Ouch that's got to touch a nerve for the Sussexes ! I did notice that VB was respectfully dressed as was only right for the occasion.

Why on earth were they there? Still after his knighthood, clearly.

Probably because anyone with any taste had a prior engagement. I wonder if it was a last-minute invitation. Beckham's hair needed a trim and the stubble and neck tattoo don't work with the white tie dress code. VB is clearly not at ease. Her really clingy black dress is more Hollywood royalty than real royalty.

I hope Kemi Badenoch took the opportunity to promote women's rights.

mitogoshigg · 04/12/2024 08:13

@Blewprint

It's not the wealthy white expats that have issues, it's the system of visas for domestic workers, builders etc who have their passports removed, aren't paid fair wages and are abused by their employers plus high accident rates. Speak to ngo's from the countries they recruit from and you quickly understand the truth about that so called safe society. Throughout the Gulf area there are similar problems not just Qatar

With all the money they have I'm always 🙄 that the Beckhams don't just quietly enjoy their lives instead of endlessly chasing fame.
He really didn't need to do the Qatar world cup, not only because of the utter lack of women's rights but also because of the sheer amount of people who died getting that stadium up.
He didn't care. He's too busy chasing the Knighthood.

They always strike me as deeply unhappy. I bet poor Victoria has had a miserable life with that vain little mans endless cheating.

Endless cheating?

One affair hit the headlines.Isnt anything else (by both of them) just rumour?

Just wondering, if Anna Wintour was invited to a state banquet do you think she’d take her sunglasses off?

Good question.

No.

Lifestooshort71 · 04/12/2024 08:20

Their turning up will have meant far, far more to the girl with the new wheelchair and indeed to the local paper - which probably got the most amazing, precious, bump in sales and thus to its revenues - than to the Beckhams fgs.
'A shame?' Am not inherently a fan but come on. You cannot claim this was anything but them doing an amazing thing for their local community at the time.
This was many years ago when he was still a footballer and she was struggling to find her brand and they were seen out and about locally - they were hovering at the bottom of the greasy pole of fame. Yes, grateful for the wheelchair but I'm not sure the young girl cared 2 hoots about a photo on page 4 of a local independent! This was definitely the Beckham's getting themselves noticed on the climb to A-list celebrity status - difficult to understand probably.

Blinky21 · 04/12/2024 08:30

Doubt the Sussexes give a shit.

AlohaRose · 04/12/2024 08:34

Saw them on the news last night, she looked overwhelmed by the whole occasion walking in. Then there was a bit of footage of him listening to the speeches during which he seemed to be gurning or trying to remove food from his teeth or something. They certainly didn't look at home.

Definitely after his knighthood. He’s so transparent.

Why indeed - why on earth are we rolling out the red carpet for Qatar?

Corrupt country supports corrupt country shocker.

The UK is hardly innocent.

I’m assuming if we had a President instead of a King we would still be paying for this State occasion @OptimisticMermaid

Yes but we would have voted them in. Not just some random family some (gullible) commoners fawn over.

Of course she did!
I had my photo in the local paper with a now disgraced former politician when I was about 9 and it made my year. Still got the cutting in my parents’ photo album!

Looks like some of you need to catch up on current news.

"current news"

I don't think your post ticks any of those boxes

Arlanymor · 04/12/2024 00:02

He's still angling for a knighthood then...

Its mutual - Beckham has been angling for the next honour for yonks, he is part of the "pack" of celebs which the Royals like to be seen with to appear vaguely relevant.
But yes in this case obviously the entire state visit and banquet was all arranged to poke the Sussexes in the eye.

As to why we are "playing nice" with a regime which regards human rights as some kind of optional extra, to be dispensed with when convenient (like the slave labour when building stadiums) - well the answer is easy. ££££££££

Maybe the purpose is to discuss

Not everything needs to be seen through a prism of hate, Try it!

I want to know whose idea it was to put David next to the Leader of the Opposition

I think that the OP is looking at Harry and Meghan through a 'prism of hate', otherwise why mention them? They weren't at the State dinner and haven't expressed an opinion on the State dinner, so what is there to discuss?

Wintersgirl · 04/12/2024 08:45

Blinky21 · 04/12/2024 08:30

Doubt the Sussexes give a shit.

Lucky escape if you ask me, those state dinners look really boring....

YourWildAmberSloth · 04/12/2024 08:46

The Sussexes aren't current news, and I doubt if they give a shit tbh. This constant need to drag H&M into every story is ridiculous.

stripeyshutters · 03/12/2024 23:59

Looks like some of you need to catch up on current news.

What news? The Beckham's were invited to an event what has it got to do with H&M?

Did they always thry wanted an invite? Did they say they were upset or bothered?

Or is another 'let's turn an event into something we can bring them into it even if it is irrelevant'

Sunholidays · 04/12/2024 08:54

2024onwardsandup · 03/12/2024 23:56

Is this for Qatar? Am I missing something? Aren’t women’s human rights totally trashed in Qatar? Why is there a state dinner?

You’ll have to ask the Foreign secretary that

FlabbergastedByTheGorgons · 04/12/2024 07:22

DB was invited because of his links to Qatar.

Agree he is still DESPERATE for his knighthood. Calling the honours committee ungrateful cunts won't be forgotten quickly though.

I recommend Tom Bower's book on the Beckhams for anyone interested.

What did he conclude?

Tealeavesinthecup · 04/12/2024 09:09

The whole event was a disgrace and the Beckhams being there underlined its ludicrousness. I hope Camilla did object on moral grounds.

The clip on the News at 10 just now showed Victoria looking painfully uncomfortable. She saw the camera and looked petrified and grabbed David’s hand.

Really? The clips I’ve seen she grabs his hand as she spots the camera, most likely as if there was a picture of them walking separately the papers would be “Beckhams divorcing” the next morning!
They are a couple who have actively chosen a life in the spotlight, she didn’t look the slightest bit petrified or uncomfortable imo.

What difference does her objection make if she’s sat there dining on pheasant?

You don’t get to claim any moral hierarchy from a token objection.

Patienceinshortsupply · 04/12/2024 09:20

She grabbed his hand and smiled straight to camera. "No issues in this marriage, see".

The online gossip boards however tell a very different story.

These state dinners are paid for by us. In our name.

Dread to think how much it cost.
