I think they are the underdogs engaged in a probably unwise David and Goliath battle against the pretty formidable soft power of the Monarch and some factions of the establishment.
And they are certainly engaged in a David and Goliath struggle with the press.
Just to be clear, despite being accused of adolescent “fandom” 😀 I don’t really care about any of them personally on either side.
But I think it serves certain interests that they remain at the focus of people’s attention as they generate revenue and distract from what is really going on.
I think the whole lot are rather spoilt and are all victims of circumstances to one degree or another. On both sides, imho, they are ordinary flawed people with the same problems as most us with more ready cash, far more daily help, better quality clothes, houses and cars, longer holidays, more opulent surroundings and far less privacy,
But it’s an interesting power struggle on the one hand and an interesting topic in relation to press freedom and standards on the other.
The other reason I have some sympathy for them is I really don’t like pile ons. And as explained previously, I think it’s downright bizarre and unfair when they are accused of greed when somehow the RF are not!
For example, people were suckered in by the stories of the late Queen eating muesli out of plastic Tupperware and Prince Philip turning out lights at BP while all of the murky stuff alluded to in this Guardian article in 2018 is hushed up! Remember the Paradise Papers anyone? Before the papers were leaked it was not transparent that the then PoW had offshore investments in certain areas and that an old friend of his was running a company that allegedly managed some of them!

Honestly, I wish people would switch their focus from H & M and look at what is really going on!
