£20 million a year just to police football matches. Everything costs something. A coronation is a national (international even) event. How about all the sporting events we host? Olympics, football, tennis, athletics etc etc. Millions.

crumblingschools · 22/11/2024 12:25

Do other countries not have rich landowners?

What have the rf actually achieved apart from skimming huge wads of cash off the struggling public.

It's always an estimate, or a guess. What makes you so confident?

All of economy has s pretty much an estimate 🤷🏻‍♀️

But in this case, they can see how many more hotel bookings there are, how many more flights. From previous data they can estimate how much tourists spend a day etc.
Yes it's an estimate but usually pretty close to the actual numbers.

not ones that the general public directly finance to the tune of t£100 million a year and counting, no.

But it was 70 years since the last one.

So they don't always crop up that often.

And it is literally once in a generation unless someone advocates. Given that a monarch dies to make way for the next generation..

Maybe we could do a cost per wear type calc. on the coronation.

My good friend google says the queens coronation in Jul 1953 would cost the equivalent of £54 585 990 in 2024 (cost in 1953 was 1560000 so 22527/yr of reign, converts to 788243 today)

If we take the £72 000 000 for Charley boys coronation he's got to reign for over 90 years to give us the same value(?) for money. What are the chances?

If the population of USA is about 335 million (thanks google), that only makes it 60 cents a head, with the exchange rate on google today that's 48p, so less than half the price- bargain.

So if Charles lasts 10 years the spending per head of population is about the same (2 1/2 presidential inaugurations)?

Most countries have ceremonies to mark occasions such as a change of head of state. I don't think the cost of a ceremony is much of an argument for or against any particular constitutional model.

And while I agree that in general it is difficult to pinpoint the effect of the RF on tourism in general, in this case there does seem to be evidence of tourists coming for this specific ceremony.

£1 per person per year, is hardly skimming off the struggling public though is it??

well when i don't want to give a penny it is.
When they don't pay the same taxes as the rest of us it is.
When they use the position to make shady financial deals it is

at least he was elected into the position and his great great great grandchild won't become president by default

Except it happens every 4 years vs twice in the last 70 years (let's say 3 times in 90 years to account for William's too). So actually many times more expensive!

I agree OP, "better by birth" is embarrassing in 2024. They're kind of nothing, just rich landowners. Not the best looking, strongest, bravest, richest, cleverest, most virtuous etc. They personally have no attributes which would lead them and their offspring to be placed in some exalted position above the rest of the British public forever. Baffling that some still buy into it.

an you really not see the difference between people being elected into a position and those in the royal family who do shag all except take our money?
And we have had a fair few PM's in this country from very normal backgrounds so not sure why you're talking about us presidents.
