Your choice for Head of State?

JoyousGreyOrca · 10/03/2025 01:26

If you could have anyone in the world as the UK Head of State who would you choose?

I would choose Michelle Obama. Incredibly bright, passionate and well connected woman who is used to talking to world leaders.

Otherwise I'll plump for Rory Stewart purely on the strength of his book, Politics on the Edge, which is an excoriating review of the process of government in the UK.

Do they have to be currently alive or are we allowed to pick people from throughout the ages? If so I'll go for Oscar Wilde.

noo, not Wilde.
he was very intelligent and witty but I always think of him as very much having a superiority complex; I can't imagine he had much time for people he saw as "beneath" him.
massive guess here as I obviously never met the man!!

Mightymoog · 10/03/2025 18:02

I know. i know!!!
Keanu Reeves.

Well used to mixing with the great and the good so wouldn't be tongue tied but also seems to be incredibly down to earth and has friends from every walk of life.
he also lives really modestly and gives a large amount of money away to people in his local community.
TBh I've never heard a bad word about him.

valder · 10/03/2025 18:02

I'm far too invested in this. Am looking up who has been on Desert Island Discs and the honours lists. Still thinking!

Now there's a good pick to keep me going. 😊

I've no idea who Rory stewart is and misread it for Rod Stewart ( a valid choice still!)

could you specify what he has personally achieved that means he's doing a good job?

He hasn't pissed off Canada, Mexico, Ukraine, or most of Europe to the point where they are smacking your country with tariffs and refusing to buy your goods.

Instead, Americans are buying out High Grove products to spite H & M.

Sounds like a good job to me.

Baroness Floella Benjamin

I can't believe 31% of people voted for her to get her Food Hell on Saturday Kitchen. What have they got against lovely Floella?

Great choice. She would get my vote if it ever happens.

Well I've not done those things either!
I was looking more for things he has actually done.

Neemie · 10/03/2025 18:09

Mightymoog · 10/03/2025 17:43

that's not actually achieving anything.

You say 3 things.
He can chat ( as can 99% of people; especially self confident wealthy people)
he has a good tailor ( not really his achievement, is it?)
he doesn't do anything embarassing ( well he looked a tit when he had a massive strop about a pen)

I fail to see how that makes him a good HOS
could you list a few things he has personally achieved please

I really don’t take this anything like as seriously as you. I don’t know anything much about him or his pen situation. I do think he is fine. It isn’t the job for someone really sparky because they have to be so neutral and not piss off too many people. Although he has clearly got your goat, so maybe he isn’t the man for the job.

JoyousGreyOrca · 10/03/2025 18:09

If we are going to include people who are dead, I suggest Jesus.

I'm a long time lefty but I think Rory Stewart could be interesting.
He gives of intelligent, Head Boy vibes. Wants to do the right thing.

well you said he was doing a good job so i wanted to know what your reasons for thinking that were but there don't appear to be any ; which makes sense as he has achieved f all

valder · 10/03/2025 18:15

Maybe the after tea crowd will give some more suggestions. No offence to anyone, and I include myself in this - the suggestions so far are relatively uninspiring.

I'm finding it very strange on my part that I cannot immediately think of anyone without having to look up lists etc. Am I alone in this? One would imagine that out of our sizeable population someone would jump out at me as the ideal candidate.

But maybe the best candidates are under the radar.

tinydynamine · 10/03/2025 18:18

Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Petula Clark and Joan Collins on a rotating presidency basis.

I’m trying to think of the achievements that would qualify someone to be a non political head of state. I suppose charity work and promoting the country. He has done lots of that kind of stuff. What list of achievements would you like to see?

AcquadiP · 10/03/2025 18:20

Cattery · 10/03/2025 17:09

All he did was walk round with his hands behind his back following the Queen. Never did a day’s work in his life. Came out with some horrifically embarrassing quips.

He was decorated for bravery during WW11 and well respected by our armed forces.

Ted27 · 10/03/2025 18:33

Victoria Derbyshire

CrushingOnRubies · 10/03/2025 18:34

Jeremy Clarkson. Not just because of all that JC for Pm a few years ago

More out of intrigue and he would either be great or awful

But he has experience in agriculture, transport, bbc communications,

And he doesn't hold back.

Realise he is a very marmite personality

Not2identifying · 10/03/2025 18:35

Michelle Obama (and a few other people suggested) not being British doesn't have to be an issue. Charles is King of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, etc, without citizenship or living there.

LOL.
have you seen the amount of medals the RF wear.
Princess Anne has a rows of them

Alan Bates, of Post Office challenge fame.

He's kind of forced to support charities but manages it without putting his hand into his very very full pockets.
He is in the position due to who gave birth to him so I think it's on the supporters to justify his position as i am increasingly baffled.
So far having a good tailor is one of his main "achievements"
