Part 1, I thought it was a really insightful and thought provoking documentary, very well produced and some impressive people working tirelessly to support the homeless community.

William came across as passionate and very articulate, knowledgeable without appearing to be preaching. A great cause and hopefully will be successful, it's great he is working so closely with those who are on the front line daily trying to make a difference.

He looks so like Diana, not only his appearance but his mannerisms and expressions, could have been watching and listening to Diana at times.

Don't know how it will do on Disney+ though, it is very UK specific, an unsexy subject and I am sure they will have to add subtitles in places.

That's because of how the British constitution works, though.

The monarch is the law

And as such not exempt, but completely above

Which, in my opinion, is wrong.

wordler · 01/11/2024 14:57

It’s not the royal family that are exempt from the laws- only the monarch - and it’s something like 160 laws in total - many of which seem to have been automatically included rather than requested including one about setting nuclear weapons off on private property.

I think the last time the Guardian did a deep dive was a couple of years ago before the Queen died - will be interesting to see if they all automatically transferred to Charles.

My apologies, I should have said monarch rather than RF. However, it doesn't detract from the fact that such exemptions benefit the RF and their interests as a whole. Many of the exemptions are indeed automatic but a great many are not and have been specifically requested. Your example of nuclear weapons is not entirely representative of these exemptions, many of which attest to the determined preservation (and indeed increase) of their wealth and privilege.

User135644 · 01/11/2024 15:14

It's a fixture of abject poverty, unaffordable housing and failed drug policies.

I’m assuming you are coming from a republican perspective and you’d rather not have a monarchy at all?

I prefer the constitutional monarchy system and as such don’t see a problem with the monarch as head of state being immune from certain laws if it protects the monarch as head of state.

However I do think there needs to be more transparency and more oversight on what legal protections are being given and why. I do disagree with the ones which seem purely to protect private business areas.

I'm not necessarily a republican, although I can't say I'm a fan of the RF either. Like you, I believe there should be absolute transparency. I further believe that exemption from laws purely to protect their already staggering wealth and privilege is clearly wrong. They cannot set a moral compass or pontificate on anything until this changes.

Anyone else thinking he looks depressed and unwell?

Anyone else thinking he looks depressed and unwell?

Not at all - just finished watching both parts and he seems very upbeat and enthusiastic about this project.

I wish Marianne Levy had watched both parts before writing her review - it seems like she completely missed the point of both the project and documentary.

It seems to be very well thought out in terms of targets and deliverables. It will be clear at the end of each year and at the end of the full five year project exactly what has improved or not compared to how much money etc has been invested.

I was so impressed by the key workers already working in this field that it highlighted - some very impressive women with such positive and supportive energy coming from them.

Because he is serious as opposed to being a fool?

No, he just looks tired and unwell.

Gorgonemilezola · 01/11/2024 18:15

Depressed and unwell? Not at all, he looks absolutely fine. Or is this one of those Dr Who/Harriet Jones 'Don' t you think she looks tired.... ' plots?

NoCarbsForMe · 01/11/2024 18:24

Really not a royalist here, but good for William! A very deserving cause.

I thought that!

Tardis

But of course that tack only works when deployed against a woman. Double standards on appearances.

Uricon2 · 01/11/2024 18:39

Given the year he's had, I think carrying on like he is is laudable. Yeah yeah, I know, moneypalacesprivilegenotarealjob, etc etc, but his father has cancer, as did his wife, the mother of his young children, all in the spotlight of the worlds speculation (some vile). I'm truly hoping that Charles is well on the mend, but the truth is that if he isn't, William's life will change forever. It will affect every aspect of that life, with no retirement to look forward to.

From the clips I've now seen he does indeed look fine, but some people seem unable to give him the same break they'd give to anyone dealing with his situation. When they talk about "Diana's boys", it would be great if they remembered she had 2 of them sometimes.

Sorry for the rant!

wordler · 01/11/2024 18:43

The people and projects which were highlighted that were most impressive to me were

Safiya Saeed, founder of the Reach Up Youth organization in Sheffield - I’d watch a whole documentary just about her.

The Single Homeless Project - the key worker Sophie from here had such great energy - really calm and healing and a lovely voice.

And the Housing First template they explained which doesn’t penalize people and throw them out of the programme if they aren’t totally sober.

Home - Single Homelessness Project

We are Single Homeless Project, a London-wide charity working to prevent homelessness and help Londoners transform their lives.

Thanks @wordler , a great cause for donations.

Maybe if we all did a little bit, what we could, William's ambitious aim would become closer to being realised.

Thedom · 01/11/2024 19:03

'Depressed and unwell"

Quite the opposite in fact, he came across as having a strong positive presence. He is very handsome and appeared confident and was very engaging, despite admitting to nervousness at one of the speaking engagements.

Prince William “Today, rough sleeping [and] homelessness ends. There will be no more homeless people in this country. The state will provide.”

Umm, I think you'll find that was said by Jeremy Corbyn, in The News Agents podcast, in November last year.

They are the words he would have said as his first words if he had been elected PM

wordler · 01/11/2024 19:49

I actually think the news reports have bungled the messaging - probably in pursuit of a catchy headline but William didn't claim that he could end homelessness in five years - he talked about wanting to end homelessness as a lifetime goal.

And then introduced the Homewards project which is designed to spend five years exploring potential solutions which would then potentially be used as templates for the different causes and management of homelessness in the UK.

No one else has tried to bring the charity sector, the business sector and private landlord issues under the same umbrella in this way before - it's a bit early to call it a failure - I'm not sure why he's getting such a hard time (apart from Republic which has its own agenda)

KingOfPoundbury · 01/11/2024 19:55

"We can end homelessness"

Except of course for Uncle Andrew, who we're trying to get out of one of our many houses.

Apparently Charles has stopped paying for Andrew’s security and has stopped his allowance.

If you're going to quote Jeremy Corbyn then do so correctly. 🙄

MrsFinkelstein · 01/11/2024 20:55

@wordler I think Republic are a bit peeved - the tour of Australia and Samoa were a massive success and William has been getting entirely too much positive press.

The RF are proving stubbornly popular with the public.

BustingBaoBun · 01/11/2024 21:30

Really?

I'm just puzzled that there was no thread about the King and Queen's tour of Australia and Samoa on MN royal family board. No one seemed that interested which is strange
