How will the Royal Family end?

The Royal Family will end. Not yet obviously. But within the next generation.

People often assume institutions like this fall slowly and gradually. We see a bit of that already happening with the reduction in "working" Royals, far less favourable poll results than when Queen Elizabeth reigned, and the willingness of the media to be more critical of the Royal Family.

I have seen people commenting assuming this means the Royal family will end soon. I think they misunderstand what is happening.

But society is changing and the deference that Queen Elizabeth attracted can no longer be taken for granted. Colonies are no longer happy for the Royals to carry out cosplay colonial tours on their soil, and increasingly they will remove the King as their Head of State. But I think when the end comes it will be sudden and unexpected. Similar to the fall of the Soviet Union. A clear weakening of the institution, but then a sudden, and shocking fall.

The aftermath will be very messy though as the Royal family try and fight for as much of the states wealth as they can, using the courts if they need to.

I do think there will be public disquiet about the cost of Charles state funeral and Williams coronation when the time comes.
People generally did not object to the cost of Queen Elizabeth's funeral, but Charles is nowhere near as popular. Unless of course William forgoes a formal Coronation? He did not do a ceremony for his Wales investiture, so maybe he could do the same for becoming King?

@DappledThings I still am not convinced Queen Elizabeth actually agreed to it, or agreed to it only under intense pressure. Not that it matters to the post at all.

I notice you were silent about the extremely nasty personal comments made to me that left me shaken.

Why would the late Queen not agree to it? By all accounts she was close to Camilla and she obviously wanted her son to be as happy and supported as possible when the time
came for him to ascend to the throne. Why do you imagine the late Queen would have been so mean and petty as to not want Camilla to be consort? The late Queen has probably judged that the vast majority of people had warmed to Camilla and would be happy for her to be Queen consort (which she would have been even without the late Queen’s endorsement anyway) and she just wanted to voice her approval. I think you are completely reaching to say that she didn’t agree to it

edited persistent stupid autocorrect 🙄

I think that would be a good move, if we have to have a monarchy in the first place that is. I found Charles's Coronation to be jarringingly opulent in tone given the CoL crisis, and the £72 million charge to taxpayers beyond excessive.

I find the whole concept of smothering yourself in silk robes and wearing diadems of jewels very strange though when taking on a job to "serve" your people when a solemn vow and a business suit would do.

JoyousGreyOrca · 15/02/2025 19:49

@Sallyslider653 Skipping an actual coronation event sidesteps the whole issue of Christianity for the coronation.

@smilesy She did not even attend their marriage service.

Are you seriously policing other posters as to whether they respond to your perceptions of posts (I note the posts you're referencing have not been deleted by mods)? It is your thread but not your talk guidelines

Can someone point to these awful comments?
I didn't see them .

Not the civil ceremony but she did attend the service of blessing and the reception so hardly boycotting it or not showing her support for it all.

No, because as head of the CofE she probably thought it best not to go to the wedding of two divorcees. However, she went to the religious blessing so it’s unlikely she had any personal animosity to the wedding. Charles and Camilla were married in 2005. There is a lot of water under the bridge since then. Queen Elizabeth had obviously managed to move on. She was prepared to acknowledge that Charles and Camilla are good together and be happy for them. Very sensible

What the heck is all this ? You were left shaken by something somebody posted ? Maybe MN isn't the place for you ? Did you report the post?

JoyousGreyOrca · 15/02/2025 20:00

@myrtleWilson why would they be deleted? I did not report them. MN only respond to reports.

I'll correct my most recent post (see, how easy it is Joyous) as at least one of the posts have now been deleted, which wasn't the case a couple of hours ago. But it was around 9pm yesterday

dorathexplorer · 15/02/2025 20:06

I have no idea what you are talking about other than referring to that something on this thread left you "shaken" ? You've mentioned it at least twice now so thought you would have reported it if against talk guidelines and it left you "shaken" . I therefore have to assume it wasn't against guidelines. The phrase " if you can't take the heat" springs to mind.

Okay, it was one comment that was incredibly nasty and left me shaken. Someone else must have reported it. Personally I prefer nasty comments to stand so there is clear evidence of what that person has stooped to.

Are you going to apologise for jumping to assumptions?

dorathexplorer · 15/02/2025 20:15

Also note I said " would have reported" as in that would be a sensible thing to do if you were so badly shaken. I know I would have.

JoyousGreyOrca · 15/02/2025 20:16

Well maybe we can get back to talking about the demise of the Royal family?
Maybe George would be happy as he could just live as a rich private citizen?

OP posts:
dorathexplorer · 15/02/2025 20:19

I'm going to say this sincerely @joyous - if you are so shaken by something someone said yesterday then seriously have a break. It's banter with people here. You know how it goes . Have a break and do something which is less stressful. Honestly MN isn't worth it .

jeffgoldblum · 15/02/2025 20:27

Ok I have studiously gone back over the thread because I hate to think someone posted something horrible to anyone that would leave them shaking and horrified but can only see one deleted post , which if I remember rightly , said something about 'sycophants supporting h and m '
Is that the post?

JoyousGreyOrca · 15/02/2025 20:27

@dorathexplorer If I said even half the things to Royal supporters that have been said to me, I would have been banned. It is not banter. It is designed to chase those critical of the Royal family off the board.

Which of the many many topics that you have thrown into this thread would you like us to discuss? Every time someone picks up the discussion and disagrees you switch to a different one.

Finance?
Church of England?
Camilla as Queen Consort?
William not working enough?
Privilege?
The fact they are bad for you personally?
