Kensington Palace have released a photo of the Princess of Wales photographed by her youngest son, Prince Louis. It is to mark World Cancer Day, which is tomorrow.

How cute!

As has been said before, we all contribute to things we don’t necessarily agree with. I’m not overjoyed at the NHS paying for people to have elective C sections without medical need but apparently we do that now.

gosh, you've really confirmed your lack of empathy there!
Pain relief isn't stricly a necessity either. let's ditch that !

I know that wasn't aimed at me, but no, I really don't understand the intense hatred for people who haven't done you any harm. It's mind-boggling.

The only people I do dislike intensely are certain world 'leaders' who do have the potential to do a great deal of harm to a great deal of people.

It’s really odd isn’t it, you can feel the rage coming off the page, personally I save my hatred for children and animal abusers, not a constitutional monarchy that works at our elected governments behest and represents our country on the world stage.

I don't think anyone reading your posts on this thread will be taking lectures in empathy from you.

Missing my point. I personally can’t see why that would be something I/we pay for if it’s not a medical need, but we do. Someone else might say do away with universal bus passes.

Many people want a constitutional monarchy and are happy to pay for it.

Same thing.

you don't understand that people are resentful at being forced to give billionaires some of their money? Really? Wow.

Yes, really. Why waste energy raging over something you cannot change?

I'd like to not pay for education now that my children are no longer in school. I'd also quite like not to pay for those who refuse to work and contribute nothing into the system. I can't do that, so I don't get my knickers in a twist over it.

Wow.

Hmm don’t think I’ll be taking lessons of empathy from you after your previous posts on this thread. And you wonder why people would prefer a monarchy to a republic. Look in the mirror!

bitteroldseetrouts · 04/02/2025 16:03

In a republic such s the US, you could be paying your head of state tax $ for a shifty, multi millionaire dementia patient or.... another shifty, multi millionaire possible dementia patient and criminal. At least with the RF you get a bit of pomp, tradition and glamour and plenty of goodwill (yes, there still is!). Can someone sell a republic to me that isn't purely based on hating a commoner who married in?

winfongdown · 04/02/2025 16:09

@Mightymoog you need to understand that just because someone has a different opinion from you doesn't mean that they don't understand what you are saying or they don't understand the thing you are talking about. Do you understand ?

Apologies if I'm repeating this, haven't caught up with the whole thread.

But can you expand on exactly how KC has been more open about his cancer?

What kind of cancer does he have? What treatment did he have? When did it finish? Has it finished? Is he in remission?

I'm not expecting you to answer, but I just like to make clear that KC has not been any more open (in some ways, he has been less) than Catherine has. This narrative seems to have sprung up and it's based on zero reported facts. Bizarre, but again it's used to criticise the woman.

Good points, but I didn't say "more open", I just said "open". So you have misread me. The King and the Princess have both offered similar levels of info - which is plenty, and I certainly don't think either of them should be obligated to share private medical details.
The King seems to have kept it light, joking "well , I'm still alive" etc. Catherine has gone for more of what I would consider the sentimental approach - I'm thinking of her video, and also the slightly confusing comnent with this new photo.
Personally, I prefer stoicism and the old stiff upper lip, a la the King, but that's just me. Each to their own.

CoffeeCantata · 04/02/2025 16:36

Yes - and so do I, BigWilly.

I wonder if any of the angry anti-monarchists see the irony in their posts? They themselves are most certainly NOT a great advert for republicanism. It reminds me of Aesop's fable about the sun and the wind (the warm sun got the person to take their cloak off faster than the nasty, cold wind blowing them). Almost without exception the nastiness, the cruel personal stuff and the spite comes from the anti-monarchists. (There are some honourable exceptions, of course - some republican posters on here are thoughtful, moderate and don't make it personal, and I appreciate that..

When I was younger I was much more left-wing but my experience over my working life of encountering extreme left-wing people (not your regular Labour voters, who are a good broad church) put me right off. They were far and away the nastiest people I've ever come across. brimming with hatred and lust for revenge on anyone they saw as richer or more privileged than them. I'd hate to live under their rule!

Just my personal experience...

IAmATorturedPoet · 04/02/2025 16:44

Similar levels of medical info may have been provided, however, they are at different stages of their lives. I can completely understand why at nearly 80 years of age Charles is giving it ‘well I’m still alive’ and has a more jovial approach. Catherine on the other hand is only early 40’s with a very young family.

Other peoples judgement/preference as to who has the better approach out of the two is completely irrelevant and leaves a bad taste.

You may be happy to give billionaires some of your money but I don't want to give any of them a penny of mine which is why I'm so bitter about them.

You must be able to understand that?

I'd rather give a few quid to the monarchy, which I find interesting and entertaining, than shell out loads for people who can't be bothered to change out of their pyjamas and get paid work, which I don't find remotely interesting or entertaining.

I'll stick a fiver in for you as it's obviously causing you such angst (I'm not overly happy at paying Nigel Farage's parliamentary salary, but I don't lose sleep over it).

JoyousGreyOrca · 04/02/2025 17:35

@Reetpetitenot Can you send me £25 to pay for my annual contribution to the Royal Family please?
It is way more than a £5.

I would be terrified if I was her, she appears to have led a healthy lifestyle and out of nowhere she gets a diagnosis

The worry of possibly leaving your children would be overwhelming and she now has to live with a shadow hanging over her, wondering about every pain, lump bruise etc

I'd be interested to see where you get your info from. Or is this Republic's fag packet calculations?

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 04/02/2025 17:52

As a constitutional monarchist (not a royalist) I’d be happy to have a balanced view put forward as to how we were to become a republic. But unfortunately that’s not happening here.

The language used by some posters would quite frankly turn me into a royalist.

After Brexit I’ll stick with what we have. A constitutional monarchy.

Genuinely, I don’t mind Republicans. I can see their point of view even if I don’t necessarily always agree with it. Yes, the Royal Family do need to be reformed, they’re not perfect. But the Republicans on this thread are criticising an innocent photo of a son taking a photo of his mother out in nature. A woman who has just completed chemotherapy and has recently been declared cancer free. It’s really not a good luck for them and to be honest it makes me feel more protective of Catherine. This isn’t the way to convert people to your cause.

There was a lovely knowledgeable poster called Rousette, who I didn’t necessarily agree with but I came to respect as they respected others’ point of view. It was actually interesting to read her opinions and discover all the loopholes etc that they have in place to stop them having to pay tax etc.

They say you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. The Republicans on this thread seem bitter, petty and joyless.

It reminds me of Horrible Histories ‘King of Bling’ song, about why the country restored the monarchy.

“Old Ollie wasn’t jolly
He was glum, and he was proud
Would be miserable as sin
Only sinning’s not allowed!
When Ollie died, the people said
‘Charlie, me hearty!
Get rid of his dull laws
Come back, we’d rather party!”

I respect the Republican viewpoint and have many friends who hold it. It is perfectly valid.

I don't respect those whose Republicanism seems to purely consist of sniping at a (married in, descended from coalminers, recently very unwell) woman as if she's a combo of Cersei Lannister and the Dragon Empress with Zara accessories. She's criticised by some for everything she does (posting a photo taken by her 6 year old, holding children's hands as recent examples)
