Ouch that's got to touch a nerve for the Sussexes ! I did notice that VB was respectfully dressed as was only right for the occasion.

Qatar paid Beckham a fortune to support their world cup. Qatar paid Charlie at least 3m that we know of. H&m are nothing to do with this state banquet being held for this corrupt government.

OptimisticMermaid · 04/12/2024 03:17

I was going to say you are using the Boris johnson trick of throw a dead cat on the table. But I hate that expression as I love my cat. What I mean is that h&m are nothing to do with this

Serenster · 04/12/2024 03:33

OptimisticMermaid · 04/12/2024 02:48

That 3m was being sneaked in and only declared once that paper discovered it.

Well, the donor, the charity, Charles and the receiving bank all knew about the donation obviously. Why and where do you think it should have been declared?

OptimisticMermaid · 04/12/2024 03:36

So i can go to a government, assuming the influence Charlie has, and say give me 3m but don’t be transferring it through normal means. Give me it in plastic bags (fortnum and masons) and a wee suitcase and I’ll get it through customs for you. And that would be ok?

OptimisticMermaid · 04/12/2024 03:37

Mr serenster you obviously don’t work for a large corporation 😉

Serenster is a lady and very knowledgeable on the RF!

OptimisticMermaid · 04/12/2024 03:41

apologies for the misgender. Definitely no offence meant.

OptimisticMermaid · 04/12/2024 03:43

Definitely the fortnum and masons bag with the 1m in cash has caught me with a bit a healthy cynicism. Not the way normal honest people do business with the corrupt governments of this world.

Nextweektoo · 04/12/2024 03:48

They are in this country's top 10 investors. So part of the family really!

OptimisticMermaid · 04/12/2024 03:54

I think it's come to the point that we all have to just accept the world is massively corrupt and nothing we can do about it. Oh well.

BettyBlueSky · 04/12/2024 04:15

OptimisticMermaid · 04/12/2024 01:37

Fortnum and masons carrier bag. So that’s alright!

Yes. Got to keep it classy.

HappydaysArehere · 04/12/2024 04:38

Evencloserties · 04/12/2024 00:06

Petrified? Painful? What ridiculous observations

Well she looked uncertain and nervous. Certainly faltered when she saw the cameraman.

Ah, you mean did Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim declare the money to customs when he arrived into the UK? But how do you know he didn’t? Because he could well have, but that be public information.

He also could have withdrawn the money from a bank in the UK - obviously, you’d have to give the bank notice but perfectly possible. Or he could have brought it into the UK via the Diplomatic Bag, given he was formerly Prime Minister of Qatar. In which case no declarations are necessary.

You're wrong in all your assumptions about me, actually.

Blewprint · 04/12/2024 05:06

Following this, as it's been all over the news here in Qatar. I moved here last year and am surprised to see some generalised negatively towards Qatar.

I love living here, along with huge numbers of British Expats, many of whom have been here for many, many years.

It is not an apartheid state for women. In my experience, women are treated very respectfully and are afforded their rights.

The biggest difference I feel living here is that I feel more free and safe. I'm not planning my routes or worrying about my safety on a night out, for example. I will walk out at any time without clutching my keys between my fingers, I don't have to have that constant, low level dread in the back of my mind. I don't worry so much about the safety of my children.

This realisation really set in during a midnight stroll on a secluded beach a few months in. I was free to enjoy the sea and the sky without worrying about who was lurking in the shadows. This is when I actually realised that I fear the danger posed by other people more than naturally occurring dangers.

What I can't do here is wear tiny shorts to the mall. As a couple, we can't be physically intimate in public, they don't want their children witnessing this - fair enough. Society here is very family centred and things are designed with children in mind, I'm happy to forgo the above to respect local customs because the welcome my children receive wherever we go is invaluable. There is a huge amount in terms of arts, cultural activities etc both for grown-ups and for families.

What I'm trying to express is that there are so many good points to society here, people are so friendly and keen to help.

I am adding balance to what has been said. I've enjoyed being removed from the bubble of UK news and finding out more about the world.

CurlewKate · 04/12/2024 05:42

Pretty sure this repellent grovel-fest was not staged as a one in the eye for H&M.

I'm glad you're having a nice time, @Blewprint .Obviously, many Qatari women aren't. And not just because they can't wear "tiny shorts" to the mall.

Superhansrantowindsor · 04/12/2024 06:40

I am disgusted that such pomp and ceremony was laid on for Qatar. Surely there are more worthy recipients of such an honour?

MissTrip82 · 04/12/2024 06:46

I don’t really understand why the opening post seems to be having a nasty dig at the Sussexes and Victoria Beckham. Of course she’s dressed respectfully - is she usually not? And why would the Sussexes be upset by this?

Again I remind you if you dislike these people so much it is very very easy to stay away from news about them. Why fill your head with nasty thoughts about total strangers you can easily avoid.

Jostuki · 04/12/2024 06:48

The royal family should not be hosting the Emir of Qatar and feting him. Qatar is corrupt and has poor human rights.

Pedallleur · 04/12/2024 06:57

stripeyshutters · 04/12/2024 00:12

Mind you I can't imagine her enjoying her dinner partners very well.

"Mrs Beckham, a former Spice Girl and fashion designer, sat between Labour peer Lord Levy and surgeon and former health minister Lord Darzi of Denham."

Or Mrs Beckham, former pop star, successful fashion designer and entrepreneur, wife of former footballer/England captain, global brand icon and entrepreneur David Beckham.

alwaysontheloo · 04/12/2024 06:59

With all the money they have I'm always 🙄 that the Beckhams don't just quietly enjoy their lives instead of endlessly chasing fame.
He really didn't need to do the Qatar world cup, not only because of the utter lack of women's rights but also because of the sheer amount of people who died getting that stadium up.
He didn't care. He's too busy chasing the Knighthood.

They always strike me as deeply unhappy. I bet poor Victoria has had a miserable life with that vain little mans endless cheating.

Somehow it doesn't work like that with State visits. Yes Minister had an episode like that when Hacker has to meet the President of an African country

OptimisticMermaid · 04/12/2024 01:31

We need to just not remember that? And i object to any government entertaining the Qatar state.

Good job you are not a head of state then vwith your 6th form politics!

He's still angling for a knighthood then...

Quite. Which hopefully he will never get.

The Beckhams used to shop in my local M&S. one time I was there they were stood smiling for over an hour while kids took photos and signed autographs.

I don’t think some people understand that the RF host whoever the government says they host. Whether they like it or not. They are effectively civil servants. Albeit handsomely paid ones!
