How will the Royal Family end?

The Royal Family will end. Not yet obviously. But within the next generation.

People often assume institutions like this fall slowly and gradually. We see a bit of that already happening with the reduction in "working" Royals, far less favourable poll results than when Queen Elizabeth reigned, and the willingness of the media to be more critical of the Royal Family.

I have seen people commenting assuming this means the Royal family will end soon. I think they misunderstand what is happening.

But society is changing and the deference that Queen Elizabeth attracted can no longer be taken for granted. Colonies are no longer happy for the Royals to carry out cosplay colonial tours on their soil, and increasingly they will remove the King as their Head of State. But I think when the end comes it will be sudden and unexpected. Similar to the fall of the Soviet Union. A clear weakening of the institution, but then a sudden, and shocking fall.

The aftermath will be very messy though as the Royal family try and fight for as much of the states wealth as they can, using the courts if they need to.

But you originally brought up the Sussex Squad in one of your posts. Up until then they hadn't been mentioned.

Because that was one of my reasons for why I sometimes defend the Waleses. Because those types of attack posts on them seem so unfair and unhinged sometimes.

TulipTiptoer · 14/02/2025 20:07

Your posts are deliberately provocative. Why don't you tell me why she would be elected instead.

Because in a democracy where anyone can run for high office, anyone can be elected if they tick the right boxes for the populace who are eligible to vote. I would have never imagined a racist spiv like Nigel Farage or a sex offender like Donald Trump would gain high office, but here we are.

TulipTiptoer · 14/02/2025 19:59

I don't agree. I can think of many who aren't 'posh white people'

You choose to see that.

Those are the names that always come up. I am seeing what republicans are writing.

That is why i would favour a community doing due diligence of who can stand for election.

I don't know the answer, but have any of the RF ever had a real full time PAYE job with rules and regs, set annual leave allowances, fixed pay subject to appraisal and so on? Maybe some have.

I am not including Catherine's short stint with the shop she "worked" in, and I am not singling her out either. I suppose one day a week in an art gallery passes, and being an ambassador (influencer) for some product or other when you're not an on the books Royal (Zara and DH eg.). I suppose marrying well is another day's work.

OK OK, I am being sarky - well a bit!. So what have their full time jobs been if any, you know - out there in the real world. Not necessary I suppose, so I am reluctant to call that which they actually do now as work, as the lesser mortals know it to be.

I wonder if they pay NI and payroll taxes/self assessment on their (Sovereign Grant) salaries lol.... 😊

Can you tell me why you think Carrie Johnson would be elected because you have pushed me to say why she wouldn't. I have pointed out she was hugely unpopular, yet you seem to think she would have a chance. Why? What would be her media game to make that happen?

On here on this thread?

Yes, but the question I was answering - on this thread - was about a more general point (why do some people like the Wales so much that they defend them), so my answer was in response to that. I didn't accuse anyone on this particular thread of attacking W&K.

I feel as though you think I am arguing a point that I'm not

@BigWillyLittleTodger Yes my life would be improved by the abolition of the Royal family.

Well it won't, because it's not going to happen in your lifetime.

It was supposed to say committee

OP posts:
myrtleWilson · 14/02/2025 20:42

Okay @JoyousGreyOrca my question still stands - what committee? Are you thinking of a HoC committee or HoL or a new sort of committee like an inquiry - led by a judge, or perhaps a citizens jury?

It's not me who brought up Carrie Johnson. It was you who declared that she could never be elected. I don't see why I should disprove your negative, but, like I say, in a democracy where anyone can stand, then anyone can become head of state. But I'll give you this idea. What if enough Boris supporters (those who delivered him to no. 10 in 2019 with a landslide) decided she'd be a great proxy for that flop haired muppet. And got enough good PR and election finance behind her? What's to stop her running?

Thank you @JoyousGreyOrca for providing confirmation that there would be due diligence within the community. What does that actually mean in practice?

Most male royals (except Edward) have served in a branch of the armed forces. The non working royals all currently have jobs of some kind of another. In the Senior Royals William was a search and rescue pilot. Sophie worked, Edward worked, albeit not very successfully. I'm not sure about Anne.

Do the "blood" royals have experience of being on the breadline? No but most of them, particularly in William's generation have held a job of some kind.

I guess Sophie - was a full time PR person for several years - she's probably the only one who actually had to deal with a job in real every day circumstances.

Charles and Andrew did several years in the Navy - although like Harry I'm sure it wasn't quite the same as regular service people.

William did his RAF stint - and then his air ambulance job - which is not the same as set annual leave and he was able to donate his pay. But he did have a shift pattern, and was bound by the rules and regulations of that job on his shifts so as close an experience to a proper job as any heir before him I imagine. Working as a first responder is actually a good choice for a future head of state I think.

bitteroldseetrouts · 14/02/2025 20:45

I'll add @TulipTiptoer the fervent calls for Michelle Obama to stand for president, even though she doesn't want to. I would think Obama supporters would see her presidency as an extension of her husband's two terms in office.

I am sure there's nothing to stop her running but good old BJ is tainted and I imagine she'd get nowhere against other far more worthy people. Glad you called him a muppet!

Nope, unfortunately the US is very misogynistic and it will be a long time before any party puts another female candidate forward.

CathyorClaire · 14/02/2025 20:47

It does make me laugh when you put names forward and republicans get so affronted at the very thought of someone they don’t like being President 😂 the cognitive dissonance!

Well you've suggested a dead bloke and an éminence grise as potential candidates. I have very little doubt there's a deeper pool to dip from.

Well yes, but the point is, the democrats/liberals want Michelle because they want Barack back. They still haven't found anyone to replace him/equal him, so they would have him back via his wife.

What on earth are you talking about? What have I said about people holding hands?

I'm talking about the Sussex squad led attacks on the Waleses and sometimes Charles and Camilla - they often come with specific copy and talking points directly from Twitter that you can (at the time) cross reference with awful stuff posted on there by posters with all the Sussex squad tags in their user names etc.

Also the posters who blindly praise everything the Sussexes do without being able to acknowledge some of the really awful things they have done like the Ulvade trip.

Olay calm down. I didn't say you had said it, if you read carefully i said For example if...

I was simply giving an example to make my point.

Actually the part of your comment is responded to was this: we've all been on these boards long enough to see the patterns of those who violently defend the Sussexes (no matter what weird or inappropriate stuff they do)

So my point again...just because someone doesn't think something they do is weird or inappropriate doesn't make them a person who violently defends them. What one person seems inappropriate another doesn't. And who is the one who ultimately decides what is or isn't weird? It's subjective. I'm sure you would not like it if someone said well we've all been on these boards long enough to see the patterns of those who constantly bitch about the Sussexs hiding behind its just criticism (no matter how normal what they are doing might be)

delvar · 14/02/2025 20:50

Just a note - if UK decided to have a President, it could restrict candidature to those born in the UK only (like POTUS). Boris Johnson would be out of that race then wouldn't he? Any other miscreants we could include in the exclusion.😊

Oh well, that's Joanna Lumley out of the picture. Along with a lot of hard working immigrants who have contributed a lot to this country.
