I don't think we're done talking - and I never start threads!

As you were!

No. Not through private messaging but time and time again posters have said in areas outside of the royal family board on MN, words that echo my thoughts on it. That they wouldn't post in the RF board

Which is why you get a broader set of opinions elsewhere on MN on threads about the royals

I travel all over MN and have never seen anyone say anything like "by the way, you know, just off-topic, but I'd never post of the RF board".

BigWillyLittleTodger · 26/01/2025 13:57

@MargaretThursday it can be particularly tiresome at a certain time of day when a few new names appear, sling insults at posters and skulk off again, unfortunately it’s as regular as clockwork always with the caveat of claiming not to be a fan.

The tactic that I loathe is when an OP say something stark:

"well, John's not my favourite royal"

Which then gets paraphrased or otherwise mis-quoted (but not misunderstood) by people on the other side of the debate - something like:

"you said you don't like John".

Which then gets blown up into a complete derail - "I never said that... you're misquoting me... you're just making stuff up.... where did I say that?" that can rumble on for pages. (Which I think is possibly the intent.)

And it is always one side of the, ahem, debate that does this.

MargaretThursday · 26/01/2025 15:02

@BigWillyLittleTodger
I'm not regular enough to notice that, but I do notice that it seems to be a bit like ants - you don't get one saying something, you get a whole swarm that are all saying similar things at the same time.

Out of interest, I advanced searched the words "Royal" and "Board" over the last couple of years to see what mentions there had been, because I hadn't particularly noticed any.

I looked at the first few pages and found:

63% posts that mentioned the board, were simply querying why a post had been put in chat/AIBU rather the the RF Board, with no comment about any thoughts on the board. Like people do with many other subjects. Most of the threads were now in the RF board, so I assume were moved by MN.

The ones that did say anything about toxicity the majority (55%) were just expressing that the board was toxic/nasty etc with no comment on either side.

The ones which did mention one "side" or the other, more than 4x as many were commenting how nasty they were to Kate on the RF board (a lot were over the "where is Kate" last Easter), although I did notice the ones saying how nasty the board is to Megan were disproportionally from one particular board (not AIBU/chat), so if you mostly go on that one then you could get a skewed view.

Likewhatever · 26/01/2025 15:40

Extiainoiapeial · 26/01/2025 00:06

I know you don't.

But one thing I do know.... If this thread was out in Chat or AIBU the reaction would be very different. Harry and Meghan detractors do not make having a different opinion on the royal family board a pleasant experience so very many avoid

Actually I avoid these threads because of posters like yourself. I can happily take differences of opinion when backed up with evidence or reasoned argument but I find the whining and finger pointing and “wowing” incredibly tiresome.

It’s a shame because there are plenty of excellent posters making strong points, including occasionally from the Sussex standpoint.

But people who are here to disrupt are given too much of their energy. Not mine however.

BemusedAmerican · 26/01/2025 15:43

@MargaretThursday Those stats sound accurate. I almost dropped of during the anti-Kate viciousness especially since the posters were so nasty but I decided that doing so would allow them to strike a blow against free speech.

I also make a point of not responding to a post targeted directly at me.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/01/2025 15:54

MargaretThursday · 26/01/2025 13:44

I'm one who generally avoids posting on these threads, and often avoid this boards because of the behaviour of a few.

The people who clearly believe the H&M do no wrong (even though they normally start off with something like "I'm not a fan but...") derail threads, and sling insults around about other posters or other members of the RF, which changes what could be an interesting discussion into a two-sided debate.

That's a loss to us all, MargaretThursday, considering the measured sort of comments you post elsewhere

We don't have to engage in goadiness though, which after all can only continue if it gets attention; much easier to scroll on by, unless it's something which needs HQ's input

100% agree.
There us a style of posting you find here that tips quickly into haranguing people over everything and nothing, and querying why posters here are so interested in people they don't know.

JoyousGreyOrca · 26/01/2025 16:28

I deleted my profile after the constant racism towards Meghan on this board. I know MNGQ deleted lots of threads full of racism, but I simply could not stomach it.

Nonsense, I’ve been reading these threads forever. There were a few posters who for their own reasons constantly tried to drag the discussion back to race, always claiming racism. Mostly people didn’t engage, some naively did. The baiters still crop up from time to time. Fortunately posters are wiser and no longer bite.

Likewhatever · 26/01/2025 16:36

And I realise I may have fallen into that trap by responding but new posters can’t see the deleted threads and shouldn’t be misled by JoyousGreyOrca’s claims.

I would expect anyone posting something racist to be banned.

We regularly see posters here claiming that criticism of M is driven by racist, so anything negative about M gets cast as racism.

Thedom · 26/01/2025 17:03

I agree, there were a few posters who were on a rampage, for a time, of accusing anyone and everyone of being racist. It was pretty vile and the bullying was horrendous, there was no discussion about anything, they just wanted to bring everything back to accusations of racism. Thankfully they have disappeared elsewhere for the most part.

TheCrowPeople · 26/01/2025 17:33

Serenster · 26/01/2025 11:35

David Sherborne will be repeating his speech that this is a “stunning victory” surely?

Meanwhile, back in the real world, and away from the claimants’ hyperbole, other stakeholders recognise that the case did not have the impact they were hoping for. The following is from the Press Recognition Panel - an independent body set up following the Leveson enquiry to ensure that regulators of the press are independent, properly funded and able to protect the public.

I agree, and always have, that we need a proper Press regulator that will monitor their activities while respecting their important function - but cannot see that happening. (I said exactly that to a former Fleet Street editor once and he pretty much laughed at me!)

Thanks, @Serenster. That's very interesting and quite a nugget of reputable information & opinion.

I am a WOC, and had to delete my profile because Sussex fans were trying to dox me. Apparently, people like me aren't allowed to have minds of our own.

NotaRealHousewife · 26/01/2025 20:30

@FromTheOfficeOfJammyTodger I'm sorry, that's awful

BasiliskStare · 26/01/2025 20:34

@Serenster - Thank you for that and explaining things to a lay person ( me )
I don't blame Harry for settling. I do blame him for doing it so late and wasting court time . I bet he wished he'd kept a bit quieter before hand - less dragon slayer perhaps more Don Quixote.

The court case I do have some interest in is the RAVEC case . This will cost the Govt and the Met police real money if I understand correctly. I think H has been offered a decent compromise from what I have read.

Oh, thank you, you are kind. I came back after a good long break - glutton for punishment! But a strangely aggressive and somewhat unnerving episode, nevertheless.

I have. Many a time. But only when threads about royals are started outside the royal board. Sometimes in aibu or chat

Not at all, I welcome different opinions and views, we can all learn from them. I don’t really enjoy the combative tone. Happy to leave it there.

Extiainoiapeial · 26/01/2025 22:24

Yes let's.
We can't all agree! 👍😊

Andtheweaselgoespop56 · 26/01/2025 22:33

I try and avoid the RF threads when they get really unpleasant but I do think that there have been several decent Republican posters who have been driven away by the sheer volume of condescending and rather sneary posts directed at them, for doing nothing but expressing a different opinion to the majority.

Some posters here may remember how an entire cabal of posters used to talk about or post pictures of cheese, or various memes, just to drown out republicans. Thankfully that seems to have stopped now. But it struck me as the on-line equivalent of playground tactics.

I think the threads have become a little more considered of late and certainly personal nastiness on any side of the argument is unnecessary and unwelcome.

Fair enough posters putting an argument quite forcefully, but not so good when someone responds with a personal attack without addressing the content of the post.

Hopefully the threads can become more civilised.
