With Love, Meghan - criticisms and genuine concern for her mental health

I am probably going to be flogged for posting this and chased down the dark laneways of Mumsnet as bystanders yell “Shame Shame Shame”.

I weighed in yesterday about a thread on Meghan and her new Netflix show. I made some criticisms about the trailer and certain cliche’s in the way it was produced. Hypocritical of me to be posting this but I feel guilty and have reflected. I am actually looking forward to watching it on Netflix and my criticisms were pretty minor and not exclusive to her show - it’s a common issue I have.

Meghan has struggled with mental health because of criticism. The reaction to ‘With Love… Meghan’ has been fairly brutal.

I think it would be really good if we refrained from saying anything negative about the series or Meghan Markle. That’s not the point of this thread.

I want to know if you think the criticisms have gone too far. The Princess of Wales is not on the scene and we are protective of her rightly so. That leaves Meghan as media fodder though.

Do you think it’s time Meghan and Harry were given a break ? I do. I think we’ve been far too harsh and the criticisms have gotten out of hand.

I think we also forget the cultural relevance. If we went into the homes or Gwyneth, Julia Roberts etc and I would probably feel the divide too. American culture doesn’t apologise for wealth and hollywoood is highly competitive.

Having a confident demeanour, throwing your head back Julia Roberts style when you laugh and unapologetically selling $$$ vagina products like Gwyneth Paltrow is how it over there. People talk loudly and confidently and are polished and rehearsed especially in the
Competitive world of Hollywood…

Are we all being too hard ?

I think the first episode will have good viewship but overall, I don’t think it will pull the hours of viewing needed for it to be worth the deal and I am guessing that they will part ways by the end of the year. I hope I’m wrong.

I said even many of those who don’t like her will watch, I didn’t say those will be the majority.

There is a market for trad wife aesthetic like Ballerina Farm (not me).

Netflix are quite savvy and know what their viewers want.

@MummyJ12 I agree that the first episode needs to be good in order to bring audiences back for the rest of the series- -that’s true of any show, of course.

I would genuinely like to see this project succeed, because it’s far better for them to be moving forward with new projects rather than talking about the past. It’s not my type of thing, but I hope that other people enjoy it.

Simply appearing on NF is not a guarantee of success. All the Sussex projects other than the 'documentary' have flopped. This may be more successful, if for the cringe value if nothing else, but I doubt it can save their contract.

Sugar is the term used for Meghan "superfans" who will defend her no matter what.

Absolutely right. I was also trying to say that the first episode will get good viewership because people will be curious and watch it for various reasons. Yes, of course if it’s good it will keep some viewership but I don’t think it will continue to achieve the “hours of viewing” throughout the 8 episodes and overall needed to keep the deal. Again, I hope I’m wrong. I just wish they had gone this positive direction from the start as she would have had the following to make it a success for sure.

I 100% doubt this is where she saw herself though. Faffing about with sponge cakes, and making flower arrangements. I think she envisioned herself a pioneer and a woman's embassador. I expect she saw herself being clamored for to give speeches at charities, and hobnobbing with the 'important people, doing important things'. It appears the fact that she has very little of value to say about any topic squashed that dream.

Doubt it. However keen viewers are on her, if the trailer is showing the highlights of the 8 episodes there's no way many people could watch that much boring dross. Even someone with a personality would struggle. Shame as it looks pretty! Very Stepford Wives girly lunch trad wife aesthetic. Which is so very Meghan as we know

For your information you don’t have to know someone to form an opinion of them particularly when they have laid bare their thoughts and feelings to the world through various channels. If we had to know everyone personally to have an opinion on them then that means no one can have an opinion on anyone ever, I haven’t met Boris Johnson but I think he is a bit of a buffoon because of the things he says and does, that’s how forming an opinion on public figures works, hopefully that will help you moving forward.

My favourite line was "meghan had the same fame as Kate". Yes, that's right. Number 6 on the call sheet of a little watched Canadian cable tv show. Number 6 that no one had heard of before the engagement interview. Very funny.

And that's the exact cultural difference right there. That's exactly why Meghan (& and any American possibly) would have struggled.

The RF are not, and have never been "celebrities". They end up being famous, but they serve a very specific constitutional function. Viewing joining the RF as a route to fame and celebrity will only guarantee failure and heartache.

Catherine has clearly never viewed that way, not has Sophie. That's why they are successful in their roles. (Sophie made some errors early on but seems to have got it right now).

Citizens of countries who do not have Constitutional Monarchies seem to really struggle with this concept of "fame" but not being "celebrities".
