Part 1, I thought it was a really insightful and thought provoking documentary, very well produced and some impressive people working tirelessly to support the homeless community.

William came across as passionate and very articulate, knowledgeable without appearing to be preaching. A great cause and hopefully will be successful, it's great he is working so closely with those who are on the front line daily trying to make a difference.

He looks so like Diana, not only his appearance but his mannerisms and expressions, could have been watching and listening to Diana at times.

Don't know how it will do on Disney+ though, it is very UK specific, an unsexy subject and I am sure they will have to add subtitles in places.

Yes 24 units are totes going to solve homelessness in Cornwall

Spectre8 · 03/11/2024 07:44

Well now surprised really the monarchy have special laws that mean they dont pay tax on their private earnings 🙄

They both earned £20m+ a yr from their Duchy yet their are people in rented homes that aren't legally energy efficient but they get away with it. Being head of them they will have known but hey so long as they make their millions why do they even care about their subjects to fix the problem or not rent them out until it's fixed.

EdithWeston · 03/11/2024 07:50

I don’t have any problem with eg the NHS paying a fair rent to any landlord.

Is the insinuation here that he’s price gouging, or that he’s doing wrong because NHS should always be paying below market rents for properties they use but don’t own?

(If the latter has this been raised on the ‘how would you save the NHS?’ thread as a measure - it could have a major impact)

Thedom · 03/11/2024 07:51

So they will evict tenants, possibly make them homeless, so they can upgrade the homes to make them more energy efficient ??. Plenty of us live in energy inefficient old homes, plenty of multi million £ listed buildings throughout the U|K are and will remain energy inefficient.

I expect any new homes being built will comply with the current standards on energy efficiency.

I haven't seen the programme yet, so only responding to a comment above.

If I was spearheading a campaign on ending homelessness I would simply ensure I wasn't a slum landlord myself before getting started.

Gorgonemilezola · 03/11/2024 08:12

So much hyperbole.

They are using loopholes like this one: the Duchy has applied just 10 times for exemptions and the most common reason, used four times, was that the work would cost more than £3,500 to complete.

Why? They made £20m+ each of those Duchy estates. Do they not care about people living in cold homes? To use the its costs too much reason is disgusting given how much money they earn. Then you have prince william wanting to end homelessness yet he can't even put his hand in his pocket and provide warm houses for his tenants.

A slumlord fighting homelessness. What a time.

Highly embarrassing for the RF and PW what has come out about the mouldy houses. A few days earlier he was talking about ending homelessness I suggest he gets his own houses in order first. Funny how the regular fawning posters have gone quiet since this has come out. Normally they are posting on multiple threads on the RF board at once.

If it had been the other pair we would be on the 2nd thread by now

BustingBaoBun · 03/11/2024 09:07

Well indeed. 14% of William's Duchy homes have an energy rating below E the legal rate of Energy efficiency
He needs to get his own house in order I agree. The article I saw showing the damp mould and awful conditions some of his tenants have to put up with 😮

There is no justification for this, given the massive income Charles and William take from these Duchies, refusing to disclose how much income tax they pay on this and both duchies not paying business taxes i.e. capital gains and corporation tax. Unlike any other business in the UK

GrouchyKiwi · 03/11/2024 09:15

100% they should be ensuring their tenants live in comfortable, healthy homes.

downwindofyou · 03/11/2024 09:21

Gosh. No idea why my comment was deleted. I've never had one deleted before. First time for everything I guess.

Interesting that the comment was aimed at the RF and their lack of paying MILLIONS in taxes.

And suggesting that admiration for this family is peculiarly questionable

downwindofyou · 03/11/2024 09:22

But yeah. Doff your cap at the billionaire claiming to want to help when even a single year of paying proper tax could elevate the lives of so many 😑

I wonder if Charles and William actually know what’s going on a lot of the time. I suspect their employees manage nearly everything and they just sign off on things. William has little involvement with the Duchy now I thought. Perhaps the documentary will make them get down there and actually see what’s going on.

I didn't report your comment but - if it's the one I'm thinking of - I'm not surprised it went.
It read like a "personal attack" as MN call it and they're not allowed.
You told a poster, iirc, that they have very few brain cells and, again iirc, added in a couple of other bits of name calling.
Sorry if yours was a different comment and I've remembered wrongly.

namechange1975 · 03/11/2024 09:32

If Charles and wills don't know what is going on then perhaps it was about time wills started working full time and actually did something. All this crap about him not working school holidays because he wants his children to have a normal upbringing. What's normal about having 4 homes worth millions and living on taxpayers money. Before the Kate brigade come out and start saying he is supporting his cancer stricken wife what was he doing the 10 years before that? Both working part time as they had small children to bring up oops I forgot about the dozens of staff they had to help with every aspect of their life.

I would like to think they do know what is going on. They both take £25M plus from these Duchies. William appointed his friend, George's godparent, to help run things down there and there are media reports he is in touch regularly by whatsapp. That could just be nonsense of course.

It just seems to me that, as normal, they react when there is bad press. But everything else is brushed under the carpet when no one is reporting on it.

If I was living in a Duchy property that was mouldy and damp, I would be pretty pissed off that William is taking all the good headlines for 24 new houses on his land to 'tackle homelessness'.

It does really expose the whole charade for what it is. A whole family living off the taxpayer really whilst pretending to ‘work’.

DaphneduM · 03/11/2024 09:46

An interesting juxtaposition between William's 'efforts' to solve homelessness and the Channel 4 dispatches/Times article.

I actually do think King Charles, when he was POW did a lot of good work - Princes Trust particularly. It has helped so many young people get a start and chance in life. Also he did champion environmental concerns way before it became mainstream.

However I'm actually cynical about Prince William and his 'work'. His number of engagements (or lack of) speak for themselves. This 'working behind the scenes' that we so often hear as an excuse doesn't cut it, bearing in mind their extreme privilege and amount of taxpayer funding the family.

I wonder what the royal family will look like under William? The age of deference is coming to an end - at best maybe indifference from the public will actually save them?

Scandal of Prince William's mouldy, hard to heat royal rentals - that don't meet standards

https://archive.is/s5bHY

Yeah, about that. Properties do get damp and mouldy when the tenant refuses to put the heating on and refuses access to workmen to repair it.

BustingBaoBun · 03/11/2024 10:09

That must have taken some finding! Are you saying that all tenants are turning down necessary works?

^Conversations with several tenants who wished to remain nameless revealed their struggles living in these inadequately insulated properties, the majority lack central heating, with many dependent on costly solid fuels for warmth.
One tenant revealed: "It gets miserably cold especially in the winter, you can see through the roof. I can only heat two rooms in my home using a wood burner and a coal fire, and the landlord told me that my rent was going to be put up considerably if they put in radiators.^
