The royal family

With Love, Meghan - criticisms and genuine concern for her mental health

1000 replies

Lavenderfarmcottage · 05/01/2025 16:34

I am probably going to be flogged for posting this and chased down the dark laneways of Mumsnet as bystanders yell “Shame Shame Shame”.

I weighed in yesterday about a thread on Meghan and her new Netflix show. I made some criticisms about the trailer and certain cliche’s in the way it was produced. Hypocritical of me to be posting this but I feel guilty and have reflected. I am actually looking forward to watching it on Netflix and my criticisms were pretty minor and not exclusive to her show - it’s a common issue I have.

Meghan has struggled with mental health because of criticism. The reaction to ‘With Love… Meghan’ has been fairly brutal.

I think it would be really good if we refrained from saying anything negative about the series or Meghan Markle. That’s not the point of this thread.

I want to know if you think the criticisms have gone too far. The Princess of Wales is not on the scene and we are protective of her rightly so. That leaves Meghan as media fodder though.

Do you think it’s time Meghan and Harry were given a break ? I do. I think we’ve been far too harsh and the criticisms have gotten out of hand.

I think we also forget the cultural relevance. If we went into the homes or Gwyneth, Julia Roberts etc and I would probably feel the divide too. American culture doesn’t apologise for wealth and hollywoood is highly competitive.

Having a confident demeanour, throwing your head back Julia Roberts style when you laugh and unapologetically selling $$$ vagina products like Gwyneth Paltrow is how it over there. People talk loudly and confidently and are polished and rehearsed especially in the
Competitive world of Hollywood…

Are we all being too hard ?

Like all women - she has the right to be ambitious. If that means being known for acting or blogging, charity work or whatever.

She doesn’t need your permission.

Then she will have to accept people will have opinions of her and they won’t all be positive. She was foolish to expose her spiteful character when she did Oprah and The Cut. If she can’t stand the heat then get out of the rented kitchen.

I seriously hope you don't really have anything to do in RL with people who have mental health issues.

Of course - opinions are inevitable.
However there is a difference between sharing an opinion and bullying.

When Harry announced they were leaving U.K. I think many thought they were going to live a quiet life on a ranch somewhere- To get away from the press, and to live a quiet life with horses and dogs .

Seems that was far from the truth.
I think Harry probably could live quietly, but not her.

That’s exactly what I thought because that’s the vibe they were giving off. I supported them when they went to the US, but then I realised he was a whiny manchild and she was a spiteful mean girl. I was genuinely happy for them on their wedding day but it turned out they weren't who I thought they were.

MooFroo · 05/01/2025 19:00

She is only as famous as she is because she married Harry and into the Royal Family.

Acting wise, she was a side character in one TV show - I have no other idea what else she acted in.

If they wanted fame and attention then they should have played their part in the RF and made the most of it.

People are only interested in Harry because he’s Royal family - only he’s no longer actively in that role so is pimping himself out to any bidder - forget the highest bidder!

I don’t like the desperation around them wanting to be in the public eye, when apparently they wanted their privacy.

I don’t feel sorry for either of them.

Sorry, who do you think you are? Do you realise how ignorant you yourself are coming across regarding mental health issues?

I'd give them a break if they didn't court the media so much. The South Park episode of them really did have it right.
I agree with a pp who said they don't know how MM copes as she does seem to reap far more than she sows. In her shoes I'd simply enjoy my family and keep my business behind closed doors, or at least closed celebrity doors. It seems she does this for a period of time, people move on, then wham she's back out trying to publicise herself again.

Thing is, her "attractiveness window" is rapidly closing. She needs to sell her brand before she is overtaken by the beautiful younger members of the RF. The media will soon be full of the doings of Louise (interesting that she has never courted any publicity, just got on with her life and studies, so it can be done), Charlotte, and of course the handsome boys of both families. There will be no room for articles about a faded, talentless and fundamentally unpleasant woman desperately trying to cling on to her remaining youth and relevance.

“Attractiveness window” (WTF?) makes me think of Amy Schumer’s “Last fuckable day” sketch:

All I’ll say is that I think England needs to give her a break. I think it’s time to just have an open mind.

Imagine being Harry and your brother has millions and millions and owns the sea and ambulance 🚑 sheds or whatever they.

Meanwhile 🤴 🥕 has to woo a Hollywood actress and break it to her that his palace is infact a 2 bedroom cottage.

If I were already a self made millionaire actress I’d be out, if I’m being honest.

I don’t know if I’d be standing behind a white woman on a balcony, who does the same job as me and accepting that she gets way more perks, money and financial freedom. It wouldn’t work.

What has the colour of Princess Katherine's skin got to do with this?

It’s Hollywood though isn't it. That’s the shallow, vacuous world she wants to be in.

IcedPurple · 05/01/2025 19:05

But I do wonder what it’s like being her at times, and I would hate to wake up to a barrage of criticism.

To continue what I wrote in an above post, nobody has loudspeakers delivering a 'barrage of criticism' through the windows of Montecito Manor as the Duchess rises from her restorative slumber and sips her Clevr blend in her beige kitchen.

All public figures, especially women unfortunately, receive criticism. Some of it valid, some of it ridiculous, though where to draw the line is subjective. If these people have any sense, they'll learn to stop Googling themselves. tune out from all the social media chatter and let their publicist handle any major stories.

You can't control what others say about you. You can only control how you deal with it. If Meghan engages with the 'barrage of criticism' that is a choice she has freely made. If it's all too much for her, she has the option of withdrawing from public life. So I see no reason to feel sorry for her.

I'm not saying I work in mental health and then putting someone's mental health in quotation marks and calling them "snotty liars.'

Matronic6 · 05/01/2025 19:08

I think both things can be true, they have received a lot of negative attention but they are producing content that is just a bit crap. The main issue being neither of them has the experience or talent to actually back up their current projects. They see MM as stealing other peoples ideas as she hasn't down the groundwork to define her style the way other people who would be doing these sorts of shows will have. It may well be her personal style but people have no idea as she hasn't established her style in anyway.

I do actually think it was MM's intentions to go this route all along. The fact she invited George Clooney, his wife and Oprah Winfrey to their wedding despite not knowing them was the tell.

Wheresthebeach · 05/01/2025 19:11

They are both publicity hounds who want the World to see them as brave victims. Narcs the pair of them

What on earth are "sea and ambulance sheds" @Lavenderfarmcottage?

Well, the sea is the sea: big wet thing that surrounds Great Britain.

The ambulance sheds refers to the NHS renting space from the Duchy of Cornwall to store its ambulances.

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 05/01/2025 19:18

BemusedAmerican · 05/01/2025 18:46

@PeggyMitchellsCameo The RF made an elderly relative move out of the 20 room apartment in Kensington Palace next door to Prince William to renovate it for Harry and Meghan. Then when they didn't want the apartment, they renovated a very large house that I, for one, would not call a cottage. The kitchen alone in Frogmore appears to be bigger than my living room. I'm sure they were given input into the renovation. I would happily spend a year in Nott Cottage knowing that my dream home would be ready for me.

If you put up a trailer, then you have to deal with the reaction. Harry's trailer for "Polo" got horrible reviews. No one is watching his show. People don't seem to be worrying about his mental health.

I agree about Nott Cott I mean they don’t live in the real world! I meant more she thought she was getting a palace of her own and ended up down the royal residential list!
I tried really hard in my post to write some points that forced me to humanise someone I don’t like and have little respect for.
To me, there’s something that lacks a sense of the genuine. She seems to have been trying too hard her whole life and it just doesn’t work.
There is one person I would love a cuppa and a chat with - Angela Kelly! If she were allowed to be candid and could be assured not a detail would leave the room.
I would love to hear her stories of what life was like working with the late Queen, being her confidante, and all of the Tiara-gate rumblings!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 05/01/2025 19:19

I agree with more than one PP - for two people who apparently want privacy, they sure make a lot of noise.

I think the "white woman" is meant to be the Queen.

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 05/01/2025 19:20

I see Meghan Markle as being just the same as that Lily Phillips girl, except Phillips is younger and more naïve, while Meghan is a middle aged woman with 2 kids who ought to know a bit better by now.

You put yourself on public display and court fame, no matter how you do it, you have invited whatever reaction the public give.

They are both damaged in their distasteful attempts to make money while they pretend they matter and they both bought the fallout on themselves.

Both are really only known internationally for who they have sex with.

Herewegoagain84 · 05/01/2025 19:21

They’ve entirely opened themselves up to this I’m afraid. If they’d had their misgivings and quietly moved away to the States to enjoy their lives together there, fine. But no - they’ve caused as much drama and attempted to attract as much attention as possible. Honestly they’ve behaved like ridiculous teenagers. They’re fair game in my eyes.

BemusedAmerican · 05/01/2025 19:22

I agree with you about Angela Kelly. I'd love to learn about Tiara-gate from her perspective.

What blew my mind about Meghan was when I read she wanted to move into Windsor Castle. That struck me as nervy and naive.

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 05/01/2025 19:22

I love the fact she bollocked on about that letter she wrote when she was wee - "women don't belong in the kitchen" and promoted the shit out of that for ages. And now - here we are: flowery shite in the kitchen.

Thank you, Bunnylake. That is precisely the point I was making!! The media, Hollywood, the Buyers of Magazines are interested only in a person's looks and sellability. Do you really think that as a going-on-75-year-old crone I would be ageist and misogynist?? The truth is that royalty sells, looks sell, youth sells, but royalty, youth and looks sell to the max.

Like it or not, it's the truth.
