The royal family

Do you think Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are royal, or royalty?

"Being royal": I wonder what that means.

A person can marry in and become uber-royal (Prince Philip).

A royal-born can marry out and remain royal (Charlotte Casiraghi, Eugenie/Zara/Peter etc).

Is Mike Tindall royal? If so, why? If not, how royal is Meghan Markle (asking about her specifically given how she's pushing Meghan Sussex now)? Is Harry royal after his disloyalty to and disdain for the wearers of the crown and the nation's subjects (reverse-treason?!)?

Personally I don't think Mike Tindall or Meghan Markle are royal: they're married to members of the royal family, can become divorced and would then be neither members of the family nor royal. Had she lived, I think Diana wouldn't be deemed royal today, notwithstanding being the future kings' mother and grandmother.

Just pondering. I think royalty is a matter of royal acts and service to subjects, rather than a matter of fact. I don't think the Duke or Windsor was royal after abdication (certainly not his wife).

It's all such a crock if you really think about it. What makes any of them better than any of us, or worthy of curtseys and all that?

I enjoy the soap opera aspect but enough is enough. William could do a huge service by ending the monarchy and going off to lead a quiet life with his millions or billions. Let them all get jobs.

Camilla is not royal in her own right. She has royal status on account of Charles. If she outlives Charles, William will become King and Camilla will no longer be the queen.
A president would be a ceremonial role, almost exactly the same as the monarchy, but without the nepotism. The Prime Minister would still be in charge, just like today.
Unless you wanted a presidency like the US or France. GOD FORBID.
One like Estonia or Germany would be ok, but not sure it would save us any money and tourism would probably take a hit.

I disagree. Camilla has been anointed Queen Consort. That gives her personal status, not equal to Charles of course, greater than just the status of being married in.

They're part of the royal family. There isn't any other qualification needed.

GrumpyCatHasFleas · 13/05/2025 14:04

Kate maybe have been a commoner but she’s the most royal of them all

and William I like him too

as for Mike Tindal
and Megan never in a million years !

Harry I do kinda feel a bit sorry for

GrumpyCatHasFleas · 13/05/2025 14:06

Time for Camilla and Charles to step down in the spirit of making the monarchy strong
frsh blood needed and noone respects love rats
and the king and queen should at least be people you can respect at the very least

Profhilodisaster · 13/05/2025 21:24

I’ve read the word 'royal' so many times in my head that it now sounds weird!

C3 waited seventy years for the top gig. He's not going to step down.

And the 'fresh' blood you're citing so far looks even more reactionary than his Papa.

Be careful what you wish for 😎

I don’t think that’s right.

Firstly, what’s the definition of “family”? Are second cousins included? First, even?

Does this mean blood family?

Wallis Simpson was part of the then royal family. Was she royal? I really don’t think so.

There’s a difference between regal and royal, and between the family (like yours and mine) and the job (we don’t even have a family business).

I think today the royalty is working royals + supporting cast of eg Edward/Sophie, Anne, Zara/Beatrice/Eugenie. I don’t consider Andrew to be royalty anymore, regardless of his Prince status/son of king. He’s thoroughly disgraced and been stripped of all honorary titles. He’s not invited to things, he doesn’t and can’t represent the family. He’s just a member of the family, not a member of the family business.

Harry is the King's son and Meghan is his wife. Therefore they are part of the family and are royal.

Confused

You said that before, and I replied to it with a refutation. You’re saying the same thing again, should I say the same thing again? I’d hoped for a sliiiightly more nuanced discussion than that…

As far as I'm concerned it doesn't warrant a discussion. Harry is the King's son and will be the King's brother. He is obviously a member of the royal family and Meghan is his wife, therefore she is also a member.

Do you think Harry or Meghan are royal, or royalty? Of course Harry and his wife are members of the family. That cannot be in dispute.

Some people don’t understand the subtle difference unfortunately!

I've explained twice that Harry and Meghan are members of the royal family. That's the third time.

Onlyonekenobe · 15/05/2025 00:26

🤦🏼‍♀️

ETA: perhaps this inability to understand the difference, plus the insistence that I’m the thick one, is actually the answer I’m looking for.

I can see op is strained, so I will help , Harry and Meghan are members of the royal family just like Andrew and Sarah , they are royal , not royalty!
hope that helps.

caringcarer · 15/05/2025 01:46

No, they stepped away from being royal.

Tbrh · 15/05/2025 05:38

Well by definition Royalty is blood right, appointed from God was it? So Harry yes, Meghan no. But equally no to Catherine and Camilla too. Personally I find it all very archaic!

Onlyonekenobe · 15/05/2025 12:13

Royalty is people who are royal by blood or status. So Harry yes, and Catherine and Camilla too (latter is literally the Queen). The ? is over status. Andrew, for example, has been ex-communicated to an extent his blood relationship can’t undo. He’s still a member of the family so gets whatever bones his sibling chooses to throw his way. But nothing else. Harry hasn’t been ex-communicated, Meghan wasn’t “in” enough to warrant any action being taken against her.

I only think of Royalty as Charles, William, Harry and Anne/Ed/Andrew as they are direct descendants. I suppose W&K's children are as children of the heir. It's all bonkers.

Don't think of the rest of them as royalty. Especially not Mike Tindall,.. just read a shocking article where MikeT got bladdered after a night on the booze, and got in at 4am to his MIL's apartment in St.James Palace. But had to be up at 8.30am for an appointment.

Zara couldn't wake him by phone so 'for a laugh' told the Police and got them to send round five police in full riot gear and machine guns. Apparently this shows how down to earth, popular, with a great sense of humour they are.

FFS. Do people really buy into this shit? I'm fed up with the lot of them to be honest!

CheFaro · 15/05/2025 13:16

It’s just primitive bloodline stuff, isn’t it? and, until very recently, primitive male primogeniture bloodline stuff with appropriate fillies brought in as necessary, as Prince Philip is said to have David of Princess Diana, ‘to breed in a bit of height’.
