The royal family

I saw that

I am disgusted and no, I did not watch it

NetballHoop · 22/11/2024 09:56

Well Trump's inauguration was estimated to have cost between $175 million and $200 million so I'd say we got off lightly.

Personally I think the Coronation did require some sort of "occasion" around it. However, it was the perfect opportunity for the new King to change the rules and make the whole thing simpler but with more meaning IYSWIM. Thus endearing 😎his "subjects" to him by his actions in making things less Grandiose.

But no, the ego of this lot is beyond compare. But at the end of the day it is at OUR expense so none of them care beyond the pomp and unnecessary ceremony around events like this.

TBH I can understand the cost of a solemn funeral for a monarch. No gold carriages there though and ermine and diamonds that we paid for either.

There's no solution unless KC wants it. He said he would, but he didn't. So I am annoyed with "Ego Head" big TIME!

beguilingeyes · 22/11/2024 10:01

I'd like to have seen the end of the whole edifice after QE2 died. That Channel documentary made me so angry. Them and all the Dukes that own most of this country and charge us to use it.
It's feudal and ridiculous.

CathyorClaire · 22/11/2024 10:08

Worth reminding ourselves this was the second royal knees-up we funded within a year and we had a massively costly funeral bill to pay on top too.

They take us for mugs and they are right.

BuzzieLittleBee · 22/11/2024 10:11

I don't have strong views on this one way or the other - but it equates to a little over £1 per head for everyone in the UK.
Or put another way, less than 0.05% of the money raised from VAT alone.
Or to compare it with another waste of money - around 0.1% of the estimated cost of HS2 (which will undoubtedly end up costing way more than the estimate)

So the headline figure might sound a lot, but it's a drop in the ocean really.

commonground · 22/11/2024 10:14

'dressing-up day' 😂👏

Just because we waste money on other stuff as a country doesn't make it right o spaff literally millions on one bloke's ego day

The singing in the Abbey was fabulous. It was worth every penny.

They could have streamed it from Spotify 😊

@Notmoog well it only cost that person £1

The point is that Trump was elected. Anyone born in America can become President. Here in the UK, you can only become King or Queen if you are born into the Royal family.

And let's not forget that Charles had the final say over everything and chose to get the Republican protestors arrested.

Notmoog · 22/11/2024 10:30

this is what frustrates me.
An obscene amount of money wated and some people think it's fine because we overspend on other things or because the singing was nice.
Bread and circuses

The singing in the Abbey was fabulous. It was worth every penny.

Charles commissioned twelve new pieces for the day. Twelve! All to be shoehorned into what we were told was to be a 'streamlined' service.

There is still no clarity on who paid for them but given we now find he's skimming national institutions and charities alongside his own armed forces it's not unreasonable to suppose it wasn't him.

Notmoog · 22/11/2024 10:40

well as he didn't put his hand in his pockets for his own mother's funeral ........

Ok..if it cost so little per head…I’ll take 1p from every citizen (we are NOT subjects!)
so that I can have a right old knees up!
surely no one will miss 1p?
Maybe the can give another 1p to pay for my funeral and a bloody good wake for the family afterwards?

I dint watch any of this royal debacle….did Elton do another turn?

StormingNorman · 22/11/2024 10:48

All of this £72 million would have gone straight back into the economy providing work and custom for businesses. A huge amount would have gone into public services like policing too.

Lemonadeand · 22/11/2024 10:49

It’s a historic event, not a “dressing up day”. Just because it’s meaningless to you, doesn’t mean it’s objectively meaningless.

Personally I’m in favour of a middle ground with a more low key royal family, similar to some of the other European countries.

StormingNorman · 22/11/2024 10:50

I guess what I’m trying to say is the £72m didn’t go to the royal family, it went to thousands of worker bees and businesses in the economy.

CathyorClaire · 22/11/2024 10:51

Also worth noting there's a royal veto over what can now be shown of the hat party on MSM including our own public service broadcaster:

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/may/05/revealed-royal-family-has-power-to-censor-bbc-coronation-coverage

Disgraceful.

crumblingschools · 22/11/2024 10:59

@Gall10 to be fair many people do get money from other taxpayers and in fact there is a funeral payment you can claim if you qualify

A bloke with £2billion isn't going to need a hardship fund to pay for his mum's funeral. Tight bastard

Frankly, a bargain. It's not even a particularly large amount. Most of it was security costs, protecting guests, world leaders etc. We have a monarchy, it costs us very little - but a presidency would probably be no different.
