatives, just as the Queen did as she became frailer.

So true! Usually a brother and some nefarious plot!

godmum56 · 11/04/2025 16:26

actually it would be intersting if a similar situation did arise as Prince Harry is still a Councillor of State.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 11/04/2025 16:26

OctopusFriend · 11/04/2025 16:21

I'd send him a text. I think he might be back from Italy.

Good thinking. I'll send him a voice note and let him know he can have an afternoon to chillax in the sun with Cammy.

Musicaltheatremum · 11/04/2025 16:27

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 11/04/2025 16:20

Oh is it up for grabs then? I could do a shift tomorrow afternoon between 1 and 4 if he wants to hand it over to me for a bit.

😂😂😂😂

I thought he had been replaced on account of being non resident in the UK? I had read that Princess Anne had replaced him?
Correct me if I'm wrong!

You're a star. At least a Baronetcy for you!

Of course he won't hand it over, he's got to die first. I really can't believe how utterly stupid some people are.

This.

Too kind! To be honest there are a few laws I wouldn't mind bringing in and I'd quite like to reinstate the tower for certain family members they know who they are so I must confess my motives are entirely pure 🤭.

Kreisler · 11/04/2025 16:35

Jeremy Vine did a fantastic phone in about Charles yesterday. Varying degrees of delusionary personal insights and one apple cheeked old dear in Dorchester all but accused him (charles, not Vine) of murdering Princess Diana. Worth catching up on Sounds - it was radio gold.

I would applaud your endeavour. Who isn't troubled by pesky relatives?

OctopusFriend · 11/04/2025 16:39

Harry and Andrew have not officially been removed, but will not be called on.

Oh that sounds hilarious! I love all that bonkers conspiracy nonsense.

Yes and then it .(I think) would be a Regency.

No. He could abdicate ( as Edward VIII did) but yes that has to go through Parliament

No interest in the article, but I love the comments about how stupid people are. Back at you - monarchs reign until they die, unless they abdicate. In other circumstances they may effectively be replaced by a Regent, should they be unable to fulfill their duties. I find it hard to believe that people don't know this - does that make them stupid?

user2848502016 · 11/04/2025 16:47

Ridiculous, of course he won’t “hand it over”, he’ll be King until he dies then William becomes King.
In extreme circumstances if Charles really can’t carry out his duties he could declare a regency- but Charles would still be King and William Prince Regent. I can’t see that happening though because the monarch isn’t essential enough these days to need a Regency - other royals would just step up to cover royal duties.
These American “news” articles about our royal family really get on my nerves, they have no idea how it works and it’s nothing to do with them anyway!

actually it would be intersting if a similar situation did arise as Prince Harry is still a Councillor of State.

The current Counsellors of State are the King, the Queen Consort, the Prince of Wales, the Princess Royal, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke of Sussex, the Duke of York, and Princess Beatrice. Whilst Harry is a CoS he wouldn't be called upon because he is no longer a working Royal.

Lunde · 11/04/2025 16:51

King Charles spent 70 years in waiting as heir - from the age of 3 to 73. So I guess he plans to do it as long as he can.

He seems to be enjoying it as well, so I hope he carries on for a while.
